  • A reliable extraction of welded area is the precedent task before the detection of weld defects in industrial radiography. This paper describes an attempt to detect and extract the welded features of steel tubes from the computed radiography(CR) images. The statistical properties are first analyzed on over 160 sample radiographic images which represent either weld or non-weld area to identify the differences between them. The analysis is then proceeded by pattern classification to determine the clustering parameters. These parameters are the width, the functional match, and continuity. The observed weld image is processed line by line to calculate these parameters for each flexible moving window in line image pixel set. The local statistic line-clustering method is used as the classifier to recognize each window data as weld or non-weld cluster. The sequential procedure is to track the edge lines between two distinct regions by iterative calculation of threshold, and it results in extracting the weld feature. Our methodology is concluded to be effective after experiment with CR weld images.

  • This study was carried out to select the useful mutants among 20 lines treated with mutagen, gamma ray. These materials were treated with 15, 20, 25 and 30Krads, respectively and sowed at experimental field of College of Agriculture on 27th May, 1995. Items surveyed were germination rate and loss of chlorophyll at seedling stages, abnormal reproductive organs, discordance of flowering times and stem and ear height at ripening stages. The germination rate of lines treated with 15 Krad was different. The germination rate of the IK1, IK2 and Sinki lines were high, while the IK3, A632 and FR140 lines were very low. At same dose level, the germination rate of both IK1/H26 and Puyo synthetic variety were different; the germination rate of the IK1/H26 was high as above 70% at all treatments, while that of the Puyo synthetic variety was very poor at above 20 Krad. Generally stem adn ear height of the IK1/H26 were gradually decreased as the dose of mutagen increased, but there was no difference in stem and ear height of the IK1/H26 when this line was treated with 20Krad. The stem and ear height of lines treated with 15 Krad were shown to be decreased than those of check with non-treatment. The number of tiller of tillering lines were not greatly affected by ${\gamma}$-ray treatment.

  • In order to evaluate the feasibility for the sterilization of Korean red and white ginseng powder by irradiation, red and white ginseng powder (120 mesh) was irradiated by 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0 and 2.0 Mrad with $^{60}Co$ irradiator (dose rate: 4000 rad/h). Extraction rate of crude saponins by buthanol and by 50% ethanol were slightly increased according to the irradiation dose (buthanol ex. 1.7%, 50% ethanol ex. 2.6% at 1.0 Mrad irradiation. There are no remarkable changes in HPLC patterns of crude saponins by radiation. It was found that irradiation up to 1 Mrad on Korean ginseng products have no significant effect on proximate component, reducing sugar and amino nitrogen of ginseng powder and on the color density of ginseng extract with 50% ethanol. Irradiation up to 1 Mrad could be utilized for the sterilization of Korean ginseng powder whithout changes of physicochemical properties.

  • The effect the physiochemical properties of red and white ginseng powder after $^{60}Co-{\gamma}$ ray irra diationduring the storage for 4 months at $25^{\circ}C$ was investigated. The storage periods and the treatment of irradation at various doses on ginseng powders has no significant effect on the proximate composition and color density of ginseng extract with 50% ethanol. No changes in the contents of saponin and its HPLC patterns were found during the storage. However, a little increase was found in the yield of 50% ethanol extract and Hunter's color value of powder. But generally it was found to be stable in the physicochemical properties of red and white ginseng powder by irradiation of the intensity during the storage.

  • The effect of gamma irradiation on the physicochemical properties of chicken meat and its sensory quality were investigated during 41 days of storage at 3 to $4^{\circ}C$ following irradiation of 5 to 10 kGy. Immediately after irradiation, the water holding capacity of chicken meat decreased slightly with the increase of irradiation dose, whereas during storage, the water holding capacity of irradiated groups was superior to that of the nonirradiated ones. With increasing the irradiation dose and storage time, the TBA values of irradiated groups were higher than those of nonirradiated ones. The volatile basic nitrogen content of nonirradiated group markedly increased over 20mg% by microbial spoilage from the 10th day of storage, however, the irradiated groups of over 8 kGy showed only the 16 to 18mg% until 41 days of storage. The irradiated groups had a slight irradiation-odour that dissipated during up to 3 days of storage, and also they showed a slight pink discoloration in the carcasses and this tendency was much more pronounced with increasing irradiation dose. The nonirradiated group gave off an off-odour due to the spoilage around 5 to 7 days of storage and showed a change in meat appearance, while the irradiated groups of over 5 kGy maintained a fresh state during the 25 to 30 days of storage.

