This paper presents the tensile characteristics for carbon/epoxy, carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites under elevated temperature, which are considered for vehicle structure or thermal protection materials. The tensile test was conducted with servo-hydraulic testing machine and high temperature furnace, and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio were evaluated by using high temperature strain gages. Also, they were compared each other with respect to fiber orientation and temperature effect. These test results were used for designing and analyzing some airframe structures with these composites.

Deflection in terms of serviceability of reinforced concrete structures is considered as one of significant factor. Domestic concrete specification offers a procedure to evaluate deflection using effective moment of inertia at cracked section, which has been known as Branson's equation in ACI. Branson's equation was derived from statistical analysis of maximum deflection of flexural members, but is somewhat weak in no reflection of bond characteristics between reinforced bars and concrete, such as tension stiffening effect. Therefore, present code creates difference from actual deflection. In this study, experiments about deflection of RC beams was completed to compare domestic standard and Eurocode 2, which calculates deflection considering tension stiffening effect. Four RC beams were built and tested, and initial modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of concrete used in the test was calculated by each design standard.

In tension lap splices of straight deformed bars, KCI Code (KCI2012) and ACI Code (ACI318-11) requires that the lap lengths for class B splice are 1.3 times as development length. KCI2012 contains development length provisions for the use of headed deformed bars in tension and does not allow their tension lap splices. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate that KCI2012 equation for the development length, $l_{dt}$, of headed bars can be used to calculate the lap length, $l_s$, of headed deformed bars in grade SD400 and SD500, having specified yield strength of 400 and 500 MPa. Test results showed that specimens with $l_s$ equal to $1.3l_{dt}$ had maximum flexural strengths as 1.16~1.31 times as the nominal flexural strengths, flexural failure mode, and ductility. These observations indicate that $1.3l_{dt}$ is suitable to the tensile lap length of headed deformed bars in grade SD400 and SD500.
This paper presents the tensile behavior of stud connections installed between reinforced concrete and steel members. Eight specimens are tested to verify the factors influencing the tensile behavior of the connection. Major variables considered in the test are the reinforcement ratios of concrete member and connection details. Test results indicate that the reinforcing bars near stud bolts contribute to the increase of the tensile strength of the member as well as to the reduction of brittle failure. It is shown that C-type or U-type connection has relatively high ductility. From the evaluation on the tensile strength of test results including those of peformed by previous researchers, it was shown CCD (Concrete Capacity Design) method overestimated the strength. In this paper, the reduction factor of 0.75 ø instead of ø is suggested for design purpose of the stud connection.
A compression lap splice becomes an important issue due to development of ultra-high strength concrete. Current design codes regarding compression lap splice do not utilize merits of the improved strength of ultra-high strength concrete. Especially, a compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice according to the codes because they do not consider effects of compressive strength of concrete and transverse reinforcement. This anomaly confuses engineers in practice. Design equation is proposed for compression lap splice in 40 to 70 MPa of compressive strength of concrete. The proposed equation is based on 51 specimens conducted by authors. Basic form of the equation includes main parameters which are derived from investigating test results. Through two-variable non-linear regression analysis of measured splice strengths, a strength equation of compression lap splices is then derived. A specified splice strength is defined using a 5% fractile coefficient and a lap length equation is constructed. By the proposed equation, the anomaly of lap lengths in tension and compression is got rid of. In addition, the equation has a reliability equivalent to those of the specified strengths of materials.

