An Archaeology of Cinema as a Real/Imaginary Narrative Medium (상상적/실제적 서사 미디어로서 영화에 대한 미디어고고학)

  • This paper take a media archaeological approach to cinema transformed into a narrative medium during its transitional period, 1903-1915. To accomplish this, I will explore the question of as which narrative medium cinema was imagined and also how it was institutionalized as a narrative medium with authorship. I will explain that the imaginary and real ideas and changes on cinema resonated with each other on the foundation of its technological aspects such as indexicality, 23 frames/sec. and montage. It was during the transitional period that cinema was transformed from a medium representing spectacle to a medium of narration. The establishment of the American film copyright law in 1912 was an institutional, real outcome from the contemporary understanding of cinema as a narrative medium. At the same time, various ideas emerged that led to imagining of cinema as a complete narrative medium, incomparable to any other. From a media archaeological perspective, the imaginary ideas of media resonate with their actual course of development. These imaginary ideas are not just imaginary, but rather reflect the contemporary desire for the medium. This paper looks into the transitional period based on this media archaeological point of view. To this end, this paper will briefly introduce the notion of media archaeology as a media theory and then discuss Eric Kluitenberg's concept of 'an archaeology of imaginary media' and its methodologies. Second, it will explore literary and cinematic imagining of cinema as a powerful medium of storytelling, while discussing the ways in which cinema's technological characteristics played a decisive role in these imaginings. Also to show the techno-deterministic role of cinema in the real world, this paper will explore how its technological characteristics were considered as an important element in the processes through which America's first motion picture copyright was institutionalized in 1912 after two historical copyright cases: one is Edison v. Lubin in 1903 and Kalem v. Harper Brothers in 1909. Ultimately, this paper will lead us to an understanding of the history of cinema as a medium and its developments in more multi-layed way, as communication between the real and imaginary, and give us perspectives toward what cinema is.

  • Illusion played by mutual communication in Interactive Media Art is studied in this thesis from the narrative point of view, not from the entertaining point of view. Microscopic narrations founded in screen changes are analyzed by traditional narrative factors such as plot, point of view, narration, time creating the identity of Interactive Media Art. Traditional narrative factors in consequence have been converted to different forms after being combined with the features of Interactive Media Art. Plot has been converted to fragmentary plot and creators' point of view in many work pieces has been recreated to the outside participants' point of view. Also, creators' narrations described from various points of view has transferred to participants' narrations based on physically spacious search. Times of the present sharing with the past are observed in Interactive Media Art, too. It is concluded that audience's active participation through mutual communication makes an influence on the change of essentially traditional narrative factors. Moreover, the factors mentioned in this thesis are regarded as the unique identity of out of various kinds of modern media art.

  • In the Book 1 starting with the narrative, metaphor, prediction, implication and paradox shows the relationship and its significance of Lee Hye-ran and Ho Hong-mae. Especially, these techniques show the key and topic of this work of 'jealousy' and its conflicting 'unjealousy' being materialized and its background are being provided, and they play narrative roles of showing in advance the numerous incidents that occur within the relationship between the main characters. Especially, jealousy and unjealousy are shown through the two main female characters: the unjealousy is connected to with Lee Hye-ran to show the extreme womanhood to lead the narrative. Meanwhile, the jealousy that occurs from the affection and obsession towards one person, it disables Ho Hong-mae from having rational judgment, and maleficence from the jealousy cannot be stopped. Eventually, in the process of finishing the narrative, the jealousy is regarded as the issue of the family, and the cause of the jealousy is emphasized the man not being faithful to the family. Therefore, the solutions to the issues occurred from the jealousy are shown explicitly that it is in the proper management of the family by the man. Therefore, the narrative of is progressed while jealousy and unjealousy conflict, and in the process of repenting the character that shows the perfect womanhood realized in the fiction world and the most radical jealousy through such womanhood, this novel can be regarded as showing the ethical lesson.

  • In this article, the narrative strategy of Ryusuke Hamaguchi's is researched focusing on multi-layered intertextuality. is framed in the form of a 'story in a story that embraces a story', and the recognition of intertextuality has an important meaning in examining the storytelling strategy of . Because this movie was adapted from the short stories from Haruki's , the various stories included in the film overlap to form the overall narrative. Therefore, in order to understand properly, it is important to understand the organic semantic relationship between the texts in the movie. Understanding the narrative of is also the process of interconnecting textual content of multiple texts included in the film. In , the dream story told by Otto, Gafuku's wife, the main character, and in the play are elaborately linked to the narrative of the entire film in layers and three dimensions with text in a frame. Hamaguchi reinforces the need for the audience through the intertextual narrative strategy of . In addition, the metaphor and personalized space of contributes to the effective delivering the narrative of healing to the audience.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze storytelling factors and mathematics contents of 'Eddy, the clever fox' on TV animation. The scenario and animation were analyzed according as criterion based on relevant materials. The results are as follows: First, Characters are 11 animals, Eddy is a problem solver. An ordinary story happens in the snow-covered woodland village. There is no story plot. And the story consists dialogue, song and narration. Second, mathematics contents in the animation appear in order number sense, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability, pattern. So 'Eddy, the clever fox' is valuable as edutainment.

