The Effect of Valve Geometry Variation on Injection Characteristics of Injection Valve for Marine Diesel Engines (선박디젤기관용 분사밸브의 형상변화가 분사특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 계산적 고찰)

  • Injection technology is one of the important technologies in a diesel engine. Many studies have done on the injection system. In this study, the fuel chamber geometry, the orifice ratio and the needle lift of the injection valve for a marine diesel engine are varied, and simulated. The result shows that the nozzle hole size has influence on the rail pressure and injection duration sensitively. The decrease of the static pressure at the nozzle hole entrance and the increase of the dynamic pressure on the outlet surface are occurred with the increase of the nozzle hole diameter. The highest dynamic pressure of the outlet was occurred at the needle lift of 0.4mm and the nozzle hole diameter of 0.328mm in this test nozzle.

Experimental study of NOx reduction in marine diesel engines by using wet-type exhaust gas cleaning system (선박용 디젤엔진의 NOx를 저감하기 위한 습식 배기가스 처리기술 적용에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Diesel engines have the highest brake thermal efficiency among internal combustion engines. Therefore, they are utilized in medium and large transportation vehicles requiring large amounts of power such as heavy trucks, ships, power generation systems, etc. However, diesel engines have a disadvantage of generating large quantities of nitrogen oxides during the combustion process. Therefore, the authors tried to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides in marine diesel engines using a wet-type exhaust gas cleaning system utilizing the undivided electrolyzed seawater method. In this method, electrolyzed seawater in injected into the harmful gas discharge from the diesel engine using real seawater. The authors investigated the reduction of NO and NOx from the pH value, available chlorine concentration, and the temperature of electrolyzed seawater. The results of this experiment indicated that when the electrolyzed seawater is acidic, the NO oxidation rate in the oxidation tower is higher than that when the electrolyzed seawater has a neutral pH. Likewise, the NO oxidation rate increased with the increase in concentration of chlorine. Further, it was confirmed that the electrolyzed seawater temperature had no effect on the NO oxidation rate. Thus, the NOx exhaust emission value produced by the diesel engine was reduced by means of electrolyzed seawater treatment.

  • The reduction of CO2 emission has been discussed in the Marine Environment Protection committee in the International Maritime Organization as the biggest causes of GHG for the purpose of indexing CO2 amounts released into the atmosphere from ships. Accordingly, various methods including the change in the hull design to improve energy efficiency, the coating development to reduce friction resistances, the additives development for improving thermal efficiency in an engine, the low-speed operation to reduce fuel consumptions, and etc. have been applied. The main engine of a ship is an electronic engine for improving the efficiency of the whole load area. However, marine generator engines still use mechanical drive engines in intake, exhaust, and fuel injection valve drive cams. In addition, most of marine generator engines in ships apply a part-load operation of less then 80% due to an overload protection system. Therefore, marine auxiliary diesel engine set at 100% load is necessary to readjust in order to efficient operation because of part-load operation. The objective of this study is to report the results of the part-load fuel consumption improvement by injection timing readjust to identifying the operational characteristics of a marine generator engine currently operated in a ship.

A study on power improvement emission characteristics of marine diesel engine with response power 200HP turbocharger (대응출력 200마력 과급기에 의한 디젤기관의 출력향상 및 배출특성에 관한 연구)

  • To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. Transient Torsional Vibration Response due to Ice Impact Torque Excitation on Marine Diesel Engine Propulsion Shafting (선박용 디젤엔진 추진축에서 빙 충격 토크 기진에 의한 과도 비틀림 진동 응답)

  • In recent years, there has been an increasing demand to apply the new IACS(International Association of Classification Societies) standards for ice and polar-classed ships. For ice-class vessel propulsion system, the ice impact torque design criterion is defined as a periodic harmonic function in relation to the number of the propeller blades. However, irregular or transient ice impact torque is assumed to occur likely in actual circumstances rather than these periodic loadings. In this paper, the reliability and torsional vibration characteristics of a comparatively large six-cylinder marine diesel engine for propulsion shafting system was examined and reviewed in accordance with current regulations. In this particular, the transient ice impact torque and excessive vibratory torque originating from diesel engine were interpreted and the resonant points identified through theoretical analysis. Several floating ice impacts were carried out to evaluate torque responses using the calculation method of classification rule requirement. The Newmark method was used for the transient response analysis of the whole system.

