In this study, activated carbons (ACs) were modified as electrode materials for an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) by controlling oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups. The morphological and chemical properties of ACs were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, automatic elemental analyzer (EA) and Boehm titration. Also, charge/discharge tests were performed to investigate the EDLC performance. Oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups were introduced on the surface of ACs through acid and urea treatments, respectively. ACs with nitrogen-containing functional groups showed 2 mA increase of gravimetric discharge capacity and quick achievement of maximum charge/discharge performance. However, ACs with oxygen-containing functional groups showed low discharge capacity and its gradual decrease during further cyclic test, since the functional groups interrupted adsorption/desorption of charges in the electrolyte on the surface of ACs.
In this work, the electrochemical properties of the surface treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are investigated for supercapacitors. Nitrogen- and oxygen functional groups containing MWNTs are prepared by nitrogen precursors and acidic treatment, respectively. The surface properties of the MWNTs are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Zeta-potential measurements. The electrochemical properties of the MWNTs are investigated by cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectra, and charge-discharge cycling performance in 1 M $H_2SO_4$ at room temperature. As a result, these functionalized MWNTs lead to an increase in the specific capacitance as compared with the pristine MWNTs. It proposes that the pyridinic and pyridinic-N-oxides nitrogen species influence on the specific capacitance due to their positive charges, and thus an improved electron transfer at high current loads, since they are the most important functional groups affecting capacitive behaviors.
The palladium and gold nanoparticles containing PAN-based active carbon fiber (ACF) with a high specific surface area were prepared. Using the BET, TEM, FE-SEM, and XPS, their specific surface area and pore volume, pore structure, and the change in surface oxygen groups with time were analyzed and $SO_2$ adsorption performances were investigated. Because of the impregnating process, the micropore volume was mostly decreased from 95.5% to 30.5~43.7% compared with the total pore volume. And the change in surface oxygen groups with time was higher for the metal salt than the nanoparticles. Also, $SO_2$ breakthrough time of PAN-ACFs impregnated with Au nanoparticles and metal salts did not change compared with that of the non-impregnated PAN-ACF. But the PAN-ACF impregnated with Pd nanoparticles (100 ppm) showed good $SO_2$ adsorption performance as the breakthrough time of 880 sec. These results indicated that the $SO_2$ adsorption performance depended on the change in surface oxygen groups with time and the moderate impregnation of Pd nanoparticles on the PAN-ACF caused the increase in the $SO_2$ adsorption performance by a catalytic action.
In this study, pitch-based carbon fibers in the acid were radiated with an electron beam to modify their surface, and surface changes were investigated according to each treatment conditions. Nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide were used as a drenched acidic solution and an electron beam dose was set to 200 and 400 kGy. The use of nitric acid introduced more oxygen functional groups on carbon fiber surfaces than that of using hydrogen peroxide, and also introduced nitrogen functional groups into the carbon fiber surface. In addition, oxygen functional groups introduced on carbon fiber surface increased as the electron beam dose increased due to the fact that the oxidizing material can be easily formed by e-beam radiation in nitric acid than the hydrogen peroxide, and also the higher energy electron beam dose can help forming more oxidizing materials. Moreover, the generation of C=O functional groups was favorable when using nitric acid because oxidizing C-OH functional groups to the C=O functional groups mainly occurred by $NO_2$ radicals generated by the electron beam radiation in a nitric acid solution.