A Study of Documentary Archiving Focusing on the case of Archiving by Seoul Metropolitan Archives ('다큐멘터리 아카이빙' 연구 서울기록원의 수집 사례를 중심으로)

  • The documentation of a city can never be complete with only the documentation of the administrative domain, and requires that of its citizens, who are living in the city in different ways. This study attempts to present the documentation of the memories of the citizens, which either have never been produced or have been damaged and thus are difficult to be collected. From the Archival Activist point of view, this study suggests documentary as its research method, in order to leave trace of various experiences of Seoul, which are not recorded in document but are rooted in its people's memories and their daily lives. Documentaries are characterized by their narrative. This can be somewhat arbitrary, but it is due to their narrative that this study suggests documentaries, rather than oral statements, as a new form of method. While, due to its self-historicality, oral records are subject to producing redundant or irrelevant memories, documentaries enable the documentation of data relevant to the topic of collection. First, the study presents the narrative-based archiving, which is the same method of collection suggested by Seoul Metropolitan Archives, and then explores the role and significance of documentary archiving. It further presents the conditions in which documentary archiving is required in the context of narrative-based collection. The study presents the planning and implementation of documentary archiving and introduces one of the three documentaries produced by 2019 Seoul Archiving Project.

Especially, the conflict between Gangsoe and Jangseung shows the contradiction of reality. However, it can not be questioned because it is hidden behind sexual elements. 's strategy of revealing is similar in Media Narrative. has been made into a film since the 1980s. However, these films stayed at the level of B-erotic movies. The real meaning of is gone, and the sexual image is more emphasized. Incidentally, this aspect is related to reality at the time. At that time, the military was in control of politics. So I wanted the people not to be interested in politics. For this reason, many erotic movies were created. Eventually, the strategy of revealing was even more maximized in Media Narrative. But recently there was a new attempt like . This was a new attempt to go beyond the standardized approach. Future interpretations of are expected more.

The narrative and theme of (<연정 구운몽>의 서사 전개 및 주제 구현 양상과 그 의미)

  • This paper focused on the narrative and theme of which is one of the different versions of when published in 1910's as a modern printing. Generally researchers regarded different version as a means of research for finding best version. But this paper aimed at the characteristics of different version . This version kept in mind for play(drama), so we could easily find the purpose of change for scenario. 'Yeon-jeong' in is 연정(演訂) in Korean words in Chinese characters. It is sure that this word means that the text considered play(drama). The narrative of also told us that this old novel aimed at the stage. Tendencies are classified four features, first, abundant situation description, second, frequent direct conversation, third, concrete description about direct conversation, fourth, showing poem and appeal for audience. The theme of has an interesting differences in comparison to the group of best version. When main character awakened, this novel showed the most important message. In the group of best version, he awakened to the cloud that he couldn't distinguish anything. But in this novel, cloud didn't appear, in other words, didn't change the scene. Instead, main character realize himself that he changed from Yang-so-yoo to Seong-jin. It is probable that change of process to conclusion aroused reader and audience's sympathy. To sum up, we could know that this novel kept in mind for play(drama).

A Study on the Oral Characteristics in Personal Narrative Storytelling (체험 이야기하기의 구술적 특성에 대하여)

  • The folk language that lives and breathes in modern works does not just come from old stories, but it is a personal narrative which is based on the experiences of the narrator. Like many genres in oral literature, most of these personal narratives occur from the impulse of communicating and reinventing rather than from the impulse of creating. Compared to traditional folktales, stories about an individual's experiences, such as personal narratives are often performed by adding the individual tendencies of the narrator. In so doing, the phenomenon of "processing the experience by estimating it and reinterpreting the memories roughly" occurs, and this is a significant factor in making the oral literature. However, the question that arises here is: How can we deal with these significant elements that are inevitably captured when performed orally? Text linguistics, the main methodology of this paper, implies the possibility of expressing the impromptu elements of oral literature. Also, textual linguistic analysis of personal narratives provides the possibility of discussing oral characteristics from various angles which have been difficult to analyze, such as on-site atmosphere, speaker mistakes, contradictions in stories, and audience reactions. Hence, it is possible to effectively discuss oral-poetics in oral literature which are based on the one-off of 'words', the 'roughness' of the on-site atmosphere, and the stackability of the 'wisdom of crowds'. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute to the study of personal narrative storytelling that plays an important part in Veabal art in community culture.
