  • We examined the effects of the vibration stress on oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion of cultured soft-shelled turtle, Pelodiscus sinensis. For the stressed group vibration of $45{\sim}78\;dB$ (V) from electric vibrator was turned on for 15 min with 2-h intervals during daytime hours ($08:00{\sim}18:00$) for 28 days. Two different sizes of soft-shelled turtle, large (carapace length: $12{\sim}16\;cm$, body weight: $300{\sim}600\;g$, large size turtle: LST) and middle ($16{\sim}20\;cm,\;700{\sim}1,000\;g$, middle size turtle: MST) were used. The oxygen consumption of LST the beginning of the experiment (1 day) was 124.30 mg $O_2/kg/hr$, and after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of stress decreased by 47.2, 71.6, 79.1 and 86.0%, respectively. In MST, oxygen consumption of beginning day was 66.04 mg $O_2/kg/hr$, and after 28 days of stress decreased by 76.5%. Ammonia nitrogen excretion showed a similar pattern to that of oxygen consumption. Ammonia nitrogen excretion of beginning of the experiment was 0.537 mg N/kg/hr, and after 28 days of stress decreased by 75.4% for LST, and by 74.3% for the middle ones. From in this study it was showed that the physiological activity was reduced by 50% following 8.4 days of vibration stress for LST, and 15.5 days for MST.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to examine the characteristic cardiovascular response patterns associated with the imagination and discussion of anger-provoked events in patients with hwa-byung. Methods: Forty-three female patients with hwa-byung were evaluated with the Korean version of the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, Beck Depression Inventory, and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression just before the task. Subjective Units of Distress (SUDS) and Vividness of the event (VIVID) during the imagination and discussion of the event were evaluated immediately after tasks. Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during baseline, rest, and tasks were also evaluated. Results: Both startle and recovery responses of BP, startle response of HR, SUDS, and VIVID in discussion task were significantly larger than in the imagination task. Conclusion: Results suggest that it is undesirable for the patients to excessively and repeatedly recall and talk about the anger events.

  • Before examining stress and physiological variables (immunity, inflammation), this study conducted a pilot test to provide basic data by analyzing depression and anxiety symptoms by age group for stress coping and coping methods. As a non-face-to-face method, BDI and STAI by age group (20s to 70s) and face-to-face survey were conducted concurrently and as follow-up surveys. In 20s to 60s, according to the coping method, there was a significant decrease after stress relief, and in all age groups, anxiety decreased significantly after stress relief, and in the 50s, stress coping with exercise was the lowest after stress relief. Based on the results of this study, through basic research according to psychological variables, physiological variables according to actual stress coping methods were further verified, and subjects with high stress levels were treated with long-term exercise therapy for depression and anxiety symptoms by exercise therapy. It will be necessary to additionally verify the appropriate stress coping method for each age group and subject, such as the correlation between improvement and immunity and inflammatory response.

  • Stress has been linked to the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of various psychiatric illnesses. Over the past few years, our understanding of the brain and neuroendocrine systems that are linked to stress responses has increased enormously. This article reviews a series of animal and human studies to understand what are the central pathways by which stress is perceived, processed, and transduced into a neuroendocrine response. We focus on the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal(LHPA) axis and several neurotransmitter systems such as norepinephrine, CRF, serotonin, acetylcholine, and dopamine. LHPA stress circuit is a complex system with multiple control mechanisms which are altered in pathological states. CRF and related peptides in the central nervous system appear to enhance behavioral responses to stressors. Norepinephrine systems are also activated by stressors and cause the release of catecholamines from the autonomic nervous system. CRF-norepinephrine interaction makes a feed-forward system which may be important for an organism to mobilize not only the pituitary system but also the central nervous system, in response to environmental challenges. The interactions among several neurotransmitters and endocrine systems appear to play key roles in mediating various behavioral and psychological stress responses involving abnormal responses to stressors such as anxiety and affective disorders.

  • Four clonal lines of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, were produced through gynogenesis, mixed before hatching and reared communally. After 10 months, a randomly taken sample was subjected to a standardized shallow water stressor. Hematocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cells count (RBC) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were obtained from stressed and non-stressed fish. DNA fingerprinting was used to confirm the clonal nature of the organisms and to identified the clonal line to which each fish belonged. 1 observed significant differences between clona] lines mostly in the hematocrit and MCV measured under no-stress conditions. Such differences are suggested to represent mainly genetic variance, on account of the common environment provided to all the experimental groups. The stress response ratio was lower than expected, mainly due to some unexpectedly high non-stress values. Heritability values (h$^2$) were medium to high for the no-stress measurements (mean 0.238) and very low or zero for the stressed groups'traits (excepting one high value of 0.484). 1 conclude that the use of communally reared clonal lines represents a good tool for the characterization of the physiological traits, thus allowing for their utilization as genetic selection criteria.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effects of shaking stress in the hemolymph of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum by quantification of nitric oxide (NO) levels. The clams were divided into 3 groups as follows: clams placed in a plain container (control), clams injected with nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (NAME, an NO inhibitor), and clams in a container filled with nylon fiber at a density of $1kg/m^3$. Subsequently, each group was placed in sea water and shaken at 100 rpm for 6 h. The concentration of NO was quantified by using DAF assay and Griess assay. Both the assays showed that while shaking significantly increased the NO concentration, the NO inhibitor reduced the NO concentration in the hemolymph of the clams tested. In addition, the nylon fiber, which was used as a filler, effectively prevented the increase in NO concentration. This result suggests that measurement of NO concentration is a useful tool for evaluation of physiological stress in marine bivalves. In addition, it should be considered that a filler is necessary when dredge fishing or the suspended clam culture method is developed.

  • This study was undertaken to collect basic knowledge of Jatropha which is one of bio-energy crops, based on the understanding of physiological and molecular aspects under salt and drought conditions. The treatments were followed as: 100, 200 and 300 mM NaCl for salt stress and 5, 10, 20 and 30% PEG for drought stress for 8 days, respectively. Leaf growth, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll fluorescence and gene expression of aquaporin (JcPIP2) of Jatropha were investigated. From 2 days after treatments, plants treated with higher than 100 mM NaCl and 10% PEG respectively were significantly suppressed in leaf length, width, and stomatal conductance, but 5% PEG treatment showed that plant growth was improved more than control plant. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analyses revealed that the JcPIP2 gene was expressed in root, stem, cotyledon and leaves. It was not detected in leaves at 200 and 300 mM NaCl treatments. However, transcripts of JcPIP2 were induced in roots and stems under salt and drought conditions compared to those of healthy plants. Therefore, it was concluded that JcPIP2 plays an important role in improving drought tolerance.
