  • The effects of stitching thread on fatigue characteristics of polyurethane foam cored sandwich structures are investigated. Fatigue test and static test, being used in four point bending test, are performed with various diameters and distances of stitching thread. The Results show that the maximum load for bending tests is similar to each other, but after $1O^6$ fatigue cycles, the stiffness degradation of the stitching thread diameter $\emptyset$ 3mm specimen is a much larger than that of the $\emptyset$ 5mm specimen.

  • Modal damping characteristics of the flexural vibration of a sandwich beam with paaially inserted viscoelastic layer have been quantitatively studied using the finite element analysis in combination with an experiment. Antisymmetric mode shapes of the flexural vibration were visualized by the holographic interferometry and agreed with those calculated by the finite element simulation. Effects of the length and thickness of partial viscoelastic layers on the system loss factor($\mu$) and resonant frequency($\omega$) were considerably latge at both symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the sandwich beam.

  • This paper describes the crashworthiness evaluation and performance improvement of tilting train made of sandwich composites. The applied sandwich composite of carbody structure was composed of aluminum honeycomb core and glass/epoxy & carbon/epoxy laminate composite facesheet. Crashworthiness analysis of tilting train was carried out using explicit finite element analysis code LS-DYNA 3D. The 3D finite element model and 1D equivalent model were applied to save the finite element modeling and calculation time for crash analysis. The crash conditions of tilting train were conducted according to four crash scenarios of the Korean railway safety law. It found that the crashworthiness analysis results were satisfied with the performance requirements except the crash scenario-2. In order to meet the crashworthiness requirements for crash scenario-2, the stiffness reinforcement for the laminate composite cover and metal frames of cabmask structure was proposed. Consequentially, it has satisfied the requirement for crash scenario-2.

  • The failure of composite sandwich joints was experimentally investigated. A total of 30 joint specimens of 5 different types were tested with various fastening methods and core materials. In the NomexTM core sandwich joints, the core shear buckling was commonly observed in all the specimens which was followed by the slope change of the load-displacement curve. After the shear buckling, however, the joints carried additional loads of 50~200% over the buckling loads and then finally failed in the upper face breakage. The joints of PMI foam core showed the shear failure of the core instead of shear buckling and experienced the sharp drop of the carried load. Considering the failure modes, while both the core and face properties are important in the $Nomex^{TM}$ core joints, core shear strength seems to be the critical factor for the foam core joints.

  • In this study, an economical and effective processing technique to form multiple dimples on the surface of a composite part, which are known to be useful to improve aerodynamic performance and heat dissipation. Forming dimples on the surface using molds is an expensive processing because forming multiple tiny positive spheres on the surface of the mold requires much time and effort. In this study, plates with multiple round holes are utilized as a core to form dimples on the carbon/epoxy composite skin covering the core. A vacuum bagging process is used to apply pressure on the surface while curing. Composite parts which have multiple dimples on the surface can be utilized in the field which needs high aerodynamic performance and heat dissipation ability such as high speed sports car bodies.

  • This study presents a governing equations of bending behavior of sandwich plates with thick metal, polymer composite facings. Based on zig-zag models for through thickness deformations, the transverse shear deformation of composite facings is included. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported. Results of the bending analysis under lateral loads are presented for the influence of various lay up sequences of antisymmetric angle-ply laminated facings. The accuracy of the approach is ascertained by comparing solutions from the sandwich plates theory with composite facings to the laminated plates theory. Since the present analysis considers the bending stiffness of the core and also the transverse shear deformations of the laminated facings, the proposed method showed higher than that calculated according to the general laminated plates theory. The information presented might be useful to design sandwich plates structure with metal, polymer matrix composite facings.

  • Composite honeycomb sandwich plate is light and strong. It is easy to produce. It began to be applied to the bodyshell of rolling stock. Generally, weight saving amounts to 27%. However, the material cost of it is much higher than that of aluminum extrusion profile, which prevents popular use of it for bodyshell. In this paper, manufacturing processes of two light materials were compared to investigate cost impact. After cost breakdown was defined, economics of two materials was analyzed using the previous cost data. Easy production of composite bodyshell could compensate for higher material cost. Mass production of composite bodyshell can make the equipment cost lower for the composite bodyshell so that it may have strong competitiveness to the aluminum bodyshell. Operational energy saving due to weight reduction was also presented referring to the actual statistical data in a metro line.

  • A typical honeycomb sandwich panel consists of two thin, high-strength facings bonded to a thick, light-weight core. Each component by itself is relatively weak and flexible, but when it combined in a sandwich panel they produce a structure that is stiff, strong, and lightweight. To prove the suitability the honeycomb sandwich structure with prepreg, the mechanical properties of the skin materials and honeycomb sandwich structure were evaluated with the static strength tests. Accordingly, the honeycomb sandwich structure made by autoclave process is available for a panel on LCD/PDP assembly line.

  • Microstrip antennas are low profile, are conformable to planar and nonplanar surfaces, are simple and inexpensive to manufacture, mechanically robust when mounted on rigid surfaces and are compatible with MMIC(Monolithic microwave integrated circuit) designs; they have been used in diverse communication systems. The rectangular microstrip patch antenna is designed for a central frequency of 12.5 GHz, and the final product is a $4{\times}1$ array antenna with curvature radius of 200 mm. The microstrip antenna is embedded in a sandwich structure which consists of skin and core material. After impact, the performance of damaged antenna is estimated by measuring the return loss and radiation pattern. The antenna performance was not affected by this impact damage.

  • The purpose of the present study is to design a 500W-class micro scale composite wind turbine blade. The blade airfoil of FFA-W3-211 was selected to meet Korean weather condition. The skin-spar-f Dam sandwich type structure was adopted for improving buckling and vibration damping characteristics. The design loads were determined at wind speed of 25m/s. and the structural analysis was performed to confirm safety and stability from strength. buckling and natural frequency using the finite element code. NISA II [6]. The prototype was manufactured using the hand-lay up method and it was experimently tested using the sand bag loading method. In order to evaluate the design results. it was compared with experimental results. According to comparison results. the estimated results such as compressible stress. max tip deflection natural frequency and buckling load factor were well agreed with the experimental results.
