  • High-throughput microarray is one of the most popular tools in molecular biology, and various computational methods have been developed for the microarray data analysis. While the computational methods easily extract significant features, it suffers from inferring modules of multiple co-regulated genes. Hypernetworhs are motivated by biological networks, which handle all elements based on their combinatorial processes. Hence, the hypernetworks can naturally analyze the biological effects of gene combinations. In this paper, we introduce a hypernetwork classifier for microRNA (miRNA) profile analysis based on microarray data. The hypernetwork classifier uses miRNA pairs as elements, and an evolutionary learning is performed to model the microarray profiles. miTNA modules are easily extracted from the hypernetworks, and users can directly evaluate if the miRNA modules are significant. For experimental results, the hypernetwork classifier showed 91.46% accuracy for miRNA expression profiles on multiple human canters, which outperformed other machine learning methods. The hypernetwork-based analysis showed that our approach could find biologically significant miRNA modules.

  • Tremex fuscicornis (Siricidae), known as the xylophagous horntail, and Leucospis japonica (Leucospidae), known as the parasitoid wasp, are wood-boring wasps belonging to the order Hymenoptera. These insects are interesting sources of biological inspiration for the development of drilling mechanisms. To study the biomimicry aspects, the morphological characters of the ovipositor of T. fuscicornis and L. japonica were analyzed using a stereoscopic microscope, a field emission scanning electron microscope, and an optical microscope. There were many differences in the ovipositors between the two species, such as shape, length, surface structure, and arrangement of the teeth. Evenly arranged teeth were developed at the tip of both the dorsal valve and the ventral valve of the ovipositor of T. fuscicornis and looked like a rotating drill bit. In contrast, in L. japonica, the teeth, which looked like a saw, were found only on the ventral valve. Moreover, the tip of the ovipositor of T. fuscicornis was symmetrically divided into four parts, while that of L. japonica was divided into three parts having a 2:1:1 ratio. However, in the case of T. fuscicornis, after the 14th tooth, four parts melded into three parts maintaining a 2:1:1 ratio, and a dovetail joint was found on the horizontal cross-section of the ovipositor that allowed vertical movement for making a hole. These morphological differences of the ovipositor may be due to the insects' lifestyles and phylogenetic distance. Finally, zinc was commonly found at the tip of the ovipositors of both species, a probable result of ecological adaptation created by drilling wood.

  • The importance of the robots has emerged as the means of minimizing the casualties in the future war, and, thus, the biomimetic robots mimicking the optimized organisms has been actively studied. The robot inspired lizard is suitable for reconnaissance and the surveillance in narrow areas. In this paper, we analyzed the locomotion of a lizard by motion capture system using the infrared markers. We attached 21 markers to the joints of the lizard. By considering the measured data, we analyzed the walking motion of the lizard which trots in a sprawled posture. Moreover, we proposed the 25 dof kinematic model which was able to reproduce the gait of the lizard faithfully. The model was verified by simulations.

  • The critical factors affecting the esthetics of anterior implants can be summarized as following: 1) Correct positioning of implant fixture, 2) Enough amount of alveolar bone, 3) Optimum volume of soft tissue. The position of implant is probably the most important factor in obtaining esthetic treatment outcome. The 3-dimensional orientation of implant is determined by the position on the alveolar ridge and its direction. Clinicians often try to mimic natural teeth when fabricating restorations. During the course of esthetic diagnosis and treatment, however, one should not forget to consider the correlation between facial pattern, lips, gingiva, alveolar ridge, as well as remaining dentition. Since anterior region is biologically unfavorable when compared with posterior region, one minor discrepancy in positioning of implant can cause esthetically undesirable treatment outcome. If one understands the biological and prosthetic meaning of implant' s 3-dimensional position, he or she can achieve superior esthetic outcome in anterior region.

  • Biologically inspired modeling techniques have received considerable attention for their robustness, scalability, and adaptability with simple local interactions and limited information. Among these modeling techniques, Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) play a central role in understanding natural evolution and the development of biological organisms from cells. In this paper, we apply GRN principles to the WSN system and propose a new GRN model for decentralized node scheduling design to achieve energy balancing while meeting delay requirements. Through this scheme, each sensor node schedules its state autonomously in response to gene expression and protein concentration, which are controlled by the proposed GRN-inspired node scheduling model. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme achieves superior performance with energy balancing as well as desirable delay compared with other well-known schemes.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate how the psychological factors of human interrelation or human socialization are associated with the visual design based on sociological and psychological theories. To accomplish this goal, human socialization was examined on the basis of physiology, philosophy, and psychology. Then a case study was employed to assess how they function in the area of visual design. In literature, the sources of psychological factors of human socialization were categorized into 11 items including the sexual hedonic pursuit. These items were used for the evaluation of 40 printed media advertisements, all of which were the winners of the Korea Advertising Awards from 1994 to 2003. As a result, it was revealed that most advertisements responded to the items of adaptive value and cultural imprinting as biological bases. Also, it was discovered that the existential foundation of advertising has been based on mutual distrust and the payoff matrix as a mind of social unrest. In conclusions, it was illustrated that future advertising will remain based on adaptive value, cultural imprinting, social learning, and imitation learning, as long as advertising continue to hold its reason for existence.

  • In this study, a method of self-assembly of peptides based on irreversible covalent bonds was studied by mimicking a biological covalent bond, dityrosine bond. A tyrosine-rich short peptide monomer having the sequence of Tyr-Tyr-Leu-Tyr-Tyr (YYLYY) was selected to achieve a high-density of dityrosine bond. The peptide nanoparticles covalently self-assembled with dityrosine bonds were synthesized by one-step photo-crosslinking of a peptide using a ruthenium catalyst under visible light. The effect of the concentration of each component for the size of the peptide nanoparticle was studied using dynamic light scattering, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. As a result, the synthesis conditions for size of the peptide nanoparticles ranging from 130 nm to 350 nm were optimized.
