  • A feasibility investigation on vibration-based nondestructive evaluation of thermal stress-induced micro-failure in the free edge region of thin composite laminates(1mm thick) has been carried out. The failure occurrence and damage zone, which were predicted by the three-dimensional finite-element thermal stress analysis, were observed using the ultrasonic C-scan and optical microscopy. Analysis of the vibration spectrum measured from the laminate beam specimens by the vibration sweep test exhibited that the obvious decrease in resonancy frequency and some considerable increase in damping factor were associated with the micro-failure formation. The vibration technique utilizing short beam and high resonant frequency was found to be very sensitive to the thermal stress-induced damage in the thin laminates.

  • In this study, blood flow in a carotid artery supplying blood to the human's brain has been numerically simulated to find out how the blood flow affects the genesis and the growth of atherosclerosis and arterial thrombosis. Velocity Profiles and hemodynamic parameters have been investigated for the carotid arteries with three different stenoses under physiological flow condition. Blood has been treated as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. To model the shear thinning properties of blood for non-Newtonian fluid, the Carreau-Yasuda model has been employed. The result shows that the wall shear stress(WSS) increases with the development of stenosis and that the wall shear stress in Newtonian fluid is highly evaluated compared with that in non-Newtonian Fluid. Oscillatory shear index has been employed to identify the time-averaged reattachment point and this point is located farther from the stenosis for Newtonian fluid than for non-Newtonian fluid The wall shear stress gradient(WSSG) along the wall has been estimated to be very high around the stenosis region when stenosis is developed much and the WSSG peak value of Newtonian fluid is higher than that of non-Newtonian fluid.

  • Experimental were performed to investigate the turbulent boundary layer over the flat plate when the surface roughness undergoes a step change from rough to smooth under zeoro pressure gradient. well sthear stress was measured by the Computational Preston Tube Method(CPM). The inner layer near the wall adapts rapidly to a new surface condition but the outer flow far from the wall rather slowly. After a sudden change of roughness, the values of wall shear stress discontinuously reduces and then slowly approaches to the value in the equilibrium boundary layer at the down stream. The variation of the von Karman constant indirectly measured by CPM method shows that the flow near the wall at the downstream is highly non-equilibrium state.

  • Nowadays, the number of people who do not move actively or are treated for rehabilitation is increasing because of the disorder or the paralysis of their own lower body by the industrial disaster. In this study, the walker for the people whose bodies are not convenient or the old is investigated. The walkers due to the height of walker are designed and the structural simulation analysis is carried out. The study models of walker are modelled with CATIA program and analyzed with ANSYS program. As the analysis result, the models of 1, 2 and 3 have the maximum stresses extremely below the yield stress of this model and the elastic deformations at these models occurs. Among these models, As the maximum deformation of model 3 has the least value among these models, models 3 is thought to have the best durability. The safety of walker model can be estimated by the basis of the result of this study. The damage can be prevented and the durability is examined by applying this result into the design of walker. And it is possible to be grafted onto the convergence technique at design and show the esthetic sense.

  • In this paper, we perform a numerical analysis to evaluate the potential of fault reactivation during gas production from hydrate bearing sediments and the moment magnitude of induced seismicity. For the numerical analysis, sequential coupling of TOUGH+Hydrate and FLAC3D was used and the change in effective stress and consequent geomechanical deformation including fault reactivation was simulated by assuming that Mohr-Coulomb shear resistance criterion is valid. From the test production simulation of 30 days, we showed that pore pressure reduction as well as effective stress change hardly induces the fault reactivation in the vicinity of a production well. We also investigated the influence of stress state conditions to a fault reactivation, and showed that normal fault stress regime, where vertical stress is relatively greater than horizontal, may have the largest potential for the reactivation. We tested one simulation that earthquake can be induced during gas production and calculated the moment magnitude of the seismicity. Our calculation presented that all the magnitudes from the calculation were negative values, which indicates that induced earthquakes can be grouped into micro-seismic and as small as hardly perceived by human beings. However, it should be noted that the current simulation was carried out using the highly simplified geometric model and assumptions such that the further simulations for a scheduled test production and commercial scale production considering complex geometric conditions may produce different results.

