$SrCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors were prepared by the solid phase reaction method, and their photostimulated luminescence(PSL) and photoluminescence(PL) characteristics were investigated. The PSL and PL peak of the $SrCl_2:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors are due to the $5d{\rightarrow}4f$ transition of $Eu^{2+}$ ions in phosphors. The PSL and PL spectrum obtained by the 355nm excitation was observed in $380{\sim}440\;nm$ region with the peak at 407 nm. The dose response of the PSL phosphors were linear within $2.5\;mGy{\sim}200\;mGy$ of 100 kV X-ray. The fading of the phosphors at room temperature was approximately 60% after 20 min.
Soil pollution by heavy metals has become a significant environmental concern due to a variety of human activities. Specially toxicity caused by excessive mercury exposure is now being recognized as a widespread environmental problem and is continuing to attract a great deal of public concerns. The earthworms are very important animals that aerate the soil with their burrowing action and enrich the soil by decomposing organic matters. Especially the earthworm Eisenia fetida is routinely used in ecotoxicological studies. The levels of DNA damage in earthworms treated with HgCl2 and ionizing radiation were investigated in this study. Genotoxic effects were evaluated in the earthworm's coelomocytes using the comet assay (Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis; SCGE). The results showed that the mercury chloride and radiation were responsible for the genotoxic effects on earthworms. The level of DNA damage significantly increased after the treatment of mercury chloride combined with ionizing radiation. The combined treatment of $HgCl_2$ and ionizing radiation had a greater genotoxicity. This study is amenable to further study such as enzyme activation assay.

To ensure the reliability of computer programs used for the post-closure safety assessment in the Wolsong LILW Center, the results from MASCOT, SAFE-ROCK and GOLDSIM programs are compared with a problem for degradation. Advantages and disadvantages of each computer programs are individually analyzed. Effects on the individual dose are assessed with each computer programs. MASCOT and SAFE-ROCK showed similar results for $^{129}I$ and $^3H$. However, GOLDSIM represented different results for $^{129}I$ and $^3H$. It is analyzed further and compared with the fluxes in each barrier of the disposal system. Througout the benchmarking testing of the computer program, the limitation of computer program can be continuously found out for the mature post-closure safety of Korean radwaste disposal system.
A new method for immobilization of glucose oxidate by the aerobic gamma radiation of synthetic monomers was developed. The radiocopolymerization was conducted aerobically at -70 to -8$0^{\circ}C$ with the mixture of several polyfunctional esters, acrylates and native enzyme. The retained activity of immobilized glucose oxidase was about 50 to 55% when a NK 23G ester, acrylamide-bis and water mixture (1:1:2) in cold toluene treated with 450 krad of gam-ma radiation. The radiation dose did not influence significantly to the enzyme activity. The solvents used to prepare the beads of glucose oxidase and monomers were toluene, n-hexane, petoleum ether and chloroform. 0.05M tris-gycerol (pH 7.0) was a more suitable bugger solution for immobilizing the enzyme than was 0.02M phosphate. Immobilization of glucose oxidase shifted the optimum pH for its reaction from 6.0 to 6.5. The pH profile for the immobilized enzyme showed a broad range of optimum activity while the native enzyme gave a sharp pick for its optimum pH value. The immobilized enzyme reaction temperature was at the range of 30~4$0^{\circ}C$.
Purpose : To evaluate the role of fractlonated sterotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) in the management of benign brain tumors, we reviewed the clinical, and radiographic responses of patients treated. Methods and Materials : Between March 1995 and March 2002, 36 patients with benign brain tumors were treated by FSRT. The pathological diagnoses consisted of pituitary adenomas (12 patients), cranio-pharyngiomas (5 patients), meningiomas (10 patients), and acoustic neurinomas (9 patients). Radiotherapy doses of 25 to 35 Gy (3~6 Gy/fraction, 5~10 fractions) were prescribed to the 85~90% isodose line, depending upon the location, size and volume of the tumors. The median clinical and radiographical follow up periods were 31 (range, 2~74) and 21 (range, 4~56) months, respectively. Results : In the 35 patients that could be evaluated for their clinical response, 13 (37.1%) were considered improved, 16 (45.7%) stable and 6 (17.2%) worse. Of the 33 patients who had radiographic studies, tumor shrinkage was noted in 17 (51.5%), tumor stabilization in 13 (39.4%), and tumor progression in 3 (9.1%). Of the 17 tumor shrinkage patients, 7 (21.2%) showed a complete response. Acute radiation-induced complications occurred iin 11 (30.6%) patients. Conclusions : FSRT is considered a safe and effective treatment method for begin brain tumors, but large numbers of patients, with relatively long follow-up periods are needed to assess the exact role or effect of FSRT.

