  • This study aims to investigate the current states of branch systems of public libraries in Korea and to find implications to improve such systems. Nationwide surveys to directors and branch directors of public libraries were conducted along with case studies on major local areas. It was revealed that the duties for each branch were rationally assigned in functional perspectives. The result also revealed that the branch systems of provincial office of education were planned in an inappropriate manner without considering their functional attributes. Other findings included (1) public library branches were necessary to be located in local governments based on the hierarchal structure of the following: a central library, a main local branch. a mobile library unit. public mini-library and deposit station ; (2) Saemaul mobile library and private mini-library service were the most effective when they were provided in conjunction with public library branches.

  • This study aims to investigate current status and problems of bookmobile services in Korea, especially focusing on human resources, vehicles, and collections. To do this, a questionnaire that contained questions on basic information, human resources, vehicles, collections and information and communication technologies was developed on the basis of 8 standards and guidelines related to bookmobile services and 77 bookmobiles belonging to public libraries and Saemaul bookmobiles were surveyed. As a result, many parts of human resources, vehicles, and collections of bookmobiles in Korea were inadequate to standards and guidelines related to bookmobile services. At the end of this study, some suggestions are made for improving bookmobile services in Korea. First, the human resources, vehicles, and collections of bookmobiles need to be innovated. Second, national policies for bookmobile services need to be reinforced. Third, perspectives on bookmobile need to be modified from economic approach to information welfare approach.

  • This paper investigates the applicability of a piezoelectric cantilever for energy supply of wireless sensor node used in structural health monitoring of bridges. By combining the constitutive equation of piezoelectric material and the dynamic equation of cantilever structure, the coupled governing equation for cantilever equipped piezoelectric patches has been addressed in matrix form. Forced excitation tests were carried out to validate the numerical model and to investigate the power output characteristics of the energy harvester. From the numerical simulation based on the measured bridge accelerations under KTX, Saemaul, Mugunghwa trains, the peak powers generated from the device were found to be 28.5 mW, 0.65 mW, 0.51 mW respectively. It is revealed from the results that bridge vibrations caused by moving loads is not a practical source for energy harvesting because of its low acceleration level, low frequency and short duration.

  • Though the Platform Screen Door System (PSD) has received a positive evaluation and is installed in all the Urban Railroad platforms, PSD is not installed in the Intercity Railroad platforms. The limitation of PSD in the Intercity Railroad platforms is due to the fact that first, various types of trains such as KTX, Saemaeul, Mugunghwa, and Nuriro stop at the platforms and their locations of the doors are different and secondly, they are not operated under ATO (automatic train operation). RPSD system currently under research and development, on the other hand, is based on the improved door that slides up and down and can be installed in any Intercity Railroad platform regardless of the length of the train, the location of doors, and the number of doors. This study considers the mechanism of RPSD, develops a manual open/close algorithm, and evaluates the function of RPSD. The results show that the manual open/close algorithm achieves a significant improvement in efficiency when provided with power supply.

  • This study focuses on the regional characteristics observed in the composition and floor plan of folk houses in the Young-cheon region situated in the Southern East inland of Gyungsangbukdo. According to the typical characteristics of the Korean folk house, Young-cheon region is supposed to be classified as the Young-Nam region. Our study shows that the open inverse 'ㄱ' type composition is the most common among others, which consists the living room, UtChae and one BoosokChae that serves as a living room and a farm shop. The typical floor plan is called 'Young Nam type' 'H$\hat{o}$tjib' composed of four rooms. Young Nam type of house has a wall in front of the room floor with a door to make the space with the room floor as the internal space. This can be explained by the climatic conditions in the Southern region of Gyungsangbukdo, which has a very cold winter and has a harsh spring wind in Young-cheon. The structural feature to which we should pay attention is the Young Nam type house has a gambrel roof. The evolutions of the house in the 70s are observed in the roof during the Saemaeul Movement from a hut to a modernized roof. In the 80s, the replacement of the heating system, expansion of rooms, modernization of kitchen, replacement of paper windows, modernization of roof, and construction of amenities had taken place to change the space, construction and structure following the modern house features.

  • To improve the storage stability of Korean red pepper (Capsicum annuum), the equilibrium moisture content of the powder and effects of irradiation on the capsaicin, capsanthin and microorganisms were investigated during its storage. The equilibrium moisture contents of the powder at $25^{\circ}C$ and relative humidities of 43.7, 53.3, 64.4, 75.4 and 84.3% were 13, 18, 25, 28 and 37%, respectively, and the larger the particle size was, the lower the equilibrium moisture content was under the same storage conditions. Cobalt-60 gamma irradiation degraded partly the capsaicin in red pepper or in solution at dose levels above 500 krad, but did not affect the moisture and capsanthin contents during its storage. Total viable cell count of the powder was around $10^8$ per gram and $D_{10}$ value for the mixed organisms was 210 krad.

  • A survey was made to ascertain the indigenous folkcrafts preserved in "Hwajeon" farms in deep mountain areas with the following findings: The folkcrafts which had been handed down from generation to generation of "Hwajeon" farms were very scarce presumably because of the dwellers' frequent moves from place to place owing to their insecure liveli-hood. Moreover, the surges of modern civilization and especially the recent New-community Movement could not have by-passed the "Hwajeon" areas; nowadays, the modernization surge has all but extinguished the folkcrafts that had come down from their forefathers. The recent government policy of farm community electricalization has further helped to transform these "Hwajeon" hamlets into the modernized communities. However, in the isolated hamlets rooted deep in the trackless mountains, we can still, though very rarely, find the folklore and folkcrafts closely associated with the inhabitants' livelihood, through which we can deepen our understanding about their versatile adaptability to the desolate environment.

  • As sustainable growth has been emphasized in the field of transportation, the railway system has been promoted as an environmentally-friendly transport mode. However, mode shifts from other transport modes to railway have been sluggish. In this context, to enhance the understanding of railway's competitive advantages and disadvantages, this research evaluates travelers'preferences for public transport modes for inter-regional trips: such understanding should make it possible to formulate effective policy for promoting railways. To this end, passenger recognition of competitive transport modes has been measured by applying multidimensional scaling analysis for six major inter-regional public transport services - KTX, ITX-Samaeul, Mugunghwa-ho, premium express bus, general express bus, and airline. As a result, we can conceptualize the recognition similarity in two-dimensional space, and understand how travelers perceive the six major transport modes.

  • There has been constant attempts for integration of public welfare delivery system which lead to integrated case management, then this become more significant issue regarding 'community care' recently in Korea. However, most of them was limited to fractional organization rearrangement or more use of private resources rather than realising user-centred approach. Therefore, in this research, we would like to do a couple of case studies in Britain which has rich experience of reforms for integrated approaches between health and social services and Troubled Family programme resembles the integrated case management in Korea by visiting a London Borough and a local council respectively. In conclusion, we found three conditions are required to establish successful integrated delivery system: elimination of institutional barriers relating to workforce, organization, and finance; shared objectives and partnership among the professional groups and agencies; and information sharing system with technical support regarding individual cases.
