  • The present study evaluates the validity of different equations specified in code provisions and proposed by the existing researchers to predict the concrete tensile capacities (direct tensile strength, splitting tensile strength and modulus of rupture) using a comprehensible database including 361 lightweight concrete (LWC), 1,335 normal-weight concrete (NWC) and 221 heavy-weight concrete (HWC) specimens. Most of the equations express the concrete tensile strengths as a function of its compressive strength based on the limited NWC concrete test data. However, the present database shows that the concrete tensile capacities are significantly affected by its unit weight as well. As a result, the inconsistency between experiments and predictions by the different models increases when the concrete unit weight is below 2,100 kg/$m^3$ and concrete compressive strength is above 50 MPa. On the other hand, new models proposed by the present study considering the concrete unit weight predict the tensile strengths of concrete with more accuracy.

  • A tension member that has a high-strength bolt fastened to a standard bolt hole increases structural resistance but causes problems from workability or economic perspectives. In this research, a total of 28 samples that have standard and over bolt holes as the tension member's high-strength bolted connection were made and a tension test was conducted. The change of strength of the connection has been confirmed by comparing the tension load of standard and over bolt hole samples obtained from the test results with the design strength due to net section and end distance. Samples made with over bolt holes had a lighter tension load than that of samples made with standard bolt holes, exceeded the design strength of present design standards, and although decrease in strength was inevitable due to the over bolt hole, their safety was satisfactory.

  • Although concrete members are not normally designed to resist direct tension, the knowledge of tensile strength is of value in estimating the cracking load. In general, there are three types of test method for tensile strength ; direct tension test, flexural tension test, and splitting tension test. Though direct tensile strength represents the real tensile strength of concrete, direct tension tests are seldom carried out, mainly because it is very difficult to applicate a pure tension force. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the test methods, effect of aspect ratio, and the size effect on the direct tensile strength. Direct tension test, using bonded end plates, follows RILEM and U.S.Bureau of Reclamation. And other test methods follow ASTM provisions. Four kinds of aspect ratio and two kinds of size effect are tested. Same variables are tested by direct tension test and splitting tension test for comparison between the two test methods. Test results show that direct tensile strength of concrete is more affected by aspect ratio and size than other kinds of strength.

  • Splice of reinforcement is inevitable in reinforced concrete structures and, generally, lap splices are used. Lap length for tension splice is determined from development length in tension. The development length is calculated from an experimental model which was based on data of tests on anchorage and splice. Longitudinal reinforcements in flexural members are deformed and, therefore, prying action happens in spliced reinforcements unlike anchored reinforcements. The prying action induces tensile stress in cover concrete and this tensile stress plays the same role to a circumferential tensile stress caused by bond. Because splitting failure is assumed to occur when the summation of tensile stresses caused by the prying action and the bond is equal to the tensile strength of the concrete, the prying action reduces the bond strength of spliced reinforcements. A theoretical model for the prying action is developed and effects of the prying action on the bond strength are assessed. The tensile stress by the prying action is proportional to tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of reinforcements. In addition, the tensile stress is inversely proportional to spacing of reinforcements. Consequently, longer splice length is required for spliced reinforcements with small spacing in flexible members.

  • Double-angle connections should be designed with enough stiffness and strength to properly resist various applied loads. Therefore, structural engineers should be able to predict some influential variables and take their effects into account in design. This study was performed to establish the effects of the number of bolts and bolt gage distance on the stiffness and strength of a double-angle connection under tension. Six experimental tests were conducted to describe the effects of these variables by comparing load-displacement relationship curves. In addition, two prediction models were proposed to estimate the initial stiffness and the maximum allowable tensile load based on the results of experimental tests. In the development of these prediction models, the effect of prying action was considered.

  • Flexural strength of concrete ground slab reinforced with steel fiber is evaluated using the equivalent flexural strength ratio of steel fiber reinforced concrete based on the yield line theory. Recently, the European standard specifies that the tensile performance of the steel fiber reinforced concrete be evaluated directly from the residual flexural strength after the cracking of concrete. Thus, in the study, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the conventional equivalent flexural strength ratio and the residual flexural strength of the steel fiber reinforced concrete. Then the design flexural strength was investigated according to the location of a point load, based on the ratio of the radius of contact area of the load to the radius of relative stiffness. Design flexural capacity obtained from ACI 360R-10 was smaller than that from TR 34 (2003 & 2013). In addition, TR 34 (2013), which evaluates the design flexural capacity based on the residual flexural strength, showed slightly smaller value than TR 34 (2003).

  • Although the compression splice needs not be longer than the tension slice due to existence of end bearing, current design codes impose a longer compression lap splice than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete. Hence, new criteria for the compression lap splice including the effects of concrete strength need to be sought for economical design involving ultra-high strength concrete. An experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 80 and 100 MPa. Test results show that the splice strength can be evaluated to be proportional to square root of compressive strength of concrete. Bar stress developed by end bearing is not affected by splice length and is expressed with a function of the square root of concrete strength. Mean value of stresses developed by end bearing is 16.5 square root of $f_{ck}$. The stresses developed by bond in compression splices are nearly identical to those in tension splices and, therefore, strength increment of compression splices is attributed to end bearing only. From regression analysis of 58 tests, a design equation is proposed for compression lap splice in 40 to 100 MPa of compressive strength of concrete. By the proposed equation, the anomaly of lap lengths in tension and compression is got rid of. In addition, the equation has a reliability equivalent to those of the specified strengths of materials.

  • In designing a high strength bolted beam splice using steel for building structures, it is necessary to present the appropriate steel grade selection criteria for how to determine the cover plate steel grade. This study examined the difference in tensile behavior according to the steel grades through static tensile tests simulating the beam member high strength bolt joints flange. For this purpose, the specimens were designed and fabricated with the main variables, such as the thickness, steel grade and the strength of flange and cover plate, which are expected to affect the splice strength and behavior. The tensile test results for a total of 48 specimens showed that the tensile-load capacity exceeded the design tensile strength applied with a nominal strength of steel in all specimens. When the design strength of the cover plate exceeded 1.25 times that of the flange plate, the flange plate governed the behavior of splice. The change in maximum tensile load due to the change in flange steel grade is not very large, but there is a difference in deformation. The test results confirmed that the steel grade and thickness of the cover plate were the main factors affecting the beam splice behavior.
