  • A bioreactor filling with pellets and stones was equipped to the swine manure treatment system, which is expected to emit high concentration of odor in the process of the organic wastewater treatment system, and in comparison with the activated sludge process as the control process, the reactor operation state, treatment water quality and odor emission concentration were measured. The reactor using the bioreactor proved to be much more stable in the bubble condition, treatment water transparency, etc, and BOD removal efficiency was also much better. The removal efficiency of T-N and T-P, however, showed little difference in the two reactors. Odor, as a result of examining $NH_3-N$, $NH_3$ concentratio, and complex odor, was 4 times to 24 times less emitted in the system using bioreactor than in the activated sludge system. $H_2S$, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide were not found or were found in only 5 ppbs in each reactor and showed little difference between the two reactors. In the bioreactor process, Bacillus sp./ Pseudomonas sp. species were mainly found and in the activated sludge process, acterium sp. Chryseobacterium sp. species were mainly found.

  • Submerged membrane bioreactor(SMBR) and reverse osmosis(R/O) systems treated dye wastewater for reusing of industrial water. The permeate fluxes of SMBR at 20-25 cmHg of lab. test and field test were 10 LMH($1/m^2$.hr) all test. Removal efficiencies of CODcr, $COD_{Mn}$ and T-N were 93%, 90% and 60% in the SMBR, respectively The advanced treatment of combined process(SMBR+R/0) was accomplished for increasing the removal efficiency of non-biodegradable materials and T-N. Therefore, the removal efficiency of T-N obtained in 80% above, then nitrogen concentration was under 15 mg/L. The combined process(SMBR+R/0) was suitable to reuse of the dye wastewater.

  • In this study, we optimized the shape of the surface aerator that will be installed in a biological reactor using the response surface method. Response surfaces of mass flow rate, impeller torque, mass flow rate per impeller torque are generated and used to track the optimum shape of the aerator. MOGA(Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm)method is adopted to find the optimum results. By increasing the mass flow rate per impeller torque, increase of oxygen supply efficiency to a reactor is anticipated. To verify the usability of the surface aerator, PIV measurements on flow fields inside a scale-downed biological reactor model are carried out.

  • The design procedures for a biological reactor and a secondary settling tank (SST) of an activated sludge system are based on the steady state design method (Ekama et al., 1986; WRC, 1984) and the 1-D flux theory design method (Ekama et al., 1997), respectively. This study combined both of the design procedures, to determine the optimum sludge concentration in the reactor and the best design with the lowest cost. The best design of the reactor volume and the SST diameter at the optimum sludge concentration were specified with varying wastewater and sludge characteristics, temperature, sludge retention time (SRT) and peak flow rate. The effects of the influent wastewater characteristics, such as substrate concentration and unbiodegradable particulate fraction, were found to be considerable, but the effect of unbiodegradable soluble fraction was to be negligible. The effects of sludge settling characteristics, were also significant. SRT, as an operating parameter, was found to be an important factor for determining the optimum sludge concentration. However, the effect of temperature was found to be small. Furthermore, for designing a large scale wastewater treatment plant, the number of reactors or SSTs could be estimated, by dividing the total reactor volume or SST area. The new combined design procedure, proposed in this research, will be able to allow engineers to provide the best design of an activated sludge system with the lowest cost.

  • Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are obligated to reduce carbon emissions as a part of public sector greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets. However, Sewage Statistics(2022) shows that CO2 emissions per wastewater treatment volumes have decreased by only 3.03 % compared to 2020, which is far from enough to meet the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets. This study aimed to find operational conditions of biological reactors that minimize total carbon footprint (CFP). Total CFP considers both direct emissions from biological processes and indirect emissions from energy consumption. A study was conducted using a computer simulation program which is called as EQPS for a 4-stage BNR WWTP. The results showed that total CFP was reduced by 10.97% compared to the design condition when the mixed liquor recirculation (MLR) was set to 100 % of the influent flow. The N2O emission factor (EF) of the target WWTP was calculated to be 0.138-0.199 %, which is significantly lower than the IPCC default value of 1.6 %. This study proposes a method to minimize total CFP in WWTPs by optimizing biological reactor operation and emphasizes the need for further research on N2O emission reduction.

