Improving the Street through the Control of Urban Signboards (도시상업간판의 관리를 통한 거리개선방안)

  • 상업간판은 단순한 광고목적 외에 도시의 시각이미지를 구성하는 도시환경구성요소 중 하나이다. 또한 건축물의 주요한 구성부분이며 주민에게는 환경적 즐거움을 주어야 하는 의무가 있으며 보행자로 하여금 강제적으로 주목을 끌게 해야 하는 상업적 목적을 가지고 있다. 그러나 본래의 목적과 달리 하나의 도시환경저해요소로서 문제점을 유발하기도 한다. 이러한 문제점들을 시정하기 위한 주민과 자치단체의 상업간판 환경개선을 위한 시도와 이에 따른 결과를 살펴보면서 환경개선을 위한 시도가 결과적으로 주민과 도시환경 모두에게 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤는지를 살펴보았다. 현재 한국의 간판게시규정은 중앙집권적 규율하의 기본규정과 비효과적인 부처간의 상이한 규정 및 하급세부규정의 미비에 기인하여 상업간판의 난립상황을 초래하였다. 아울러 살펴본 일본, 미국, 프랑스에서 적용하고 있는 기본규정도 한계가 있음을 살펴보았으며 따라서 어떠한 개선방향이 주민과 자치단체 양자에게 이익을 주고있는지를 살펴보았다. 효과적인 간판설치규정의 제정은 불가능하지만 규정은 제정하되 무엇보다 자발적인 주민들의 참여와 건축가, 사용자, 자치단체 사이의 주의로운 조화가 필요함을 살펴보았다.

  • 도시의 옥외광고는 정보전달매체로서의 역할 뿐만 아니라 그 시각적 표현은 도시미관을 형성 하는 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 따라서 현대의 간판은 한 지역의 사회적 문화적 수준을 판가름하는 척도로 인식될 만큼 그 중요성이 강조되고 있다. 또한 도시환경 속에서의 간판은 시민들이 항상 접하고 있는, 시민들의 삶의 질에 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 간판은 이제 상점을 홍보하는 단순한 사물이 아니라 건물과 가로수, 광고의 내용물, 도시 시민들과의 유기적인 조화를 고려하여 만들어야 하는 도시환경구성의 주요 요소로서 접근해야 한다. 따라서, 부분적 요소인 간판을 통해 도시 미관과 환경을 효율적으로 조율하여 쾌적한 도시환경을 조성해야 할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 중국, 장춘시 상업지역을 중심으로 사인보드의 실태를 수집분석하고 그에 따른 문제점을 연구하고 개선방안을 제시하는데 목적이 있다.

A Study on the correlation between a streetscape image and a signboard density - Focused on roadside buildings occupation density of signboard in the business area - (가로경관이미지와 간판밀도와의 상관관계에 관한 연구 - 상업지역 연도건물의 간판 점유밀도를 중심으로 -)

  • The street image in a business area is so much affected by Facade that the front side of a roadside building makes. Recently, for the indiscreet and intemperate advertising signboard of the front side of roadside buildings, a streetscape becomes more disordered than before, so now we need to do research about signboards of roadside buildings for a streetscape image. In this research, we focused on a streetscape with difference of occupation density of signboard in the business area via investigation and analysis about occupation density of signboards of the front side of roadside buildings, and we suggested optimum occupation density of signboards for supporting the road image positively. An object of research is the street in the business area that has many pedestrians and active passing zone of cars. We investigated and analyzed how to feel street images on the rate of occupation density of roadside building's signboards of in the chosen street. As a result of using an adjective that we use for estimating street view images for extraction of street images, we could know 2 factors. We named that one is the image of recognition, and the other is the image of feelings. We knew that signboard density of street of heavily recognized images is from 20% to 30% and, signboard density of street of heavily feeling images is from 50% to 60%. We also could know that people feel both images of recognition and images of feeling in specific density, 30 to 50%. Through this result of research, we can suggest Facade on signboard density with the recognition and the feeling and use images of the street view as materials to be more specific and more special.

Analysis of Color Combination with Value Variation on Signboards in Complex Commercial Facilities (복합상업시설 간판의 명도변화 색채구성 분석)

  • Advertising signboards are designed for the visibility to affects recall and recognition of costumers. It is well know that the visibility from images is created by the value difference among colors. The research defines whether the background color combination of outdoor signboards is configured to maximize visibility, by a series of color value variation in complex commercial facilities. The subject of study is to examine how the visibility is made by the color combination since visibility cannot be obtained independently. Two steps of analysis were performed to confirm that the color composition of signboards was based on the color value difference. The first is to analyze that the entire colors of signboards are clearly categorized as different value groups. All components of colors, hue, value and chroma had been analyzed by color aesthetic measures to prove that the value variation has the only regularity and the principle of composition. The second step is a further verification with an ample amount of samples to determine whether series of signboards create a value altering pattern. The data for analysis is gained by colorimetric survey and the color data are used for exponentializing the degree of combining, which shows selective affinity between each pair colors.