  • Cavern Thermal Energy Storage system stores thermal energy in caverns to recover industrial waste heat or avoid the sporadic characteristics of renewable-energy resources, and its advantages include high injection-and-extraction powers and the flexibility in selecting a storage medium. In the present study, the structural stability of rock mass pillar between these silo-type storage caverns was assessed using a coupled thermal-mechanical model in $FLAC^{3D}$. The results of numerical simulations showed that thermal stresses due to long-term storage depended on pillar width and had significant effect on the pillar stability. A sensitivity analysis of main factors indicated that the influence on the pillar stability increased in the order cavern depth < pillar width < in situ condition. It was suggested that two identical caverns should be separated by at least one diameter of the cavern and small-diameter shaft neighboring the cavern should be separated by more than half of the cavern diameter. Meanwhile, when the line of centers of two caverns was parallel to the direction of maximum horizontal principal stress, the shielding effect of the caverns could minimize an adverse effect caused by a large horizontal stress.

  • The mechanical properties of 2D ceramic composites fabricated bythe newly developed powder infiltration and subsequent multiple impregnation process were characterised by both 3-point flexure and tensile tests. These tests were performed with strain gauge and acoustic emission instrument. The woven fabric composites used for the test have the basic combinations of $Al_{2}$$O_{3}$ fabric/$Al_{2}$$O_{3}$ and SiC fabric (Tyranno)/SiC. Uniaxially aligned SiC fibre(Textron SCS-6)/SiC composites were also tested for comparison, The ultimate flexural strength and first-matrix cracking stress of SiC fabric/SiC composite with 73% of theoretical density were about 300 MPa and 77 MPa respectively. However, the ultimate tensile strengths of composite were generally one third of flexural strengths, and first-matrix cracking stress in a tension test was also much lower than the value obtained from flexure test. The lower mechanical properties measured by tension test were analysed quantitatively bythe differences in stressed volume using Weibull statistics. This showed that the ultimate strength and the firs-tmatrix cracking stress of woven laminate composites were mainly determined bythe gauge length of fibres and the stressed volume of matrix respectively. Incorporation of SiC whiskers into the matrix increased first-matrix cracking stress by increasing the matrix failure strain of composites.

  • The artificial joint is consisted with the upper structure of tungsten alloy steel and the lower part of polyethelene are applied with load. When this joint is applied with load in this study, the load distribution at the joint and the stress distribution of support hole to install the joint are investigated by finite element analysis. These results can be utilized at obtaining the basic material to have the experiment for the real thing. The crack is initiated as the load is concentrated at the end of corner on the upper structure. This behavior is in accord with a case of tissue damage due to the breakage of artificial joint reported at medical science.

  • In this paper we analyzed the mechanical behavior with respect to the thickness variation of elastic foundation(fatty tissue) in end-to-end anastomosis. This study considered the preliminary deformed shape induced by suturing in the anastomosis of coronary artery and PTFE with different diameters using simplified suturing model and the fatty tissue surrounding heart and coronary artery for more accurate result using finite element method. Area compliance(CA) was used to analyze the final deformed shape of the anastomotic part with respect to the thickness variation of fatty tissue under mean blood pressure, 100mmHg(13.3㎪). And Equivalent and circumferential stresses in the anastomosis were also analyzed with respect to the change of initial diameter ratio( $R_1$) and fatty tissue thickness( $T_{F}$). The results obtained were as follows : 1 When the elastic foundation, assumed to be incompressive material, surrounded the grafts in anastomosis, the compliance mismatch of artery and PTFE was reduced by 47 -72%. 2. As the initial diameter ratio( $R_1$) became larger, the higher difference of compliance was induced in spite of elastic foundation surrounding grafts. 3. The maximum nondimensional circumferential stress is twice or three times as high as the maximum nondimensional equivalent stress in the anastomotic part.t.
