  • This study was conducted to identify plant-parasitic nematodes and determine the distribution pattern of the nematode species in citrus fruit orchards in Korea from April to August, 2008. Plant-parasitic nematodes were found in 139 among 178 soil samples. Tylenchulus semipenetrans was collected from 85 out of 94 Citrus unshiu orchards examined (90.4%). C. junos orchards infested with T. semipenetrans were 60 out of 84 (71.4%). However, proportion of dominant species between the two was different. At domestic Citrus orchards, it proved that T. semipenetrans was the most important plant-parasitic nematode from this study. The overall frequency of the plant-parasitic nematodes was positively correlated with the cultivation years. More alkaline soils tended to harbor more T. semipenetrans. However the correlation coefficient between the two was very low.

  • Fatty Acid contents of entomopathogenic nematodes(EPNs) were examined by various types of nematodes and culture methods. Seven different types EPNs cultured by in vivo did not contain same fatty acid contents, but similar compositions. It was also found that Steinernema carpocapsae among EPNs cultured by in vivo and in vitro contained not only different fatty acid contents, but also revealed distinctive motilities in a soil. The addition of olive oil in the in vitro culture medium resulted in similar fatty acid contents of S. carpocapsae to in vivo and greatly improved the pathogenicity of nematodes compared to that of soy oil in the medium.

  • The nematodes associated with rice in Korea were investigated at 1,160 rice paddies in 387 localities during the last 3 years since 1985. As the result, 35 nematode species were found associated with rice in Korea. Among them 26 species were newly reported from rice in Korea; and 15 species, Criconemoides informis, Criconemella paragoodeyi, Criconema (Criconema) jaejuense, Ditylenchus longicauda, Eutylenchus africanus, Merlinius n. sp., Meiodorus n. sp., Ogma(Homogma) serrata, Ogma(Homogma) insulicum, Orientylus orientalis, Paratylenchus lepidus, Pararotylenchus pini, Triversus n. sp., Tylenchorhynchus clavicaudatus, Tylenchorhynchus nudus were firstly added for the world as associated with rice. Criconemella paragoodeyi, Merlinius n. sp., and Ditylenchus longicauda were distributed all over the country with high population density, and expected as potentially important rice parasitic nematodes. Hirschmanniella imamuri was distributed all over the country with high population density. Hirschmanniella oryzae was also distributed along with Hirschmanniella imamuri in the southern part of the country, but gradully disapeared as it goes to the northern part.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the infestation and distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes on kiwi orchards in Korea. Plant parasitic nematodes genus and densities were investigated at a total of 102 sites in Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju-do, which are the main production areas of domestic kiwi orchards. Plant parasitic nematodes detected were of 9 genera, including root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), spiral nematodes (Helicotylenchus spp.), and needle nematodes (Paratylenchus spp.), and 56% of the 102 plantations were infected with root-knot nematodes. Root-knot nematodes were found to be the most important plant parasitic nematode in domestic kiwi orchards. The average density of root-knot nematodes is 97 per 300 cm3 soil, and there is concern about the kiwi yield reduction. As a result of identifying the root-knot nematode species: M. arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita, and M. javanica. Among them, M. arenaria is the most dominant. As the plant parasitic nematode infection route in fruit trees is often spread through the transplantation of infected seedlings, attention should be paid to the production of nematode-free plants during the production and supply of kiwifruit plants.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effect of intercropping system on the population of soil nematodes. The kinds of nematodes inhabitated in peony field were Meloidogyne sp., APhelenchoides sp., Ditylenchus sp., and Xiphinema sp., Meloidogyne sp., was dominant in the experiment field. The population of Meloidogyne sp., was fewer in the peony field intercropped with sesame and job's tear than intercropped with red pepper and Rehmannia glutinosa L. The occurence of powdery mildew was decreased in the peony field intercropped with red pepper and Job's tear.

  • In 6 locations of Kyong-gi province, 120 soybean fields were examined to study the distribution of plant nematode genera. Heterodera glycines was found in $71.7\%$ of soybean fields examined. Among nematode genera infesting over $50\%$ of soybean fields were Aphclcllchus $70.8\%$, Aphelenchoides $68.3\%$, Tylenchus $66.7\%$ and Ditylenchus $52,5\%$. The populations of genera Aphelenchoides, Aphelenchus, Ditylenchus and Tylenchorhynchus were over 1000 nematodes/500g of soil sample in some soybean fields. Of the genera found from the survey, Heterodera, Trichodorus. Xiphinema and Pratylenchus seem to be most important to soybean. Fourteen genera were identified from Yeoncheon, and 13 from Yangju, 10 each from Paju, Kimpo and Namyangju and 9 from Goyang.

  • To study races of Heterodera glycines in Korea, 21 soil samples were collected from eight provinces in 1995. Four races were found; race 3(48%) was a dominant race flowed by race 5(24%), race 1(19%), and race 6(9%). About 30~40% of H. glycines populations reproduced on Pickett and PI88788, while non reproduced on Peking or PI90763. Development of resistant soybean cultivar targeting to race 5 and 6 of H. glycines using PI90763 and PI88788 as a parent is recommended.
