  • The objective of this research is to improve the flexural capacity of RC Beams. To delay prematured tension failure of concrete specimen and to improve flexural capacity of RC beam by increasing the contribution of FRP strengthening plates, a method for inserting a laminate to the interface between concrete and FRP materials. This method makes it possible to increase overall flexural performance of RC beam by FRP plate compared to normal RC beams and RC beam strengthened by bonded FRP plates. The new bonding technique is applicable to all types of reinforcement available FRP laminate, and in principle is also applicable to materials other than FRP.

  • In this study, a field test was conducted to determine the effect of reinforcement around the insert on the wear damage of the pickcutter. Prior to the field test, a linear cutting test was conducted on the reinforced pickcutter and unreinforced pickcutter to determine the effect of the pickcutter reinforcement on the cutter force, and the capacity of the roadheader was checked based on the results. The cutter force analysis showed that the average normal force and cutting force were similar regardless of the reinforcement, but the maximum normal force and cutting force showed a large standard deviation depending on the reinforcement. From the torque review, it was determined that a depth of penetration of 6 mm or less using the average cutting force and 4 mm or less using the maximum cutting force was appropriate. In the wear damage analysis, the number of used pickcutters, the number of pickcutters with inserts retained, the number of cases of uneven wear, and the difference in weight between before and after use showed that the reinforced pickcutters outperformed the unreinforced pickers by 16% to 28%. From these results, we can conclude that pickcutter reinforcement has a significant impact on the durability of the pickcutter. However, the cost of reinforcing pickcutters is higher than that of unreinforced pickcutters due to material costs and additional processes, so it is necessary to consider the effect of performance improvement and cost.

  • In order to know the shear performances of a bolted connection in reinforced glulam depending upon the combination of textile glass fiber, a tensile-type shear test was conducted. Textile glass fiber was used as a reinforcement, whose glass fiber arrangement was a plain weaving type or a diagonal cloth type. Reinforced glulam was made up of 5 plies and it was produced by inserting and laminating the plies between laminas depending upon a changed insert position and combination form of textile glass fiber. Tensile-type shear test specimens were a steel plate insert-type and joined at end-distance 7D with bolts whose diameter 12 or 16 mm. In textile glass fiber reinforced glulam, whose volume ratio was 1%, the yield shear strength of a 12 mm bolted connection increased by 10% when a test specimen had reinforced internal layers than when external layers were reinforced. As for textile glass fiber reinforced glulam, whose volume ratio was 2%, the yield shear strength of a 12 mm bolted connection increased significantly by about 22% compared to the bolted connection of non-reinforced glulam, and the yield shear strength of a 16 mm bolted connection was improved by about 20% compared to the bolted connection of non-reinforced glulam.

  • The effect of stainless steel jagged-pin reinforcement on the pull-off strength of the composite hat-joint was studied by the test. The pins were physically and chemically surface-treated and inserted in the thickness direction over the interface where the skin and stiffener meet. The specimens including the jagged-pins were made by co-curing process. Diameters of the jagged-pins were 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mm. The pin areal densities were set to 0.5 and 2.0% based on the interface area where the skin and stiffener meet. The specimens using 0.3 mm diameter normal (un-jagged) pins with 2.0% areal density were additionally fabricated and tested to investigate the pin shape effect on the pull-off strength. The pull-off strengths of specimens reinforced with 0.5% areal density by 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mm diameter pins were 45, 19 and 9% higher than those of un-reinforced specimens, respectively. In case with 2.0% pin areal density, the strengths were 127, 45, and 11% higher than those of un-reinforced specimens, respectively. The test results show that the higher pin areal density results in the higher strength when the pin diameter is the same. When the pin areal density is the same, the smaller pin diameter leads to higher strength. When the joints using jagged-pins and normal pins in 2.0% areal density with 0.3 mm diameter, the joints of jagged-pins showed the 64% higher strength. From the results of this study, it was confirmed that jagged-pin reinforcement can be an effective method for improving the pull-off strength of composite hat-joint.

