This paper deals with the braking dynamic behavior of diesel electric locomotive pulling domestic cargo and passenger vehicles. Friction coefficient, pneumatic pressure, and running resistance affecting the braking system were tested. For the friction coefficient, the Dynamo test was performed with reference to UIC 541-4. The results are analyzed by multivariate regression and the relationship between braking force and ititial velocity is presented. The pneumatic pressure were classified into service braking and emergency braking. In order to reflect the characteristics of the brake valve and piping, the pressure rising over time was measured in the vehicle. In order to reflect the external force acting on the vehicle, we carried out the test of EN 14067-4 and presented the second order polynomial formula on a running resistance. The running resistance test results were compared with other countries. The dynamic behavior of a diesel electric locomotive running on a straight flat track based on vehicle resources, friction coefficient, braking pressure, and running resistance is simulated using the time integration presented in EN 14531-1. The simulation results were compared and verified with the vehicle braking test results. The results of this study can be used to analyze the dynamic braking behavior of a train. Also, it is expected that various parameters affecting braking in vehicle design can be analyzed and used as basic data for braking performance improvement.

Overloading of Commercial vehicles have been an important area of transportation as one of the main causes of pavement damage, bridge collapse, severe traffic accident, etc. In this study, we analyzed the effects of overweight prevention by analyzing overweight driving patterns and using weight sensors. First, we analyzed relevant literatures of overweight and surveyed the commercial weight sensors. Then we chose the typical type of overweight vehicles based of overweight enforcement data analysis. MEMs inclinometer weight sensor were installed to 10 test vehicles and data was collected by weight sensors and gps in real time. As a result of gross vehicle weight and axle weight analysis, it was found weight sensor could decrease overweight rate. However, since the number of samples of test vehicles is insufficient to represent the whole commercial vehicle, further studies are deemed possible through the extension test.
Using the Vehicle Modeling Function, which can model various 3D nose shapes, nose shape optimization is performed to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the KTX Sancheon. 2D characteristic shapes of the KTX Sancheon nose were extracted and a base model of the KTX Sancheon was constructed for design optimization using the Vehicle Modeling Function. The design space was constructed with the base model and does not violate the shape constraints of commercial trains. Through nose shape optimization with the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm, the aerodynamic drag of the optimized shape was reduced by 6% compared to that of the base model. The longer nose and sharper edge of the optimized shape weaken the vortices behind the last car and can reduce the aerodynamic drag.

This paper studies experimentally on the building-up process for the amplitude of a commercial truck vibration induced by brake judder. A front axle drum equipped with a drum brake system is utilized for this experiment. A brake dynamo test, a real vehicle ride test and a real vehicle braking test are performed for the analysis of brake judder. The brake dynamo test measures judder by applying brake chamber pressures of 1, 2 and 3 bar at initial brake pad temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$. In order to assess the vertical acceleration at the front axle, the real vehicle ride test on a straight test road with velocities of 20, 40, 60 and 80 km/h is performed. The real vehicle braking test is carried out at the deceleration rate of 0.2g from a velocity of 90km/h for evaluating the vertical, lateral and longitudinal accelerations both at the front axle and at the cab floor under the driver's seat. The magnitudes and frequencies of the measured peak accelerations from the brake dynamo test, the real vehicle ride test and the real vehicle braking test are comparatively analyzed. This paper shows that the vibration produced by brake judder is built up due to the brake system's peak acceleration frequency being close to the vehicle ride mode's frequency.

Active Safety system is requested on the market of the medium and heavy duty commercial vehicle over 4.5ton beside the market of passenger car with advancement of the digital equipment proportionally. Unlike the passenger car, the mounting position of camera in case of the medium and heavy duty commercial vehicle is relatively high, it is disadvantaged conditions for lane recognition in contradiction to passenger car. In this work, we show the method of lane recognition through the Sobel edge, based on the spatial domain processing, Hough transform and color conversion correction. Also we suggest the low error method of front vehicles recognition in order to reduce the detection error through Haar-like, Adaboost, SVM and Template matching, etc., which are the object recognition methods by frontal camera vision. It is verified that the reliability over 98% on lane recognition is obtained through the vehicle test.
AWS (all wheel steering) is applied to improve the stability and the turning performance. Most automotive cars are mainly controlled by FWS (front wheel steering) system except some cars which are made to improve their stability by using AWS. Articulated vehicles with a pivoting joint for easy turn are difficult to make a sharp turn because of the long body and long wheelbase. Therefore applying AWS to the articulated vehicles is effective to reduce the turning radius. The AWS control method for the articulated vehicles is currently applied to only Phileas vehicles which were developed by APTS. The paper on the design of a controller to guide an articulated vehicle along the path was published but control algorithm for manual driving has not been reported. In the present paper, steering, characteristics of the Phileas vehicles have been analyzed and then new algorithm has been proposed. To verify the AWS algorithm, Commercial S/W, ADAMS was used for validity of the dynamic model and algorithm.

The wrecker truck of lift type is used to move damaged car in accident spot or to move illegal vehicle in towaway zone toward pound.. This special vehicle drives by lifting front or rear side of car with the driving type of towed car. Each car is modelled with CATIA and is simulated with FEM analysis program ANSYS. This study analyzes how dangerous is the triple collision among the wrecker-towed car-driving car as comparing with the usual collision accident with cars. It is studied how responsible is the towed car in case of crashing its back side by driving car. The influence on the driving angle of towed car by lifting wrecker is also considered.
The railway electromagnetic environment is much more severe than most commercial and domestic environments. There are concerns about electromagnetic emissions from railways and their potential to interfere with the operation of commercial radio service and other equipment. EMC standards for railway applications are referenced as EN 50121 series and these standards describe the measurement method and specify limits for emission. However standard provide precise description of the general aspect of the measurement procedure and requirement of test equipments, making a reliable measurement of the radiated emissions from a train is a problem of balance between available observation time and the measurement time required by the characteristics of the measurement system. This paper focuses on the problem of measurement.
In this paper, characteristics and types of vehicle accidents involving buses that differ from common passenger cars are analyzed. When heavy vehicles are involved in collision accidents, the external impulse conveyed through bus tire from road surface cannot be ignored, so the conventional rigid-body impact model cannot be applied. As a solution, an analysis model which directly considers the tire impulse or considers the bus as moving barrier has been proposed. Also, as there are many instances in which the location of contact point or coefficients related to rotational motion cannot be estimated, utilization of point-mass collision model has been sought. By applying the proposed analysis model to an actual accident case and comparing with the result of the conventional analysis which does not consider the tire impulse, it is shown that the velocity of bus and other values close to the actual amount can be obtained.
Automatic vehicle license plate recognition technology is widely used in gate control and parking control of vehicles, and police enforcement of illegal vehicles. However inherent geometric information of the license plate can be transformed in the vehicle images due to the slant and the sunlight or lighting environment. In this paper, a distortion invariant vehicle license plate extraction and recognition algorithm is proposed. First, a binary image reserving clean character strokes can be achieved by using a DoG filter. A plate area can be extracted by using the location of consecutive digit numbers that reserves distortion invariant characteristic. License plate is recognized by using neural networks after geometric distortion correction and image enhancement. The simulation results of the proposed algorithm show that the accuracy is 98.4% and the average speed is 0.05 seconds in the recognition of 6,200 vehicle images that are obtained by using commercial LPR system.
