This paper describes a probabilistic structural design method of composite propulsion system by comparing safety factor based on average value and allowable value with structural reliability. Generally, the required structural safety factor and reliability of composite pressure vessel are 1.5 and 0.999, respectively. In the case of structural design using average strength, the safety factor which satisfies the required structural reliability depends on the variation of fiber strength. However, the structural design using allowable value shows constant safety factor for the variation of fiber strength, because the allowable value of fiber strength is calculated by considering the variation of fiber strength. Through the analysis results, it was known that the fiber strength is the most important design random variable for the structural design of composite pressure vessel and the variation of fiber strength must be minimized to develop the high performance composite propulsion system.
In this study, structural design and analysis of the automobile bonnet is performed. The flax/vinly ester composite material is applied for structural design. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite bonnet. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the fly layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. A series of flax/vinyl ester composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of the automobile bonnet is performed.
In this work, a manufacturing and structural test of 1kW class horizontal axis wind turbine blade using natural-fiber composite was performed. The aerodynamic design of blade was performed after investigation on design requirement. The structural design load was investigated after aerodynamic design of blade. And also, structural design of blade was carried out. The structural design of blade was carried out using the simplified methods such as the netting rule and the rule of mixture applied to composite. The structural safety of the designed blade structure is investigated through the various load cases, stress, deformation and buckling analyses using the FEM method. Finally, the blade manufacturing and structural test using natural composite was carried out.

The fiber bridging model is the crucial factor to predict or analyze the tensile behavior of fiber reinforced cementitious composites. This paper presents the fiber bridging constitutive law considering the distribution of fiber inclined angle and the number of fibers in engineered cementitious composites. The distribution of fiber inclined angle and the number of fibers are measured and analyzed by the image processing technique. The fiber distribution are considerably different from those obtained by assuming two- or three-dimensional random distributions for the fiber inclined angle. The simulation of the uniaxial tension behavior was performed considering the distribution of fiber inclined angle and number of fibers measured by the sectional image analysis. The simulation results exhibit multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior that correspond well with test results.
It is well known that the interaction and adhesion between the glass fiber (GF) and polymer matrix has a significant effect in determining the properties of fiber-reinforced materials. Therefore, it is one of important considerations to modify the surface of glass fiber with an appropriate sizing. We investigated the treatment method of glass fiber with coupling agent to improve the interaction of the interfacial region. The correlation between interfacial property and interphase microstructure was also examined in an attempt to realize a proper morphology at the glass fiber surfaces.
