  • In this study, a series of CFD analysis was performed in order to predict the leaving water temperature and the slope of in-situ thermal response tests of the vertical-type geothermal heat exchangers. The geothermal heat exchanger and surrounding ground formation were modeled using GAMBIT and simulation was used by utilizing FLUENT which is commercial CFD code. Comparing with the results of CFD and in-situ thermal response tests, the results of CFD was presented good agreement with $0.5^{\circ}C$ difference of Leaving Water Temperature and with 1.6% difference of the Slope.

  • The present study examined the free surface flow of a liquid sheet near a sprinkler head using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and considered the feasibility of the empirical model for predicting the initial spray characteristics of the sprinkler head through a comparison of the CFD results. The CFD calculation for a simplified sprinkler geometry considering the nozzle and deflector were performed using the commercially available CFD package, CFX 14.0 with the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and theVolume of Fluid (VOF) method. The predicted velocity of the empirical model at the edge of deflector were in good agreement with that of the CFD model for the flat plate region but there was a certain discrepancy between the two models for the complex geometry region. The mean droplet diameter predicted by the empirical model differed significantly from the measured value of the real sprinkler head. On the other hand, the empirical model can be used to understand the mechanism of droplet formation near the sprinkler head and predict the initial spray characteristics for cases without experimental data.

  • The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. New designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction methods presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.

  • The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is evaluate the application of a commercial CFD code to predict 3-D flow characteristics of wind turbine. The experimental approach, which has been main method of investigation, appears to be its limits, the cost increasing disproportionally with the size of the wind turbines, and is hence mostly limited to observing the phenomena. Hence, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Wavier-Stokes solvers are considered a very serious contender. The flow solver CFX-TASCflow is employed in all computations presented in this paper. The 3-D flow separation and the wake distribution of 2 bladed Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) are compared to Heuristic model and visualized result by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Simulated 3-D flow separation structure on the rotor blade is very similar to Heuristic model and the wake structure of the wind turbine is good agree with visualized results.

  • With the ever increasing advances in computers and their computing power, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) has become an essential engineering tool in the design and analysis of engineering applications. Accordingly, many universities have developed and implemented a course on CFD for undergraduate students. On the other hand, many professors have used industrial examples supplied by computational analysis software companies as CFD examples. This makes many students think of CFD as difficult and confusing. This paper presents a simple CFD example used in the department of mechanical design engineering of Kangwon National University and shows its effectiveness. Most students answered that a simple CFD example is more comprehensive than an industrial example. Therefore, it is necessary to develop simple computational analysis problems in the engineering education field.

  • Hyundai Motor Group(HMG) carried out experimental investigation of sunroof buffeting phenomena on a simplified car model called Hyundai simplified model(HSM). HMG invited participation from commercial CFD vendors to perform numerical investigation of sunroof buffeting for HSM model with a goal to determine whether CFD can predict sunroof buffeting behavior to sufficient accuracy. ANSYS Korea participated in this investigation and performed numerical simulations of sunroof buffeting for HSM using ANSYS fluent, the general purpose CFD code. First, a flow field validation is performed using closed sunroof HSM model for 60 km/h wind speed. The velocity profiles at three locations on the top surface of HSM model are predicted and compared with experimental measurement. Then, numerical simulations for buffeting are performed over range of wind speeds, using advanced scale resolving turbulence model in the form of detached eddy simulation (DES). Buffeting frequency and buffeting level are predicted in simulation and compared with experimental measurement. With reference to comparison between experimental measurements with CFD predictions of buffeting frequency and level, conclusion are drawn about predictive capabilities of CFD for real vehicle development.

  • The objective of the This study is to access the speed performance employing the sea trial test and CFD with the our own designed and manufactured one-man boat. The overall design process including hull form design was explained. The sea trial was carried out with a manufactured boat in the clam sea. Brake power at the design speed of a boat through the sea trial was measured as 1680 W. The flow computation was conducted considering free surface and dynamic trim using a commercial CFD code(STAR-CCM+). The result of computation provided the information that residual resistance is bigger than fraction's at design speed. The total efficiency were predicted based on the sea trial and CFD. The Total efficiency was divided into shaft efficiency and quasi-propulsive efficiency. By using quasi-propulsive efficiency, it becomes possible to predict speed performance of boat in future. The results can provide information regarding hull form design, performance analysis and development of a boat in future.

  • Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) continue to be among the most promising alternative energy devices. This paper addresses i-V characteristics of SOFC with a focus on air flow rate along the planar anode electrodes. To address this, detailed Butler-Volmer kinetics are implemented in a general-purpose CFD code FLUENT. The numerical results were validated against experimental data from the literature showing excellent match with i-V polarization data ranging 1V-0.4V. Numerical calculations of fuel cell operation under different flow rare conditions were performed in three-dimensional geometries. Results are presented in terms of concentration distribution of hydrogen, oxygen, and water. The simulations and results indicate that advanced CFD with UDF(User-Defined Function) of Butler-Volmer kinetics can be used to identify the conditions leading to air flow rate and specific surface area and guide development of operating conditions and improve the fuel cell system performance.
