Solubilization of Sulfur Compounds in the Diesel Oil by Nonionic Surfactants (비이온 계면활성제를 이용한 디이젤유의 황화합물 가용화에 관한 연구)

  • Removal of sulfur compounds in the petroleum products is essential for the prevention of sulfur oxides. However, conventional methods involving catalytic reactions are found to have some limitations in complete removal of harmful sulfur compounds and to require relatively high cost. Recently, desulfurization process using microorganisms is known to be promising in terms of excellent sulfur removal efficiency and reasonably low treatment cost. For the biodesulfurization process to be effective, the solubilization of sulfur compounds into aqueous solution is a prerequisite. In this study, polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactants were used in order to enhance the solubilization of sulfur spectrophotometer. The solubilization of sulfur compounds was found to increase with temperature and to bo abruptly increased at above 1 wt % surfactant solutions. It was also observed that the longer the hydrophobic chain of the surfactant molecule, the higher solubilizing power of a nonionic surfactant. It was found that the Tergitol series surfactants showed higher solubilizing capacity than Neodol series presumably due to the disruption of the regular packing in the hydrocarbon region of the surfactant aggregates.

An Empirical Analysis of the Relationship between Advertisement Expenses and Business Performance (광고선전비와 경영성과 간의 실증적 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the overall relationship between the advertisement expenses and the two major indicies of business performance, that is, the total amount of sales and the discipline have contrasted the expenses for commercial advertisement with the total amount of sales or with the business performance, respectively, utilizing data on a specific product observed through 3 to 5 years. This study attempts to enlarge the scope of observation and the content of analysis. In order to attain the purpose of this study, the rate of increase in the advertisement expenses is taken as the independent variable and the two major indicies of business performance, the total amount of sales and the resultant interest, as the dependent variables. Business companies or firms which have continually been listed on the board of Korea Stock Exchange for 14 years, from 1982 to 1995, were grouped into four major business categories; 1)Food and beverage industries, 2)Fiber, clothings, and leather industries, 3) Medicine, chemistry, oil, coal, and rubber industries, and 4) Assembled mechanics and metallurgy, machinery, and maintenance industries. Utilizing the KIS-DATA, compiled by Korea Credit Evaluation, Ltd., 30 to 40 samples of business companies or firms were randomly selected from each category. Finally 125 samples were selected and put into regression analyses and follow-up tests by appropriate statistical models, in order to verify if there were any noticeable correlations. The final result obtained through the afore-mentioned research method shows that the amount of advertisement expenses has strong correlations with the amount of sales and the resultant interest. Viewed by business category, in the case of fiber, clothings, and leather industries, the relationship turned out to be significant only with the rate of increase in the total amount of sales, while, in the case of food and beverage industries, the rate of increase in the total amount of sales showed a negatively significant correlations.

Current Status and Prospect of Seaweed-based Biofuels as Renewable Energy Resource (재생가능 에너지원으로서의 해조류 유래 바이오 연료의 현황과 전망)

  • Research and development of biofuels as one of the means to mitigate global warming and to avoid fossil fuel depletion has occurred for more than 30 years. However, there has only been limited distribution of a few first- and second-generation biofuels, and widespread supply and consumption of biofuels is still far from a reality. Although a relatively recently studied third-generation biofuel derived from seaweed biomass has been shown to have many advantages, it is yet to be deployed in commercial-scale seaweed biorefineries. This review paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of seaweed biorefineries for the entire value chain covering from seaweed and its cultivation to biofuel production based on an extensive literature search and the author's experience of conducting feasibility studies pertaining to seaweed biorefineries for over 10 years. For this purpose, the literature survey will cover the current status of seaweed production and its research and development worldwide, conversion technologies for biofuel production from seaweed based on bench-scale experiments, and large-scale techno-economic feasibility studies for seaweed conversion to biofuels and bioenergy. In addition, the main problems expected with the commercialization of seaweed-based biofuels will be identified. Finally, the current status of seaweed biorefinery technology and the author's views on its promising future will be summarized.

A Study on the Flammability and Combustion Risk of Biodiesel Mixture (바이오디젤 혼합물의 인화 및 연소 위험성에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the dangers of biodiesel and general diesel mixtures currently used as alternative fuels by equipment (tag method and penski Marten method) and to determine the difference between flash point and combustion point (closed, open) according to test methods. It is intended to be used as a reference material for identification and evaluation of firecausing substances by confirming the risk of mixtures by comparative analysis and measurement, and establishing a risk assessment method for chemical substances. Method: Flash point test method and result treatment were tested based on ASTM and KS M mode, which are tag sealing and pen schematense test methods used as flash point and combustion point test methods for crude oil and petroleum products. The manufacturer of the equipment used in this experiment was a test equipment that satisfies the test standards of KS M 2010 with equipment produced by TANAKA of Japan. The flash point and combustion point were measured, and the flash point according to the test method of biodiesel and general diesel mixture ( Closed, open), and the ignition point of a mixture of biodiesel and general diesel was compared and analyzed for ignition risk compared with conventional diesel. Results: Looking at the experimental results, first, as an analysis of the risk of flammability of the mixture, the flash point of a substance containing 70% biodiesel was found to be about 92℃ based on general diesel with a flash point of 64.5℃, and gasoline and biodiesel or When the biodiesel mixture was synthesized, it was confirmed that the flash point tends to decrease. In addition, the difference between the flash point and the combustion point was analyzed as about 20 ~ 30℃, and when a small amount of gasoline or methanol was mixed, the flash point was lowered, but it was confirmed that the combustion point was similar to that of the existing mixture. Conclusion: In this study, in order to secure the effectiveness of the details of the criteria for judging dangerous materials in the existing Dangerous Materials Safety Management Act, and to secure the reliability and reproducibility of the judgment of dangerous materials, we confirm the criteria for judging the risk of the mixture through an experimental study on flammable mixtures. It will be able to provide reference data for experimental criteria for flammable liquids that are regulated in the field. In addition, if this study accumulates know-how on experiment by test method, it is expected that it can be used as a basis for research on risk assessment and research on dangerous goods.