The surface of low density polyethylene (LDPE) film was oxyfluorinated under different reaction conditions to introduce hydroperoxide groups and change surface characteristics. Hydroperoxide functional groups created by oxyfluorination were used as active sites for graft polymerization with hydrophobic monomer, acryl amide (AM), and hydrophilic monomer, methyl methacrylate (MMA) to carry out the second modification of the LDPE film surface. The surface properties of the OFPE films and grafted OFPE films were characterized by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method, ATR-IR, contact angle measurement and DSC. From the results of DPPH method, the amount of hydroperoxide groups on the oxyfluorinated LDPE film continuously increased as the total pressure in the oxyfluorination and the partial pressure of fluorine gas increased. The water contact angle and surface free energy measurements showed that hydrophilic liquid (water) contact angle on LDPE film surface decreased with hydrophilic AM grafting and hydrophobic liquid (methylene diiodide) contact angle on LDPE film surface decreased with hydrophobic MMA grafting. These were attributed to AM or MMA monomer grafting and the wettability of LDPE filmsurface to hydrophilic and hydrophobic liquids were improved.
Pitch based activated carbon fibers for electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrodes were treated by oxyfluorination via varying the ratio of fluorine and oxygen gases to improve high power property. As the partial pressure of fluorine increased, the oxyfluorinated activated carbon fibers showed an increase of linear fluorine functional groups. While the oxygen functional groups increased, no changes was observed with respect to the partial gas pressure. The specific surface area and pore volume decreased due to the etching reaction on the activated carbon fiber surface through oxyfluorination, but the mesopore volume increased about 4.5 times. In the case of activated carbon fibers treated with 50% of the fluorine gas partial pressure, the specific capacitance increased to about 29% and 61% at scan rates of 5 and 50 mV/s, respectively. The improvement of the specific capacitance was believed to be due to the introduction of oxygen and fluorine functional groups on the activated carbon fiber surface and the increase of mesopores through oxyfluorination.

The effect of introducing oxygen functional groups by oxygen plasma treatment of activated carbon on adsorption properties of cesium ions was investigated. During the oxygen plasma treatment, the frequency, power, and oxygen gas flow rates were fixed at 100 kHz, 80 W, and 60 sccm, respectively, while the reaction time was varied. Under the experimental conditions, the amount of cesium ion adsorption increased as the content of oxygen groups on C-O-C and O=C-O bonds increased when the reaction time with oxygen gas was 10 minutes. However, when the reaction time increased to 15 minutes, the oxygen functional group content decreased resulting in the decrease of the adsorbed cesium ion amount. On the other hand, unlike the oxygen content of the surface-treated activated carbon, the specific surface area and pore properties were hardly affected by the oxygen plasma reaction time. As a result, the oxygen plasma-treated activated carbon improved the cesium ion removal rate by up to 97.3% compared to that of the untreated activated carbon. This is considered to be due to the content of oxygen groups on C-O-C and O=C-O bonds introduced on the surface of the activated carbon through oxygen plasma treatment.
In this work, the surface properties and mechanical interfacial properties of the carbon blacks treated by oxygen plasma were investigated. The surface properties of carbon black by oxidation process of oxygen plasma were studied in acid-base surface value, zeta potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). And their mechanical interfacial properties of the carbon black/rubber composites were evaluated by the composite tearing energy ($G_{III}c$). As a result, it was found that the introduction rate of oxygen-containing polar functional groups, such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, lactone, and carbonyl groups, onto the carbon black surfaces was increased by increasing the plasma treatment time. It revealed that the polar rubber, such as acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), showed relatively a high degree of interaction with oxygen-containing functional groups of the carbon black surfaces, resulting in improving the tearing energy ($G_{III}c$) of the carbon black/acrlyonitrile butadiene rubber composites.
In this work, the effect of oxygen plasma treatment of nano-scaled silica on the mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the silica/rubber composites was investigated. The surface properties of the silica were studied in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angles. And, their mechanical interfacial properties and thermal stabilities of the composites were characterized by tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. As a result, it was found that the introduction rate of oxygen-containing polar functional groups onto the silica surfaces was increased by increasing the plasma treatment time, resulting in improving the tearing energy. Also, the thermal stabilities of the composites were increased by increasing the treatment time. These results could be explained that the polar rubber, such as acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), showed relatively a high degree of interaction with oxygen-containing functional groups of the silica surfaces in a compounding system.
