  • This study gives the vertical motion analysis in multi-directional irregular waves using a commercial code(MAXSURF v.16) based on linear strip theory for a training ship. To verify the commercial code prior to the analysis, we guarantees the reliability of this paper's results using the commercial code by comparing with the results(Flokstra, 1974) of same hull and experimental conditions on a Panamax container. The analysis conditions are Beaufort wind scale No. 5($\bar{T}=5.46$, $H_{1/3}=2m$) based on ITTC wave spectrum, encounter angle Head & bow seas($150^{\circ}$) and Froude number Fn=0.257. Finally, we calculates heave RAO, pitch RAO and obtains the result of ship's response spectra for heave and pitch motions. In the motion response spectrum under the multi-directional irregular waves, heave motion reacts slightly high in short-crested waves and pitch motion reacts high in long-crested waves.

  • The capsizing and consequent sinking of a coastal car ferry was recently reported, with numerous human casualties. The primary cause was determined to be a sudden turn with improperly stowed and secured cargo. Part I of this study introduces how long term acceleration components are determined from seakeeping analyses. A carferry with a displacement of 1,633 tonf was selected as the target vessel. Sea data that included the significant wave heights and periods were collected at four observation buoys, some of which were far away from two main voyage routes: Incheon-Jeju and Pusan-Jeju. Frequency response analyses were performed to obtain the linearized radiation force coefficients, hydrostatic stiffnesses, and wave excitation forces. Time response analyses were sequentially performed to produce the motion-induced acceleration processes. The probabilistic distributions of the acceleration components were determined using a peak and valley counting method. Long term extreme acceleration components were proposed as a final result.

  • The effects of inner liquid sloshing on vessel motions are a well-known factor. It was investigated experimentally and numerically. In this regard, the study of many efforts to reduce natural phenomena of vessel motions by adopting special devices especially for roll motions. Among many devices, inserting baffles in the inner liquid tank is very common. In this study, one investigated the vessel motions with inner sloshing tanks with baffles inside. For the numerical simulation, one employed a dynamically coupled program between boundary-element-method-based vessel motion analysis program and a particle-based computational fluid dynamics program. Comparing corresponding experimental results validated the dynamically coupled program. The validated coupled program was used to simulate vessel motions, including sloshing effects with various lengths of inner baffles. The simulation results show that not only the filling ratio of inner liquid, but also the length of clearance due to baffles influenced the vessel motions. The significant point of this study was that the natural frequency of vessel motions can be maintained irrespective of the amount of filling ratio through adjustment of the clearance. In a future study, the effects of various numbers of baffles with various clearances would be conducted to percuss the possibility of vessel motion control with inner liquid sloshing effects.

  • This paper deals tilth an efficient algorithm in spectral fatigue analysis of ship structures. The concept of stress influence coefficients is suggested in order to obtain stress transfer functions efficiently which are the structural responses for unit load components. Strip method is applied to obtain the motion response and pressure distributions exerted on the hull. Since a number of the structural analysis should be performed for the various wave frequencies and heading angles in the spectral analysis, the algorithm developed in this study improves the efficiency of the analysis. Finally, the calculation example with application to this concept is shown in this paper.

  • In this paper, the authors investigate theoretically the motion and longitudinal strength of ships among waves talking account of the effects of nonlinearities such as the hull shape, bottom emergence, and hydrodynamic impact. Incidentally the ship is treated as an elastic beam in heading wave condition regarding characteristics of slamming and whipping-according to the variation in the range of a quarter length of the ship forward and the increase of the elastic modes up to 4-th vibration mode were investigated by the present theory. Calculations are performed for 97m container ship and its validity is confirmed by a series of model tests. Conclusions obtained are as follows; 1) Acceleration and pressure estimated by the present theory are in good accordance with experiments. 2) The present non-linear theory may be applied for estimating longitudinal bending moment of ships in slamming and whipping conditions. 3) In investigation of the characteristic in response according to shape variation for parts under draft and vow-flare in the range of a quarter length of the ship forward, dynamic responses due to the former were much more conspicuous than those due to the later. 4) In the maximum bending moment, the considering case up to 2-the mode are larger, about $10{\sim}15%$, than that up to 4-th mode.

