  • How much do people living in different communities vary in their survey responses? A few studies have examined the effect of the social environment on survey response. Making generalizations from these studies by looking at the effect of social environment on survey response is complicated due to differences in survey dimensions, including incentives, survey mode, types of response rates, and geographic levels. Using the 2000 Census Final Response Rates(CFRR) and the 2002 General Social Survey Response Rates(GSSRR) linked with the 2000 Census in the United States, we attempt to understand how community characteristics associated with survey cooperation vary between data sets. We found that people living in poor area are less likely to cooperate with the Census but more likely to cooperate with GSS, while people living in an area with more minors under 18 is more likely to cooperate with both Census and the GSS. By using two data sources with contrasting survey dimensions within the United States, our findings have implications for survey field operations and hopefully will invigorate studies about response rates in a Korean context.

  • The possession rate of residential telephones tend to decrease as mobile phones are widely spread. There is also a decrease in the access rate of the qualified respondents due to the low rate of phone book registration and that of house owner's presence at home. Such a change in telephone survey environment calls for another survey-channel which makes good use of new telecommunication services. In this paper, a mobile survey system was designed and performed by the use of SMS (Short Message Service) which is a kind of mobile data communication service. The system draws the sample by using random digit sampling based on 'quota allocation', and sends the SMS to the sample according to the arranged scheduler. Then, the survey-panel which received the SMS connects to the responding server by pressing the 'send' button (which is connected by the callback number), responding to the question. As a result, the responding value is stored in the database and is analyzed in real-time. This system is distinguished from other research methodologies for its simplicity in data collection, its inexpensive research price, and the innovatively low research time.

  • The use of internet is expanding globally in a rapid way. The situation is similar in Korea. The growth of internet affects the various aspects of a social system. Such an impact is not an exception in the field of survey data-collection. The internet survey method has gained a recognition as an important survey approach in the U.S and Europe. A number of Korean research organizations have already started implementing the new survey method, too. The time is quite ripe for the internet survey in Korea. However, it is hard to find ever a good literature review on the subject. This study intends to review the results of the past studies about the question of what factors influence the response rate, speed, and quality. The influencing factors incorporated in this review include six elements: personalization, the survey sponsorship, incentives, the questionaire format, prenotification, and follow-ups. Regarding there sis factors, the results of the past studies relating to the internet survey response are reviewed in a systematic way.

  • The internet survey methods have been more and more widely used as the coverage of the fixed-line telephone is being reduced due to the diffusion of mobile phone. So, there is a need to know the accuracy of this new survey method. This study aims to estimate the accuracy of the internet survey method and identify the factors affecting the accuracy of this method, For this purpose, we analyzed the election poll data during the 17th general election period. These data include fixed-line telephone survey data, internet survey data, mobile phone survey data and the election voting data. The analysis shows that the prediction errors of the internet survey were a little more than those of the telephone or mobile phone survey. But the differences are not significant. It follows from this result that we can use the internet survey method in social survey context. This study also found that the respondent's willingness to participate in the survey, the probability of being at home during survey and the respondent's educational level were affecting the accuracy of the internet survey. Further studies to develop weighting method with these factors are needed.

  • This study analyzed the related factors affecting to perceived gastritis or perceived enteritis for 11,753 Korean high school seniors who participated in the 2009 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYHRBWS). Of the subjects, 5,685 (47.6%)were male and 6,068(52.4%) were female and 8.7% of the students responded that they had suffered from gastritis or enteritis for a long time and the females had a slightly higher attack rate of gastritis or enteritis. Survey logistic regression models and decision tree analysis were used to calculate odd ratios and 95% confidence intervals. As a result, there was affecting to their stress and health behaviors in the risk of gastritis and enteritis, and that their lower level perceived health, smoking, heavy drinking or starting drinking before they were 13 years old and a higher level of perceived stress significantly affected the risk of gastritis or enteritis in the subjects(p<.001).
