  • This study presents a numerical model to simulate density currents developing two dimensionally. The ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is used for the turbulence closure. Elliptic flow equations are solved by the finite volume method. In order to investigate the applicability of the numerical model, discontinuous density currents are simulated numerically. The vortices due to the instability at the interface are simulated, showing a good agreement with the experimental visualizations in the literature. It is also investigated that the transition from slumping phase to inertial phase occurs when a bore generated at the end wall overtakes the front. However, the propagation of the density current is retarded compared with the experimental results. Two-dimensional modeling seems to have an effect on underestimating the front velocity of the density current.

  • The adjustment processes of mining pits in the disturbed channels by sand or gravel mining were investigated by laboratory experiments in this study. The pit migrated with speed when the river bed was steep. The pit migrated slow and steady when the pit was filling with sand, but the pit migrated with speed after the filling processes was finished. The submerged angle of repose in the pit was nearly constant during the pit was filling. The pit was filled with sand with speed as the channel slope was increased. It took time for the pit to be filled with sand as the pit dimension was increased. This meant that the disturbed channels by sand or gravel mining to adjust the new environment was dependent on the slope of the channels and the dimension of the pits. The dimensionless pit length was short and the dimensionless pit depth was shallow as the time was increased. The dimensionless pit depth was shallow, but the dimensionless pit migration speed was increased as the dimensionless shear velocity and the migration speed of the pit were increased. The dimensionless pit depth was increased with the dimensionless bar migration speed. The shape of the pit was deformed and migrated downstream in accordance with the location and shape of the biased bar front which was developed upstream.

  • Studies on nondestructive evaluation methods using electromagnetic waves have been commonly conducted to evaluate necking defects in bored piles. However, the propagation of electromagnetic waves are affected by water contents of surrounding materials. This study aims to investigate a suitability of electromagnetic waves for evaluating necking defects in bored piles embedded in sandy soils through laboratory experiments. Laboratory experiments are performed with a model pile having a necking defect. The diameter and length of model pile are 600 mm and 1 m, respectively, and the model pile is embedded in sandy soils with different water contents of 10%, 20%, and 30%. For the propagation of electromagnetic waves, a transmission line is configured in reinforcement cage using an electrical wire. The generation and detection of electromagnetic waves are conducted using a time domain reflectometer. Experimental results show that the peak amplitude of electromagnetic waves reflected at the necking defect decreases with an increase in the water content in sandy soils. In addition, the velocity of electromagnetic waves reflected from the toe of the model pile decreases win an increase in the water content. However, estimated locations of the necking defects are almost the same to that of the actual location of the necking defect. This study demonstrates that electromagnetic waves may be an effective method for evaluating necking defects in bored piles embedded in sandy soils

  • An optical method was introduced to investigate the dispersion stability of Saengshik beverages (SB) containing 3.7-11.7% Saengshik powder (SP). Time course changes in backscattering light flux (BSLF) from SB were monitored by a Turbiscan. BSLF in the bottom and top layers of SB increased by forming sediment and foam, respectively, while that in the middle layer decreased by clarifying. With SP levels, sedimentation in SB was retarded, but the height of total sedimentation layer was increased. A logarithmic model was developed to fit to the changes in BSLF with time, showing determination coefficients of 0.979-0.988. The levels of SP in SB influenced the migration speed of the clarification front as well as the numbers of separated layers; 2 layers in SB containing 3.7% SP, 3 in 5.7-9.7%, and 4 in 11.7%. Formation of clear layers started after 17-29 min and continued for 22-53 min. The clarification was retarded most in SB containing 7.7% SP, indicating the most stable SP level for the SB preparation.