  • Recently, modern long-stroke diesel engines with small number of cylinders have been installed for energy saving and simpler maintenance. These kinds of low speed diesel engine produce large torsional vibration in the shafting, which induces the excessive vibratory stresses in the shafting and large propeller thrust variation. This thrust variation excites vibrations of the shafting and superstructure in the longitudinal direction. Up to now the deteriministic analysis of coupled vibration of marine shafting system has been performed. In this paper probabilistic analysis method of the marine diesel propulsion shafting system under coupled axial and torsional vibrations is presented. For the purpose of this work, the torsional and axial vibration excitations of engine and propeller are assumed to be probabilistic while the lateral excitation is assumed to be deterministic. The probabilistic analysis is based on a response surface and Monte-Carlo simulation. Numerical results based on the proposed method are compared with results calculated using the conventional deterministic analysis method. The results obtained make it clear that the proposed method gives a substantial increase in information about shafting behaviour as compared with the deterministic method.

  • Recently worldwide concern and research is being actively conducted on green energy which can reduce environmental pollution. A plant such as the natural rapeseed oil, soybean oil, palm, etc. is used as a bio source in home and industry. Biofuels is a sustainable fuel having economically benefits and decreasing environmental pollution problems caused due to fossil fuel, and it can be applied to the conventional diesel engine without changing the existing institutional structure. Waste vegetable oil contains a high cetane number and viscosity component, the low carbon and oxygen content. A lot of research is progressing about the conversion of waste vegetable oil as renewable clean energy. In this study, waste oil was prepared to waste cooking oil generated from the living environment, and applied to diesel engine to confirm the possibility and cost-effectiveness of biodiesel blend waste oil. As a result, brake specific fuel consumption and NOx was increased, carbon monoxide and soot was decreased.

  • The conventional PID controller has been extensively used to speed control of marine diesel engines. However one of drawbacks is that its control performance can be degraded if the parameters are fixed on whole operating points. In this paper a scheme for integrating PID control and the fuzzy technique is presented to control speed of a marine diesel engine on whole operating points. At first the PID controller is designed at each speed mode whose parameters are optimally adjusted using a genetic algorithm, Then fuzzy "if-then" rules combine the controllers as a consequence part. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy controller a set of simulation works on a marine diesel engine are carried out.rried out.

  • 세계적으로 NOx 저감 및 규제치의 강화로 인해 디젤기관에서 발생되는 NOx 제거에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행 중이며, 암모니아 환원제와 배출가스의 NOx를 혼합하여 촉매 존재하에서 NOx를 제거하는 시스템이 개발되고 있다. 대부분 암모니아를 보관성이 용의한 요소(Urea) 수용액으로 대체하여 배기관 내에 직접 요소수를 분사하며 요소 수용액이 고온의 배기가스에 의해 증발되어 암모니아를 환원시키며, 촉매를 통하여 탈질을 하는 Urea-SCR 시스템을 채택하고 있다. 따라서 촉매전단에서 요소수가 완전히 증발되고, 또한 촉매 입구에서 요소수의 증발로 인해 환원된 암모니아의 분포도 균일해야 함으로 Urea-SCR 시스템이 배기가스 유동 및 온도에 최적화된 분무특성을 가지는 분사제어 시스템을 제시하고자 한다.

  • The combustion characteristics of the D.I. diesel engine are largely dependent on the air-fuel ratio and the gas exchange process. The main factors are the shape of combustion chamber, fuel injection system, air flow inside the cylinder, intake air mass flow rate and so forth. Because these factors affect the combustion in a mutual and combined manner, it is very important to clearly understand the correlation of these factors in order to provide the combustion improvement plans. In this paper, we studied the performance and the gas exchange process of marine four-stroke engine using the engine cycle simulation. Also, we predicted briefly turbocharger engine matching.
