  • A theoretical study was performed to investigate the behavioral chracteristics and shear strength of fiber reinforced concrete slender beams. In the fiber reinforced concrete beam, the shear force applied to a cross section of the beam was resisted by both compressive zone and tensile zone. The shear capacity of the compressive zone was defined addressing the interaction with the normal stresses developed by the flexural moment in the cross section. The shear capacity of the tensile zone was defined addressing the post-cracking tensile strength of fiber reinforced concrete. Since the magnitude and distribution of the normal stresses vary according to the flexural deformation of the beam, the shear capacity of the beam was defined as a function of the flexural deformation of the beam. The shear strength of the beam and the location of the critical section were determined at the intersection between the shear capacity and shear demand curves. The proposed method was developed as a unified shear design method which is applicable to conventional reinforced concrete as well as fiber reinforced concrete.

  • This study was conducted to develop the efficient system for starch hydrolysis suppression using rutin, quercetin and dietary fiber through the statistical mixture design. The three components were replaced with wheat flour at the level of 10% and the mixed gel with three components was characterized by in vitro starch digestion. The mixture design was applied by simplex-centroid experimental model. The quadratic model (R2=0.86) was well fitted and the obtained regression equation indicated that the significant positive effects was observed in the quercetin and fiber mixture. Based on the statistical results, the best mixing ratio of quercetin and fiber was 72: 28 that led to the lowest predicted glycemic index (pGI). Their interactions on the pGI of starch digestibility were clearly visualized in the 3D surface plot. These results suggested that the mixture of quercetin and fiber interact strongly with wheat flour, consequently retarding starch hydrolysis by 15%.

  • From the three element non-Newtonian model of one non-Newtonian viscoelastic Maxwell elements and a elastic spring, the stress relaxation equation was derived. The various model parameters of this equation were evaluated by appling the experimental results of stress relaxation to the stress relaxation equation. The theoretical curves calculated from this model parameters agreed with the experimental stress relaxation curves. From the parameters of nonlinear viscoelastic model, the hole volume, fine structure, viscoelastic properties and mechanical properties of polymer fibers were studied. The experiments of stress relaxation were carried out using the tensile tester with the solvent chamber. The stress relaxation curves of the two types polyacrylonitrile-polyvinylchloride copolymer and another two types PVC monofilament fibers were obtained in air and water of various temperatures.

  • In this study, finite element analysis of Carbon-Steel Laminates with different layup pattern was conducted to verify similarity to the results of previous studies and to develop the effective model for low-velocity impact analysis. As in the experiment, Finite element analysis of the Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) with five different lamination patterns was carried out, and the impact resistance of the FMLs was confirmed by comparing the energy absorption ratio. The FMLs showed the higher energy absorption ratio than the mild steel having the same thickness, and it was confirmed that all the FMLs had the high energy absorption ratio over than 96%. In addition, the low-velocity impact analysis model proposed in this study can be effectively used to study composite forms and automotive structures.

  • Interfacial shear strength between epoxy and carbon fiber has been analyzed utilizing the microbond specimen with an epoxy micro-droplet adhered onto single carbon fiber. The interfacial shear stress distributions along the fiber/matrix interface were calculated by finite element analysis using three kinds of finite element models such as droplet model, circular-crosssection model and pull-out model. Conclusions were obtained as follows. (1) Interfacial shear stress distribution showed that larger stresses were concentrated in the fiber/matrix interface for microbond test than for pull-out test. Thus, debonding at the fiber/matrix interface during microbond test was liable to occur at low load level. (2) Microbond test showed higher interfacial strength which was caused by various effects of micro-droplet geometry and size as well as stress concentration in the region contacting with the micro-vise tip.

  • In this work, an Ar+ beam was irradiated on carbon fiber surfaces to improve the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the resulting composites using an ion assisted reaction (IAR) method h single fiber pull-out test was executed to investigate the basic characteristics of the single Carbon fiber/matrix interface. Based on Greszczuk's geometrical model, the debonding force for pull-out of the fiber from the resins was discussed with the applied ion beam energy as a result, it was known that an ion beam treatment produced the functional groups on fiber surface and etching lines along the fiber axis direction, resulting in increasing the adhesion forces between fibers and matrix, which caused the improvement of the IFSS in a composite system. And, it was also found that the maximum IFSS was shown at 0.8 keV ion beam energy in this system.

  • The effect of steel-fiber contents on the compressive behavior of ultra high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC) was studied to propose a compressive behavior model for UHPCC. The experiments considered fiber contents of 0~5 vol.% and the results indicated that compressive strength and corresponding strain as well as elastic modulus were improved as the fiber contents increased. Compared to the previous study results obtained from concrete with compressive strength of 100MPa or less, the reinforcement effect on strength showed similar tendency, while the effect on the strain and elastic modulus were much less. Strength, strain, and elastic modulus according to the fiber contents were presented as a linear function of fiber reinforcement index (RI). Fiber reinforcement in UHPCC had no influence on the shape of compressive behavioral curve. Considering its effect on compressive strength, strain, and elastic modulus, a compressive stress-strain relation for UHPCC was proposed.

  • In this study, a constitutive model called the disturbed state concept (DSC) was modified to be applied to the interface shear stress-displacement relationship between geosynthetics. The DSC model is comprised of two reference states, namely the relative intact (RI) and the fully adjusted (FA) state, and one function, namely the disturbance function. This model is a unified approach and can allow for various models as an RI state such as elastic-perfectly plastic model, hierarchical model, and so on. In addition, by using this model, the elastic and plastic displacements can be considered simultaneously. Comparisons between the measured data and predicted results through the parameters determined from four sets of large direct shear tests showed good agreements with each other, especially for the smooth geomembrane-involved interface. Although there are slight differences at peak shear strength for textured geomembrane-involved interface, this model can still be useful to predict the position of displacement at peak strength and the large displacement (or residual) shear strength.

  • Two types of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures having irregularity in the lower two stories were selected as prototypes, and nonlinear time history analysis was performed using OpenSees to verify the analysis technique and to investigate the seismic capacity of those buildings. One of the buildings studied had a symmetrical moment-resisting frame (BF), while the other had an infilled shear wall in only one of the exterior frames (ESW). A fiber model, consisting of concrete and reinforcing bar represented from the stress-strain relationship, was adapted and used to simulate the nonlinearity of members, and MVLEM (Multi Vertical Linear Element Model) was used to simulate the behavior of the wall. The analytical results simulate the behavior of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures well, including the stiffness and yield force of piloti stories, the rocking behavior of the upper structure and the variation of the axial stiffness of the column due to variation in loading condition. However, MVLEM has a limitation in simulating the abrupt increasing lateral stiffness of a wall, due to the torsional mode behavior of the building. The design force obtained from a nonlinear time history analysis was shown to be about $20{\sim}30%$ smaller than that obtained in the experiment. For this reason, further research is required to match the analytical results with real structures, in order to use nonlinear time history analysis in designing a piloti-type high-rise RC building.