  • To investigate the effects of alkalinity on the nitrification capability of the nonwoven fabric filter bioreactor(NFBR), an experiment was performed for 641 days at a hydraulic retention time of approximately 11 hours by changing the influent concentration of $NH_3-N$ from 54 mg/L to 1,400 mg/L and alkalinity from 43 mg/L to 10,480 mg/L. The MLSS concentration reduced from an initial value of 2,650 mg/L down to 830 mg/L, then increased up to 8,340 mg/L. Though the volumetric loading rate varied in a range of $0.120\sim3.130$ kg $NH_3-N/m^3-day$, the F/M ratio showed a narrow range of $0.067\sim0.414$ kg $NH_3-N/kg$ MLSS-day. The average nitrification efficiency at each experimental stage resulted in the range of $35.2\sim100%$, and the maximum nitrification rate was 2.970 kg $N/m^3-day$ or 0.489 g N/g MLVSS-day. The nitrifiers' fraction of the MLVSS increased up to 100% from an initial value of 7.1% and the biofilm formed on the nonwoven fabric filter showed a very low nitrifiers' fraction of mere 2.2%. The growth yield of the MLSS and the alkalinity consumption rate were computed to be 0.117 g VSS/g N removed and 7.08 g alkalinity/g $NO_x^--N$ produced, respectively. Results of the research suggest that NFBR could be an adequate process for nitrification of wastewaters with high ammonia concentrations.

  • Long term hydrogen production was investigated in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) using mixed microflora. Glucose (about 8,250 mg/L) was used as a substrate for the ASBR operation under the condition of pH 5.5 and $37^{\circ}C$ with mixing at 150 rpm. The experiment was carried out over a period of 160 days. Hydrogen yield was 0.8mol $H_2/mol$ glucose with F/M ratio 2 at initial operation period. The hydrogen yield reached to maximum 2.6 mol $H_2/mol$ glucose at 80th day operation. However decreased hydrogen yield was observed after 80 days operation and eventually no hydrogen yield. Although well-known hydrogen producer Clostridium sp. was detected in the reactor by PCR-DGGE analysis, changed reactor operation was the major reason of the decreased hydrogen production, such as low F/M ratio of 0.5 and high propionic acid concentration 2,130 mg/L. Consequently the long period operation resulted in MLSS accumulation and then low F/M ration stimulating propionic acid formation which consumes hydrogen produced in the reactor.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on microbial characteristics and treatment efficiency in aerated submerged biofilm process. From the results of the research, conclusions were derived as following: 1. Biofilm density, attached biomass and biofilm thickness were $30-42mg/cm^3$, $1.2-2.7mg/cm^2$ and $380-690{\mu}m$, respectively. These were greatly affected by the variation of temperature ($5-20^{\circ}C$) and packing ratio(45-90%). 2. The ratio of suspended biomass to the total biomass in the reactor was in the range of 10 to 50 % in accordance with the variation of temperature and packing ratio. Therefore, the portion of suspended biomass cannot be neglected. 3. BOD removal efficiency increased as either temperature or biomass(suspended and attached) concentration increased. 4. The aerated submerged biofilm process appeared to be less affected by temperature variation and the estimated temperature correction coefficient of the Van't Hoff-Arrhenenius equation was 1.042.

  • A combined process consisted of a biofilm reactor and a continuously stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) was investigated for highly loaded ammonium wastewater treatment via nitrite accumulation. To enhance ammonium oxidizing bacteria over nitrite oxidizing bacteria on the surface of carriers, the biofilm reactor was operated at temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ for more than three months but the influent ammonium (500 mg-N/L) was partially oxidized to nitrite (240 mg-N/L). As pH was increased from 7.5 to 8.0, nitrite accumulation was fully achieved due to the inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria under high free ammonia concentration. The biofilm reactor performance was severely deteriorated at the hydraulic retention time of 12 hr, at which incomplete nitrification of ammonia was observed. Various solubilization methods were applied to sewage sludge for enhancing its biodegradability and the combined method, alkaline followed by ultrasonic, gave the highest solubilization efficiency (58%); the solubilized solution was used as the external carbon source for denitrification reaction in CSTR. FISH analysis showed that the dominant microorganisms on the carriers were ammonium oxidizing bacteria such as Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrospirar spp. but low amounts of nitrite oxidizing bacteria as Nitrobacter spp. was also detected.
