Urban industrial and structure and diversification:converging trend among urban economies (도시산업구조와 다변화:도시경제간의 수렴성향)

  • This study examines the competitiveness of urban industrial structure and its changing characteristics. Cluster analysis of Arizona towns based on economic functions revealed the changing characteristics of urban functions over time. The relationship between the changes of urban functions and industrial competitiveness was confirmed through shift-share analysis. The level of industrial specialization has become more closely related to urban size in terms of both population and employment, but the relationship between metropolitan location and specialization level is not clear. Also, it is validated that the economies of Arizona towns have become more diversified and, consequently, have tended to converge toward the state average in industrial structure over time.

  • 경남지역 역사이래 구한말까지 지역중심도시였으나 근대화의 길에서 빗겨나간 1천년 역사도시 진주, 개화기부터 제3공화국까지 경남의 산업도시로서 지역발전에 중심역할을 다하고 있는 산업도시 마산, 그리고 정치적 결단으로 재빠르게 건설된 계획도시이며 경남도청소재지인 행정도시 창원. 각 도시가 살아온 배경이 너무나 다른 세 도시를 하나의 권역으로 묶어 논하기는 정말 어렵지만 경남 남부지역의 거점도시들로서 각 도시들이 띠고 있는 지역적 특성과 건축의 모습, 그리고 각 도시에서 지역적 특성들을 만들어내고 있는 지역건축가들을 개관한다. 아울러 경남 남부지역건축의 지역성은 가능한가에 대해 토론하며 지역의 정체성을 찾아보아 진주 ㆍ마산ㆍ창원으로 대표되는 경남남부 지역의 도시건축의 미래와 발전방향을 가름한다.

Industrial Structure and Competitiveness of Large Cities in Korea (지방대도시 산업구조와 산업경쟁력 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyse the industrial structure and competitiveness of five large cities in Korea. say Pusan, Taegu, Inchon, Kwangju, and Taejon. These cities are performing more important roles in this borderless society. Industrial competitiveness may not fully represent the competitiveness of a city, rather is one of the major constituents of urban competitiveness. The selected indices representing industrial competitiveness of a city include regional industrial share, location quotient, growth potential. productivity. profitability. The analyses reveal that all the five large cities are required the tasks for industrial restructuring in facing with the rapid deindustrialization trend. Inchon shows relatively competitive position in a number of industries, while the others are revealed weak in most categories of industries.

  • The capitalist economic process of glocalization and development of transportation and communication technology have led us to the significance of network city as well as concepts of global city, megacity region, etc. Network city theory pursues development of both individual cities and of the region of those cities through strengthening of mutual connectivity among them with specialized industries. On the basis of network city theory, this paper is to analyze specialized industries of cities and connectivity among them in the Youngnam region in S. Korea. It uses the methods of locational quotient, locational Gini coefficient, and shift-share method to analyze specialized industries of cities, and correspondence analysis, global and local Moran's I to examine connectivity among cities. As results, it can be identified that each city in the Youngnam region has its own specialized industries different from each others, but it seems not easy to grasp the overall extent of connectivity among them, partly because of the limitations of applied analysis methods and partly because of a lack of connectivity among cities themselves.

A Study on the Creative Industry Population Based on Different Spatial and Non-Spatial Urban Structure (공간적·비공간적 도시구조 변화에 따른 창조산업 인구 연구)

  • A number of cities have been constantly decreasing their residents by the low quality of life and environment. A creative industry is being noticed for not only securing the competitiveness of the city but also increasing the number of population. Thus, the urban structure for inducing creative industry population becomes to major issue to the most of local governments. This study aims to suggest the relationships between urban structure and creative industry population based on different urban sizes. To measure the population of creative industry, this study used the 'National Business Survey' by the National Statistical Office, which classified the statistical data of industrial places on a basis of city, district, and borough. Based on the results of expert questionnaire surveys, it conducted an analysis on the importance of urban structure and drew some critical factors that have an important effect on attracting the population of creative industry. The relationships between creative industry population and urban structure evaluated by multiple regression analysis. This study found out that the cultural factors like cultural space or culture events were drawn as very significant factors that have a positive effect on the population of creative industry population. It is judged that the creation of culture environment, which can enrich the creative industry, is needed to strengthen the competitiveness of the cities.