  • In this paper we investigate the motion response of a moored ship in the fluid region sheltered by inclined breakwaters. The matched asymptotic expansion technique is employed to analyze the wave fields scattered by the inclined breakwaters. Fluid domain is subdivided into the ocean, entrance and sheltered regions. Unknown coefficients contained in each region can be determined by matching at the intermediate zone between two neighboring regions. The wave field generated by the ship motion can be analyzed in terms of Green's function method. To obtain the velocity jump across the ship associated with the symmetric motion modes, the sheltered region is further divided into near field of the ship and the rest field. The image method is introduced to consider the effect of the pier near the ship. The integral equation for the velocity jump is derived by the flux matching between the inner region and the outer region of a moored ship. Throughout the numerical calculation it is found that the inclined angle width of entrance of breakwaters as well as the location of moored vessel play an important role in the motion response of a moored ship.

  • The rule 15, 16 and 17 of International Regulations for Preventing collisions at Sea direct actions to avoid collision when two power-driven vessels are crossing. But these rules do not present the safety minimum approaching distances outside which a give- way vessel deeps out of the way of a stand-on vessel. In this paper, the author analyzed the ship's collision avoiding actions from a viewpoint of ship kinematics as the method to calculate this distance. The author worked out mathematic formulas for calculating the safety minimum approaching distances outside which the give-way vessel takes the actions to avoid collisions in accordance with the cross angles of the crossing vessels' courses. Figuring out actually the values of maneuvering indices of the M. S. Koan Ack San (GT: 224tons), the training ship of the National Fisheries University of Busan and the M. S. Golden Clover (GT: 101, 235tons) of the Eastern Shipping Co., Ltd. through their Z test, the author applied these values to the calculating formulas and calculated the safety minimum approaching distances. The results of calculations are as follows; 1. The greatest distance is to be kept by the give-way vessel to avoid collision when the cross angle of courses is 90$^{\circ}$ or near it. In such case the safety minimum approaching distance of a small vessel must be more than 5 times of her own length and that of a large vessel more than 11 times of her own length. 2. Collision danger is greater when crossing angle is obtuse than in an acute angle, therefore greater distance is to be kept by the give-way vessel to avoid collision in the case of the obtuse angle. 3. The actions to be taken to avoid collisions by the give-way vessel in Rule 16 and by the stand-on vessel in Rule 17(a)(ii) of International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, must be done outside the above safety minimum approaching distance. When inevitably such actions are to be taken within the safety minimum approaching distance, they should be accompanied with engine motions.

  • In this study, two rectangular barges in close proximity were simulated to analyze the characteristics of motion responses due to hydrodynamic interactions. Using a numerical solution from DNV-GL SESAM, coupled stiffness matrix terms for these same FEM models were added to the multiple body modes in the surge direction. Potential theory was used to calculate the first order radiation and diffraction effects on the simulated barge models. In the results, the sheltering effect of the barges was not shown at 1.3 rad/s with hull separation of 20 m in transverse waves. The separation effect between the barges was more clear with longitudinal waves and a shallow water depth. However, sway forces were influenced by hull separation with transverse waves. The peaks for sway and heave motion and sway force occurred at higher frequencies as hull separation narrowed with longitudinal and transverse waves. Given a depth of 10 m, the sway motion on the lee side of a coupled barge made a significant difference in the range of 0.2-0.8 rad/s with transverse and oblique waves. Also, the peaks for sway force were situated at lower frequencies, even when incident waves changed.

  • In ship and offshore structures, there exist many local structural systems which may be regarded as a combined structural systems composed of thick plates or double wall panels and attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. For vibration analysis of such a combined system an analytical method based on the receptance method is presented in this paper. The free vibrational characteristics and forced vibration responses of the combined system can be calculated by synthesis of receptances of the panel and attachments. To calculate receptances of the panel, it may be regarded as a Mindlin plate for consideration of effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia and the assumed mode-Lagrange's equation method is applied using Timoshenko beam function or polynomials having properties of Timoshenko beam function as trial functions. Through some numerical calculations, accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are shown.
