  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of shading and leaf mold treatment on growth characteristics and photosynthesis responses of Peucedanum japonicum in forest farming. It is very valuable as a sort of health food, so that the demand for the vegetable has increased recently. The experiment can not only increase the yield but also contribute to the development of eco-friendly technology for high-quality P. japonicum. It was performed by shading treatments (full sunlight, 35%, 50% and 75% shading) and leaf mold treatments (control, pine tree and chestnut tree). Height, stem diameter, root collar diameter, number of stem and dry weight were the highest in chestnut-leaf mold under full sunlight. Leaf area, leaf length and leaf width were the highest in chestnut-leaf mold under 35% shading. Photosynthetic rate, conductance to $H_2O$, transpiration rate and water use efficiency were the highest in chestnut-leaf mold under full sunlight. Specially, photosynthetic rate was higher under chestnut-leaf mold in all shading treatment, and getting lower in the higher shading rate. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, it is concluded that P. japonicum grows nicely by maintaining 35% shading under chestnutleaf mold in forest farming. Thus, it is the most effective way to increase the yield for high-quality P. japonicum with eco-friendly technology.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate suitable plantation site for planted Chamaecyparis obtusa seedlings from the analysis of regional early growth performances. Two years old C. obtusa seedlings were planted with the density of $3,900seedlings{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ in late March, 2011 at Haeman and Jangseong, Jeollanamdo. In each study site, three plots ($400m^2$ per plot) were established and root collar diameter (mm) and tree height (cm) of each C. obtusa were measured in April, 2011 and October from 2011 to 2013. We also analyzed soil physical and chemical properties of sites and compartmental nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of C. obtusa. Although the concentrations of soil nitrogen, organic matter, and C.E.C. at Haenam site were higher than those at Jangseong site, early growth performances of planted C. obtusa at Jangseong site were significantly better than those at Haenam site. The reasons for these results were probably related to deep available soil depth at Jangseong site and relatively low annual precipitation and sea wind at Haenam site, which was adjacent to the sea. The compartmental nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of C. obtusa was in the order of needles > current twigs > fine root > stem and branches root above 2 mm in diameter. The phosphorus concentration of needles at Haenam site was significantly higher than that at Jangseong site. The results of this study might be useful for the selection of suitable plantation site for C. obtusa.

  • This research aims at suggesting the mitigation measures of decreasing pollution by analyzing land cover characteristics according to subwatershed, and non-pollutant load characteristics occurring in each subwatershed. Mushim-cheon is selected as a research area, and HyGIS-SWAT is used as a water quality model. This research analyzed outflow load characteristics by classifying land cover, which has over 50% classified items, into a city area, a farmland area and a forest area. The result shows that the yearly occurrence load quantity represents a farmland area, a forest area and a city area in order. In subwatershed-2, occurrence load quantity is analyzed by setting up a buffer zone in the center of stream, and by changing a farmland area into a natural grass land. Therefore, a farmland area in a subwatershed changes 36.6% into 27.9% and 15.3% comparing to previous land cover change. In the analysis of sediment loads occurrence quantity and nutritive salt load occurrence quantity in subwatershed-2, sediment loads occurrence quantity decreases 52% to about 47%, and nutritive salt load decreases 49% and 34% in compare with previous change. Hereafter, this research will set up the mitigation measures scenario, and find out which is more effective for the mitigation measures.

  • The purpose of the study is to give ROI information about management status and investment returns to someone who will newly cultivate Rhus verniciflura and expand area of Rhus verniciflura cultivation. In this study, IRR (Internal Rate of Returns), B/C Ratio and NPV are applied for ROI analysis. We basically surveyed thirty household among Rhus verniciflura cultivation farmhouses in chief producing districts Won-ju in Gang- Won, Ok-Cheon in Chung-Buk, Ham-Yang in Gyeong-Nam in Korea from May until October in 2011. Hence, the research surveyed these farmers about production cost, management cost, input labors and materials, land price and etc. by working process to calculate production and operation cost. As the result of farm survey, the result of the analysis shows income rate 27.76%, B/C Ratio 2.5, and NPV 121,830,831 won in $16,500m^2$ with 10 years period when local price of Rhus verniciflura is 2,200,000 won/3.75 kg at locals with 3% discount rate is applied. Therefore, starting open field cultivation of Rhus verniciflura, which requires intensive labor or expanding the cultivation area needs more labor force.