  • When historical or cultural buildings need to be repaired or reinforced, the changes of original features should be minimized, and the strengths of structures should be improved. Among the existing methods to reinforce historical wood structures, the carbon fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP) installation method is one of the best ones to achieve the afore-mentioned requirements. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the reinforcing effects and failure modes of timber beams reinforced with the inserted CFRP, a part of roof trusses in modern wood structures, and at providing the fundamental test data to estimate the CFRP rein-forced timber beam in the application of this reinforcing method. The primary parameters in this study were the layout and amount of CFRP. It was observed that, when $0.3{\sim}0.7%$ of CFRP were installed, the strengths of reinforced timber beams increased up to 173% compared to its original strength, but their strengthening effects were heavily influenced by the characteristics of timber such as burls. In order to improve the applicability of this strengthening method, fundamental understandings on the characteristics of wood would be necessary, and there would be in need of researches on the non-destructive test for wood structures as well.

  • Reinforced concrete beam are very diverse materials that are used to bending reinforcement. Recently the case of FRP flexural reinforcement is actively being used is an excellent weight - rigidity. However, use of FRP bending reinforcement in brittleness material properties of concrete in an actual field application causes destruction of detachment and attachment is being considered as a major cause of destruction. For hybrid laminating plates, tensile and three-point bending tests were performed considering various designs and fabricating methods for hybrid FRP plates. Tensile property of each test specimen was investigated and the research parameter of hybrid laminating plates considered here is the combining ratio of fiber to aluminum contents.

  • To verify the reinforcing effect of the strips which are inserted in the backfill, but not connected to the face wall, model tests are executed. As the reinforcing effect is expected to reduce the active thrust acting on the retaining wall, test programmes included the measurements of the thrust. As a result. it is ascertained that the active thrusts are reduced by as much as 50%. Besides, efficient arrangement and the optimum length of the strips are verified. And the the number of reinforcing strips are increased, are close to the Rankine's hypothesis.

  • The asphalt concrete pavement takes various advantages of better riding quality, serviceability and easier maintenance. At the same time, it addresses a weak point of the premature failures due to rapid increasement of traffic volume, heavy vehicles and high temperature in summer. It increases the expenditure of maintenance and repair. In order to improve the performance of asphalt pavement avoiding this premature failure, the use reinforcements with geosynthetics have been considered. Geosynthetics are known as an effective reinforcement to restrain fatigue and reflective cracks in asphalt pavements. In this study, a comprehensive parametric study is conducted to capture the efficiency of geosynthetic-reinforcements using viscoelastic properties of the asphalt concrete(AC) layer. The investigated parameters were reinforcement location, AC layer thickness, temperature distribution across the AC layer and modulus of AC and base layer. As a result of observations, that reinforced asphalt concrete could be used effectively for improving resistance against fatigue cracks and permanent deformation. Especially, when a geogrid was placed at the interface between the asphaltic base and the subbase, tensile stress in the horizontal direction was significantly reduced.

  • The new technique has been used to determine the soil-reinforcement interaction. The testing apparatus is essentially a triaxial cell fitted with the capability to house a hollow cylinderical sample. A hollow cylinderical sand specimen with a concentrical layer of reinfarcing material sandwitched in the middle is used in this investigation. The reinforcement is fastened at the base. The hollow specimen can be viewed as a "unit sheet" of a soil-reinforcement composite system of infinite horizontal extent. Axial load as well as inner and outer chamber pressures can be applied to perform a test. The specimen is first subjected to an isotropic stress state corresponding to the overburden pressure. Next, an extension test by reducing the axial load is carried out. The specimen is "loaded" to failure by either the breakage of reinforcing material (tensile failure) or slippage which takes place at the soil-reinforcement interface (i.e. the overcoming of the bonding capacity). Since the reinforcement is fastened at its lower end to the base, any tendency of relative movement between the reinforcement and the sand during an extension test can induce tensile force in the reinforcement thus forming a "reversed pull-out" test condition. Preliminary test results have demonstrated positively of the new approach to test the soil-reinforcement interaction. Reinforcing elements of different extensibility were used to study the deformbility of reinforced soil. Furthermore, both the breakage and the pull-out modes of failure were observed.