The present investigation was planned to estimate potential possibility of striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius coreae (A. a. coreae), as a biological dosimeter in radio-environmental ecology. We bred captured wild A. a. coreae at laboratory and classified taxonomically based on external, cranial and tooth characters. Organ weights and splenocytic apoptosis were observed in order to establish a basic data on radiation biology of A. a. coreae (male, 40 weeks old). The biological effects was observed at 24hrs following irradiation (doses : 0, 0.5, 1, 2 Gy, dose rate : $0.8Gymin^{-1}$, $^{137}Cs$). Only thymus weights was significantly decreased. Splenocytic apoptosis was increased after irradiation. But splenocytic apoptosis was decreased in 0.5 Gy ${\gamma}$-irradiated mice compared to those of 0, 1, 2 Gy (P < 0.05). These data suggested that events in thymus and spleen of Korean dark-striped field mice, A. a. coreae THOMAS, could be a potential radio-biological indicator in human environments.

The alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay, called the comet assay, has been applied to the detection of DNA damage from a number of chemical and biological factors in vivo and in vitro. The comet assay is a novel method to assess DNA single-strand breaks, alkali-labile sites in individual cells. The effect of peach kernel extracts on radiation-induced DNA damage in human blood lymphocytes was evaluated by the SCGE assay. The lymphocytes, with or without pretreatment of the extracts, were exposed to 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 Gy of $^{60}Co$ gamma ray. Significantly increased tail moment, which was a marker of DNA strand breaks in the comet assay, showed an excellent dose-response relationship. The treatment of the peach kernel extracts reduced the DNA damage by 30 % in irradiated groups as compared to that in non-treated control groups. The result indicates that the extracts shows radioprotective effect on lymphocyte DNA when assessed by the comet assay.

Recently, a use of linear accelerator with a multi-leaf collimator(MLC) for radiation therapy is increasing. The importance of quality assurance (QA) for the linear accelerator is emphasized as the side effects of the inaccurate delivery of the radiation beam has been increased according to the high dose irradiation technique. In this study, The $HgI_2$ and $PbI_2$ photoconductor layer samples of $400{\mu}m$ thickness were fabricated using sedimentation method among particle-in-binder technology. From the fabricated samples, the electrical properties(dark current, output current, response properties and linearity) were investigated. From the experimental results, $HgI_2$ has good charge signal generation and linearity. Finally, from the signal response results about various thickness of $HgI_2$ sensor, the signal creation efficiency of $400{\mu}m$ thickness of $HgI_2$ sensor has the highest value and the excellent reproducibility below ${\pm}2.5%$.
As a series of studies on the preservation methods for boiled-dried anchovies, determination of sorption properties and shelf-life prediction were made for the samples. Dried anchovies, which were gamma-irradiated at pre-established dose (5 kGy) after packaging in both a polyethylene film (PE, 0.1 mm) and a laminated film $(nylon\;15\;{\mu}m/polyethylene\;100\;{\mu}m,\;NY/PE)$, were subjected to a quality evaluation during 4 months at different storage conditions, such as $15^{\circ}C/68%\;RH,\;25{\circ}C/75%\;RH,\;and\;35^{\circ}C/84%$ RH. The sample showed 5.47% of BET monomolecular layer moisture content and the corresponding water activity, 0.15. The velocity constants of browning reaction and organoleptic changes in the sample were in proportion to storage temperature, and $Q_{10}$, values were ranged from 2.17 to 2.40 in a given packaging and irradiation conditions. In the shelf-life prediction of the stored sample at $25^{\circ}C$, non-irradiated groups packaged in PE and NY/PE were 84 days and 125 days. While 5 kGy-irradiated groups in the same packaging were 126 days and 138 days, respectively. This finding proved the efficacy of laminated-film packaging and irradiation treatment in preserving the quality of dried anchovies.

As nuclear power plants are getting older, interests on a decontaminating process are increasingly attracting more attention. Chemical decontamination is crucial to lower the production of radioactive waste and radiation dose rate. Prior to this, oxidizers and detergents for target material should be chosen so as to decontaminate major systems and components of a nuclear power plant chemically. In order to decontaminate it properly, it is crucial to have information about the chemical composition and crystalline structure of CRUD, analyzing its samples from the target or the decontamination system with components. However, there is no program which enables the extraction of samples directly from the object or the decontamination system with components carrying genuine radioactivity. Therefore, it is limited to samples from corrosion products carrying partial radioactivity as a resource. The composition of CRUD varies considerably depending on refueling cycle because it is closely related to the constituent of basic material. After settling a target, it is crucial to analyze and obtain analytical information about CRUD as a decontamination target. In this paper, various technologies for manufacturing simulated CRUD are introduced as alternatives to unattained samples. A metal oxide or metal hydroxide was used to synthesize simulated cruds having chemical compositions and crystalline stricture similar to the actual one by 12 different methods. CRUD 4(metal oxides in the autoclave vessel) and CRUD 10(metal oxides in a crucible after hydrazing pretreatment)were chosen as the best method for Type 1 and Type 2.respectively. As these CRUD can be synthesized easily without using any specialized equipment or reagents in a short time and in large quantities, they are expected to stimulate the development of decontaminating agents and processes.