The concrete deck slab at the continuous span support of the steel box girder bridge is a structure that is combined with the upper flange. It is a structure that can cause tension cracks in the deck slab at the support causing problems such as durability degradation in long span bridges. This is because the tensile stress in the longitudinal direction of the slab exceeds the design tensile strength due to the effects of dead load and live load when applying a long span. Accordingly, it is necessary to control tensile cracking by adding a reinforcing bar in the axial direction to the slab at the support and to introduce additional compressive stress. To solve this problem, a structural system of a steel box girder bridge was proposed that introduces compressive stress as PS steel wire tension in the tensile stress section of the upper slab in the continuous support. The resulting structural performance was compared and verified through the finite element analysis and the steel wire tension test of the actual specimen. By introducing compressive stress that can control the tensile stress and cracking of the slab generated in the negative moment through the tension of the PS steel wire, it is possible to improve structural safety and strengthen durability compared to the existing steel box girder bridge.
A compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete according to current design codes. New criteria for the compression lap splice including the effects of concrete strength are required for practical purpose of ultra-high strength concrete. Characteristics of compression lap splice have been extensively investigated and main parameters are derived. In addition, an experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa. The strength of the compression lap splice consists of bond and end bearing and two contributors are combined. Therefore, combined action of bond and end bearing should be assessed. Compared with tension splices, concrete strength significantly affects the strength of compression splices due to short splice length and existence of end bearing. Test results show that the splice strength can be evaluated to be proportional to square root of compressive strength of concrete. The stress states of concrete surrounding spliced bars govern the strengths of bond and end bearing. Because the axial stress of the concrete is relatively high, the splice strength is not dependent on clear spacing. End bearing strength is not affected by splice length and clear spacing and is expressed with a function of the square root of concrete strength. The failure mode of specimens is similar to side-face blowout of pullout test of anchors and the strength of end bearing can be evaluated using the equation of side-face blowout strength. Because the stresses developed by bond in compression splices are nearly identical to those in tension splices, strength increment of compression splices is attributed to end bearing only.
Recently, many landfills are constructed by using geosynthetics with earth materials. Geotextiles in geosynthetics are applied for the various purposes such as filters of the leachate collection and removal system and protectors of geomembrane liner. However geotextiles can be exposed to direct sunlight during the construction of landfill for several months. As you know the exposure of polymers to sunlight can be a major source of degradation of them. This study is to suggest a criteria on the installation of heavy weight geotextiles at the landfill. For this purpose, several different geotextiles were evaluated by outdoor exposure at two different locations and under the different seasons for one and half years. As the results of outdoor exposure, polypropylene geotextiles with 500g/$m^2$ and 700g/$\textrm{m}^2$were maintained around 40% of the initial strength during for one and half years. However, the polypropylene geotextile of 1000g/$\textrm{m}^2$showed 65% of the retained strength for the same duration of exposure. The retained strength of all polypropylene geotextile reduced dramatically with the cumulative sunshine radiation on a horizontal surface of around 1500MJ/$\textrm{m}^2$.

In strength limit states design, it is assumed that after cracking, reinforcement carries all tension in the tension zone of reinforced concrete members. However, it can be seen the concrete between cracks will contribute to carrying a part of the tension stress in actual concrete members particularly at service load levels, this effect is referred as tension stiffening effect. In this study, tension stiffening models and high strength concrete beam flexural test results were verified through comparison. The relationship between moment-curvature and load-deflection was evaluated by result of tension stiffening model and test result values. The analysis results showed that ACI 318 and Owen & Damjanic generally shows good agreement.

In reinforced concrete structures, the joints of ordinary rebars are usually lap joints, which are bound by binding wires with rebars, and mechanical joints by couplers. In domestic design standards (concrete design code), welded lap joints are restricted for ordinary rebars, but overseas standards allow welded lap joints of ordinary rebars through pre-heating. This study investigated the domestic and international standards/criteria and evaluated the fracture strength by performing the tensile test on the lap welded joint of SD400 grade rebars, which is used the most in the construction sites. The weld length of the specimen for weld lap joints is based on the minimum weld length (8d) given in the KS standard (KS B ISO 17660-1). According to AWS D1.4, the preheating temperature was set to $150^{\circ}C$ for D19 and below, and $260^{\circ}C$ for D22 and above. In the test results, the tensile strength of rebars with welded lap joints exceeded the required strength (125% of the yield strength) according to the concrete design code. To analyze the effect of preheating, the tensile strength of the welded rebars after preheating was not significantly different from that of the welded rebars without preheating. The carbon equivalent content (Ceq) of the rebars used in the test was 0.45% or less. Under AWS D1.4, no preheating is required if the carbon equivalent is less than 0.45%. All specimens with a welded lap length of 8d failed by a bar fracture. The effect of preheating was confirmed to be insignificant due to the low carbon equivalent of the rebar.
