  • This study investigated the representation and algorithms of western mathematics reflected on the algebra domains of Chosun-Sanhak in the 18th century. I also analyzed the co-occurrences and replacement phenomenon between western algorithms and traditional algorithms. For this purpose, I analyzed nine Chosun mathematics books in the 18th century, including Gusuryak and Gosasibijip. The results of this study are as follows. First, I identified the process of changing to a calculation by writing of western mathematics, from traditional four arithmetical operations using Sandae and the formalized explanation for the proportional concept and proportional expression. Second, I observed the gradual formalization of mathematical representation of the solution for a simultaneous linear equation. Lastly, I identified the change of the solution for square root from traditional Gaebangsul and Jeungseunggaebangbeop to a calculation by the writing of western mathematics.

  • This article criticizes the dichotomous world view in which the East and the West are absolutely divided from each other and asserts that the East and the West should be understood as 'we' who ought to acknowledge each other not only as subjects but also reciprocally as 'others'. If the East is 'I', then the West is 'You' and vice versa and as such, the East differs from the West. Hence, supposing that they both regard themselves as subjects and if they realize that they can also be others against the other subject, they as different subjects should be understood as 'others in us'. Since the 19th Century the East has made efforts to learn and accept Western culture and thought. But it seems that the East has never regarded the West as an 'other in us', but rather as either an 'other outside of us' or as 'the real I that it should develop into'. This shows the self-contradictory perspective of the East. It can be thought that such an attitude was revealed as typical of the Far East in the 19th Century, in which the Opium War broke out and Sinocentrism collapsed. On the other hand, the West has never recognized the Eastasan 'other in us'. Nowadays we pursue the most actual value, that is, 'globalization'. In order to realize that value for the development of the whole human, it is necessary that both the East and West should first recognize each other as the 'other in us'.

  • This study investigated to understand how the East and the West seek information in terms of their cultural differences. It is designed to explain their cultural differences how they seek particular information when they need it in order to solve a problem in their hands. Survey and simple interview were conducted to compare their differences by sex and ages as well as cultural backgrounds. A total of 72 visitors from 9 countries were randomly selected and participated in this study. The study result shows there are different information seeking behaviors according to their cultural differences. Collected data were analyzed using PASW 18.0.

  • The previous study has assumed that dialogue and debate could not have been activated by the hierachical Confucian norm and political authoritarianism in Korean society. Political democracy has developed in Korean society since 1987. But many observers have pointed out that the culture of debate still remained undeveloped in Korean society. This study assumes that the key factor of determining the quantity and frequency of debate is the polilitical factor such as authoritarianism, but the determining one of qualitative dimension such as debate competence derived from the epistemological tradition. In order to ascertian this hypothesis, this study explored the epistemological basis of Confucian thoughts in comparison with the classical Greek thoughts. In classical Greek society, philosophers considered that the purpose of debate is to find and to ascertain the truth. Bur Confucian scholors didn't look upon questioning the truth. Instead they considered practicing or doing of the truth worthful. Therefore, in a society which were much influenced by the Confucian thought, the culture of debate could not have been developed.