A Study on Non-western modernity of Surface Phenomena in Korean Commercial Architecture (한국 상업건축 입면현상의 비서구적 근대성에 대한 연구)

  • Korean commercial architecture is based on two distinctive characteristics of western modern architecture: grid frame structure and free facade. However, the original facade of the building disappears as numbers of commercial advertisements and signboards representing inner programs cover up the original facade. This is a unique feature of commercial architecture in Korea which I would call the surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture. Common criticism on this type of building is that too many and too big signboards infringe upon the original pure facade of the architecture. Underlying assumption here is that signboards and commercial ads are inessential and decorative elements simply attached to the original pure facade of modern architecture. However, in this paper, I argue that commercial decorations is an essential aspect of korean commercial architecture rather than an inessential decorative element attached later to the essential facade of architecture and that it reflects the historical specificity of cultural and architectural modernity of Korea And thus, the surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture should not be judged based upon the aesthetic paradigms of either western modern or postmodern architecture. Rather, it can be argued that surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture is a reflection of a modernity beyond the paradigm of western modernism and postmodernism. The agenda of Korean commercial architecture is then not simply to restrict or to control signboards on the building facades with the intention to clean up facade of the building but rather to integrate the signs and commercial ads with the structure of architectural surface.

A Evaluation of the Subjective Responses on Image of Night Streetscape (야간가로경관의 이미지에 대한 주관적 반응 평가)

  • As one of the important metropolitan cities in Asia, Seoul shows vibrant atmosphere in the night as well as daytime. Colorful signboards and outdoor lightings are consists of major night elements. In this research, nightscapes of four major streets in Seoul are photographed to analyze the image of Seoul at night. After preparing of slides, questionnaire survey is conducted to study people's subjective responses on the images of streets at night. After survey, SPSS 10.0 statistical program was used to analyze the results of subjective responses on the nightscapes in Seoul. According to the result, night streetscape 4(showing and business district)shows vibrant and interesting image. Meanwhile, streetscape 1(high-rise with exterior lighting in showing district)shows beautiful and harmonious image. Major factor's are named as 'harmonious' and 'vibrant'. Variable 'arranged' shows the highest coefficient to the variable 'harmonious'. Every variables except the variable 'warm' shows significant difference among the mean values of each variables.

Aesthetic Experience of Streetscape in Syarosu-gil as Urban Commercial Alleyway (도심 골목상권으로서 샤로수길 가로 경관의 미적 경험)

  • How can we explain the phenomenon of small, old alleyways in the city becoming rising commercial places attracting people from an aesthetic perspective? This research discusses distinctive aesthetic experiences of urban commercial alleyways, which are located on inner roads and consist of small-scale stores and explore the specific aspects of Sharosu-gil, located in Gwanak-gu, Seoul. The aesthetic experience of urban commercial alleyways is generated by the contrast with the refined urban fabric along main roads in terms of space, the gap between the old and the new, and the antagonism between the known and the less known. The approach to Sharosu-gil consists of the high-rise buildings along the main road built in the 2000s, then encountering low-rise buildings on inside roads built from the late 1970s to the present. Therefore, it is judged that the site has sufficient conditions to generate the aesthetic experience as an urban commercial alleyway. As a result of analyzing the street improvement projects, first, the official announcement of the name 'Sharosu-gil' was interpreted as an escape from the place specificity and garnered the acquisition of the characteristics of an alternative. Secondly, the improvement project for old-established signboards was interpreted as harmony between the new and the old and the loss of temporality. Thirdly, in the pedestrian priority road project, the pavement was interpreted as a reinforcement of the identity as an alleyway and the visualization of the area. Since the reality of urban commercial alleyways depends on the user's visiting, it is necessary to interpret alleyways from the perspective of the senses and aesthetics, not just from social phenomena or capital logic perspective. The study will cast implications for relevant schemes and data-driven research.

A Study on the Changes of the Landscape Cognition in Yong-In City (용인시에 대한 경관인식 변화 비교)

  • This study was to analyze the changes made in the landscape cognition in Yong-in City for the past 10 years. For the analysis, the landscape plan in 2001, and the survey data collected for the new 2012-landscape plan were used. The questions on the survey covered the cognition of the current landscape status, the evaluation of landscape depending on the types of landscape, the understanding of each element on the landscape, the residents' cognition, etc. In the evaluation of the status on current landscape, Everland was ranked outstandingly high as a symbol and a representative place both in 2001 and 2012. The image of the overall city landscape was changed from the image of unique, diverse, grand-scale and well ordered in 2001, to the image of wide, disordered, common and realistic. As the evaluation of individual landscape types such as the view of the mountain, the surroundings of the tourist attractions, colors, etc, has improved overall. The image of the city has been evaluated to improve gradually, especially in the level of individual element. In the study of participating the willingness of residents, despite the interest in landscape has been continued, the attitude for the actual participation in the action plan or the restriction of property right has been changed into a negative side. For the direction of the landscape plan, the residents are more interested in the detailed subjects : such as the financial support, the night landscape plan, the improvement of the problems, etc. During the last 10 years, the changes on the landscape cognition in Yong-in City have changed more in detail and specifically, the cognitions on the local government and developers changed positively. However the reducion of the participants' willingness suggested a review on the policies and the projects of the landscape.