Sustainable Urban Industrial Space Policy: Experiences and Implications from US Cities (지속가능한 도시산업공간 정책 -미국 주요 도시의 경험과 시사점-)

  • This study attempted to seek policy directions for development of sustainable urban industrial space through reviewing recent policies and projects of US cities that experienced urban industrial land replacement and industrial suburbanization. The policies and regulations for the urban industrial space preservation include the New York City's Industrial Business Zone, Chicago's Planned Manufacturing District, the no-net-loss framework in San Jose, and the subdivided and the state of the art in zoning systems in Philadelphia and Seattle. These policies and zoning systems have been effective for preventing the conversion of urban industrial lands to other uses, promoting business activities, and creating jobs for urban residents. In addition, the updated and innovative zoning systems allow for a wide variety of urban industrial spaces to meet newly emerging industrial demands. On the other hand, we suggested several policy implications through reviewing the cases of urban regeneration projects in Portland's Willamette Industrial Urban Renewal Area, Atlanta's BeltLine, and Milwaukee's Menomone Valley as follows: 1) updating and reinforcing spatial planning and policies for preservation and revitalization of urban industrial land; 2) considering existing businesses and local workers first; 3) setting up a participatory planning for local workers and residents; 4) preparing policies for brownfield cleanups.

Theoretical Examination of Network cities and Application Possibility for South-East Region in Korea (네트워크도시의 이론적 검토와 동남권에의 적용 가능성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper aims to draw essential facts of network city, to analyze the urban corridor in South-East region, Korea, as a network city. Firstly, the characteristics of the network city is examined theoretically. The global economy is developing an innovative class of network cities. A network cities evolve when two or more previously independent cities, potentially complementary in function, strive to cooperate and achieve significant scope economies aided by-fast and reliable transport and communications infrastructure. Network Cities place a higher priority on knowledge-based activities like research, education and the creative arts. Each constituting city stands to benefit from the synergies of interactive growth via reciprocity, knowledge exchange and unexpected creativity. Secondly, we discussed the network structure of cities in South-East region, Korea itself intensively. We survey the network location and outline of the urban corridor in South-East region, spatial specialization and interaction between the constituting cities. We also discussed the problems of the network cities in South-East region, Korea and introduced the desirable policies and alternatives. We can ascertain from the case study of cities in South-East region that the cities in South-East region corresponds the network city model fairly.

Industrial Path Changes in Shipbuilding Cities: Focusing on the Decline of the Shipbuilding Industry Since 2010s (조선업 특화 도시의 산업 경로 변화: 2010년대 이후 조선업 불황을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the industrial structural changes and types of specialized in the shipbuilding cities, which are representative sectors of industrial city decline, and explore regional responses. Most cities designated as special areas for industrial crisis response in 2018 are specialized in shipbuilding. While the shift from prosperity to recession since the 2010s is the main factor, each city has responded differently to the industrial crisis. The analysis, targeting seven shipbuilding cities, shows that regions where large shipyards of major corporations with high industrial competitiveness are located have relatively less decline during business fluctuations, and there is a tendency for a decrease in industrial structural diversity during prosperous periods and an increase during recessionary periods. Based on the resistance and recoverability to industrial crises, the industrial paths of shipbuilding cities are classified into four types. Considering regional industrial structure and competitiveness, it is necessary to develop customized support strategies such as maintaining and declining shipbuilding industries and fostering new alternative industries.

  • "산업화는 늦었지만 정보화는 앞서가자."라는 구호아래 각 지방자치단체가 경쟁적으로 정보화 도시를 꿈꾸고 있다. 산업화에서 크게 뒤져있는 강원도 그 중에서도 원주시가 도시발전방향으로 정보통신분야를 주력산업으로 하려는 청사진을 마련하려 하고 있다. 도내에서는 산업화 조건이 가장 양호한 원주시가 대규모의 공해산업유치보다는 공해가 없는 첨단 정보통신산업의 유치를 통하여 도시발전을 모색하려는 것은 어쩌면 필연이라고 해야 할 것이다. 지방자치제가 본격적으로 성숙되면서 지방중심으로 경제활성화의 주요시책들이 거론되는 시점에 이러한 세미나를 개최를 통하여 과연 원주시가 정보통신도시로 거듭 태어나 지역경제를 활성화시킬 수 있는 방안을 논의하는 것은 뜻깊은 일이라 생각된다.

The Relationship between Economic Growth of Sea Port City and Ocean Industries: Focused on Busan Metropolitan City (해항도시의 경제성장과 해양산업 간의 관계 - 부산시를 중심으로 -)

  • This study examines the issue of causality between ocean industries and urban economic growth in the sea port city. To maximize economic advantage of Busan as a sea port city, we first need to analyze the effects of ocean industries on urban economic growth. This study focuses on the examination of the role of ocean industries and its related variations in economic growth at the urban level. Using data from Busan. Metropolitan City in Korea during 1985-2011, we find that the causality link between ocean industries and urban economic growth rates runs in both directions. Especially, industries of shipping/port, marine tourism, and shipbuilding were the most important variables in Busan economy. With this information, the empirical results show that ocean industries and its related variations have significant effects on urban economic growth. Based on these significant research findings, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
