  • Ricania shantungensis is a pest causiong problems in many crops. We tested the possibility of controling Ricania shantungensis using essential oil of Valeriana fauriei which were extracted by three different methods (steam distillation, solvent and supercritical extraction). Steam distillation were showed the most high mortality to adult ($1,040{\mu}L/mL$) and nymph ($2,370{\mu}L/mL$) of R. shantungensis. The yield of steam distillation extraction was 0.67%, which was lower than other methods. However, it is determined that steam extraction was showed higher efficiency by considering time and cost. The result of this study showed the possibility of control R. shantungensis by essential oil of V. fauriei.

  • In order to investigate fatty acid contents and effects of cell growth on the production of an extracellular protease and toxicity of exotoxin, several symbiotic bacteria with highly effective toxins were isolated from seven species of entomopathogenic nematodes belong in Steinernematidae(Steinernema glaseri XR-DR, S. glaseri XR-NC, S. glaseri XR-MK, S. carpocapsae XR-PC, S. maticola XR-MO, S. Longicaudum XR-LC) and Heterorhabditidae sp.(Heterorhabditis bacteriophora XR-HY). In the cell growth and exotoxin toxicity, XR-PC and XR-MK were superior to other species when cultured in vitro. The protease activity of XR-DR was remarkable compared to other species. In the case of XR-HY, the protease activity increased in parallel with cell growth. Interestingly the fatty acid contents of XR-PC and XR-HY were significantly different from those of other species 12:0, 14:0, 13:0 iso, 16:1 cis 5 and 17:0 cyclo.

  • This study was conducted with n-hexane extracts of sensitive plant Mimosa pudica, mexican poppy Argemone mexicana, panimarich Leucus aspara, water pepper Polygonum hydropiper and shialmutra Blumea lacera weeds against pulse beetle Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) for protection of mung bean Vigna radiata grains. The $LC_{50}$ values of the weed extracts ranged from 4.5 to 6.4, 4.1 to 5.6 and 3.6 to 5.5 g/100 mL at 24, 48 and 72 hours of post treatment, respectively. The extracts showed 35 to 69% fecundity and 33 to 63% adult emergence inhibitory effect on the pest, and revealed 13 to 49% grain protection of mung beans. Insect mortality, fecundity and adult emergence inhibitory effects, and grain protection activity increased with increased concentration of the extracts. The shialmutra followed by water pepper extracts revealed better performances in fecundity and adult beetle emergence inhibitory effect compared to the other weeds. The findings proved that the n-hexane extracts of the five weeds are sources of botanical insecticides which may be used in the integrated management of C. chinensis.

  • A Insecticidal effect of Ginkgo biloba leaves extract was conducted for Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus as a predominant species in korea. D. pteronyssinus has been cultured in constant temperature and humidity chamber at the 25$^{\circ}C$ and 75% of relative humidity. The mortality of mites was determined by counting the dead bodies for every hour within 48 hours with pin hall microscope after treated by Ginkgo biloba leaves extract spreaded on 0.1 g of mass cultured media. The sequence of mortality for D. pteronyssinus are as follows, bilobalide was 91.6%, 80$^{\circ}C$ water extract was 82.8%, second water fraction was 75%, ethyl acetate fraction from 80$^{\circ}C$ water fraction was 73%, first ethyl acetate fraction from 80$^{\circ}C$ water extract was 69.4%, putaltrin was 65%, distilled water was 58%, methanol extract was 57.8%, Ginkgolide-A was 57.1 %, ethyl acetate fraction of 80$^{\circ}C$ water extract was 55%, respectively. From the these results we conclude that the bilobalide is the most effective component in the Ginkgo biloba leaves extract having insecticidal effect on house dust mite.

  • Scale insects heavily damaged many agricultural crops and trees in urban and forest areas. This study was conducted to carry out alternative control methods for environmentally friendly control of scale insects. Hot water extract of Quisquali indica produced high mortality against the black pine bast scale, Matsucoccus thunbergianae in previously experiment. Methanol extract obtained from fruit of Q. indica was successively fractionated using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, buthanol and water which were examined by exposing for their insecticidal activity against four Cocoidea species (Eriococcus lagerstroemiae, Ceroplastes japonicus, Crisicoccus pini and Planococcus citri) in laboratory. Hexane fraction gave the highest insecticidal activity against scale insect pest. GC-mass analysis confirmed that the main compounds of Q. indica were alpha-pinene, methyl palmitate, eugenol, methyl myristate, phthalic acid mono(2-ethylhexyl)ester and palmitic acid. Among those compounds, ${\alpha}$-pinene was included 10 hexane subfractions. $LC_{50}$ of ${\alpha}$-pinene was 0.0114 ppm against 2nd instar of E. lagerstroemiae. These results suggest that Q. indica extracts might be used as an alternative control agent of scale insects.

  • To overcome the problems associated with chemical pesticides, biological pest controls agent extracted from Ginkgo biloba was studied. Insecticidal activities components in Ginkgo biloba extracts were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This results of HPLC analysis, GG-W80 were included bilobalide $611\;{\mu}g/kg$, ginkgolide A $37\;{\mu}g/kg$ and ginkgolide B $243\;{\mu}g/kg$, while YG-W80 were included bilobalide $214\;{\mu}g/kg$ and ginkgolide B $46\;{\mu}g/kg$. The biological activity of Ginkgo biloba extracts were conducted to repellent and pesticidial effect of Tetranichus urticae, Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae treated with Ginkgo biloba leaves extracts. Mortalities of adult T. urticae to green Ginkgo biloba extracts (GG-W80) and yellow Ginkgo biloba extracts (YG-W80) were shown 98.3% and 20.0%, respectively. From these results, terpenes components in Ginkgo biloba extracts could be use for biological controls for T. urticae.