  • In order to develop the commercial storage method of chestnut by irradiation combined with natural low temperature, a chestnut variety Ok-gwang was stored in a natural low temperature storage room ($450{\times}650{\times}250$ cmH; year-round temperature change, $2-17^{\circ}C$; R.H., 80-85%) on batch scale followed by irradiation with optimum dose level. Sprouting rate of chestnut was 100% after seven month storage in control whereas that of 20-25 Krad irradiated group was only 5-15%. In comparison of rotting rate, weight loss and texture, 25 Krad irradiated group was better than that of control. Moisture and reducing sugar were increased in contrast with the decrease of total sugar during nine month storage and these changes were more remarkable in control. Ascorbic acid content was slightly decreased both in control and irradiated group; more decrement was noticed in control.

  • In order to develop a sanitary and economic storage method for chicken carcass by gamma-irradiation, the samples irradiated with 5 to 10 kGy were stored at 3 to $4^{\circ}C$ for 41 days, and the changes in ordour, appearance and the cooking guality of stored samples were determined. The nonirradiated samples which stored for more than 7 days were not tested because of microbial spoilage on the chicken carcasses. However, the quality of irradiated groups of 5 to 10 kGy was similar to that of fresh chicken for about 15 days though it deteriorated slightly after 20 days, however, they were still acceptable to eat each after 27 days of storage. The overall acceptability, flavor and texture was not significantly different in the samples of nonirradiated those of irradiated immediately and those of irradiated and then stored for 15 days when they were prepared for Sam Gei Tang arid steamed chicken. The acceptibility of Sam Gei Tang prepared with chickens after 15 days of the storage, the irradiated groups of 8 and 10 kGy showed a similarity to the chickens prepared immediately after slaughter. In steamed chickens prepared with the samples stored for 15 days texture of the irradiated group was superior to that of the nonirradiated fresh chicken, and there were no statistical differences in the flavors between each group.

  • A method for the identification of and measurement of beta activity due to $^{40}K$ have been developed in this institute. The method is based on the principle of : $$G(t)=\frac{A}{A_{\infty}}=1-e^{-{\eta}t}$$ where: G(t)=fraction of maximum activity A = counting rate of thickness $A_{\infty}$= saturation activity ${\eta}$= mass absorption coefficient of $^{40}K$ By this technique, total beta activity in 92 Korean paddy soil samples collected from various part of the country, have been determined and the results of this analysis reported in this paper. Most of the beta activity in soils have been accounted for to be due to $^{40}K$.

  • XRD patterns of biedellite-nontronite and saponite-iron saponite series were investigated using one-dimensional pattern simulation method. Ethylene-glycolate smectites show stronger 002 and 003 reflections than hydrated specimens do. The intensities of the 002 and 003 reflections change systematically as a function of Fe enrichment in both types of smectites. The intensity ratio of 002/003 increases with increasing. Fe in both dioctahedral to the higher scattering factor of Fe than those of Al and Mg, and the scattering power of various smectites can be compared quantitatively by calculating the scattering factors of octahedral cations. Interlayer cations cause less effect on XRD profile than octahedral cations as Fe do. Although 001 reflections provide informations about the overall scattering power of the octahedral sheet, some ferrous dioctahedtal smectite cannot be distinguished unambiguously from trioctahedral smectites on the basis of XRD profile. Simulation showed that heterogeneous smectites exhibit 001 intensity distribution that is almost identical to that of homogeneous smectites having the average composition of heterogeneous ones. The broadening of 001 reflections may not be useful in evaluating the degree of heterogeneity of smectite unless other factors affecting the broadening are well known.