  • Community and distribution of Coleoptera were investigated in 4 different regional areas (Danseoksan, Tohamsan, Namsanm and Daebon) of Kyeougju National Park from June 17, 1997 to Oct. 30, 1997 by sweeping net method. 565 individuals belonging to 139 species, 115 genera in 30 families were collected. Species diversity was much higher in the areas of Tohamsan and Danseoksan (0.716 and 0.762, respectively) than the other areas because of the good plantation for the leaf beetles. In the family Chrysomelidae, Tohamsan area revealed very high Simpson diversity index, a 0.916. On the other way, Simpson diversity index was 0 in Daebon area which had very simple plantation with beach side and pine trees. Chrysomelidae was the most abundant; 270 individuals belonging to 45 species of 34 genera. Among them, Mordellina brunneotincta Marseul was the highest frequency. And then, the species of Coccinellidae, Alleculidae, Cerambycidae, Attelabidae and Curculionidae were mostly abundant in all regional area. Stigmatium pilosellum Gorham, Mordellina brunneotincta Marseul and Rhaphirtropis guttifer Sharp were newly recorded in Korea.

  • Mountain disasters in Korea have caused massive social and economic damage. During the period 2005-2014 there has been an annual average of 7 deaths and disaster recovery costs of 79.8 billion won in the country's 4393 ha of mountainous areas. The primary mountain disasters are landslides on mountain slopes, and secondary debris flows can spread along mountain streams, damaging facilities and settlements in lower areas. Typhoons and local rainfall can cause such disasters, while anthropogenic factors include development that damages the mountainous terrain. The study area was divided into three basins. For each basin, a debris flow vulnerability assessment method was proposed considering FLO-2D analysis results and the local topography, geology, and forestation. To establish an in situ investigation, analysis, and evaluation plan for potential mountain disasters, we selected mountain basins that are potentially vulnerable to mountain disasters through analysis of their mountain slopes and streams. This work suggests the establishment of a comprehensive plan for disaster prevention based on a mountain basin feature.

  • The characteristics of concentrations and loads of Total Nitrogen(T-N), Total Phosphorus(T-P), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in mountain stream water were examined from September 2000 through August 2001. The 92.5-ha study watershed in Chungbuk Province consists of 59% mixed forest and 30% coniferous forest. Streamflow was measured and water samples were collected at about 10 day intervals for dry days and at 2-6 hour intervals for a storm event at the study watershed outlet. The mean concentration of COD in streamflow for rainy days was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than for dry days. The mean concentrations of T-N and T-P in vegetation growing season (May to October) were lower than those in vegetation dormant season (November to April). Low concentrations of pollutants during vegetation growing season are likely due to the heavy demand for nutrients by the vegetation and biological activity associated with a warming of soil. The ratios of pollutants loads during storm periods to annual pollutants loads were 87% for T-N, 83% for T-p, and 87% for COD. The unit loads of pollutants for study area were estimated at 5.9 kg/ha $\cdot$ yr for T-N, 0.15 kg/ha $\cdot$ yr for T-p, and 23.9 kg/ha $\cdot$ yr for COD. The removal efficiency of pollutants in study area were 24% for T-N, 58% for T-P and 66% for COD, indicating that a study area shows water purification function.

  • Sediment yield and sediment transport in a basin bring about decrease of conveyance by the change of bed section, and have an influence on an aggravation of water quality and freshwater ecosystem. This study is to analyze the characteristics of outflow sediment according to land-use in Mushim-cheon flowing through forest area, farmland area and urban area. The upper stream of Mushim-cheon consists of forest area and farmland area. The suspended sediment is observed through 10 rainfall events in 5 sites. As a result of analyzing characteristics of landuse, the site of Bangse-gyo takes up 69% of Mushim-cheon, and farmland area(27.1%) and forest area(63.7%) take up 90.8% in Bangse-gyo. Accordingly, these two areas have the high possibility to occur sediment. The suspended sediment of this site shows the highest concentration. Transferring to the downstream and the urban, the concentration of suspended sediment gets decreased. The suspended sediment occurred in the upper stream of Mushim-cheon prior to Bangse-gyo has an influence on the downstream, and has a slight influence on the urban area. Also relational formula about suspended sediemtn and discharge is leaded. As a result of this formula, $R^{2}$ is 0.506 in the upper stream and is 0.656 in the downstream.

  • Changes in land cover or land use, such as changes in forest area, can cause changes in water and energy circulation, ultimately affecting overall hydrological cycle including stream flow, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and base flow. In this study, the changes of the hydrological processes over the past long period were simulated by using large-scale surface hydrologic model along with various soil, land use, vegetation, and meteorological data. For this purpose, this study simulated and evaluated the changes in the hydrological cycle for the past 50 years (1955-2010) in East Asia including China, Japan and South Korea. In particular, this study used the land cover maps which can properly reflect the vegetation condition for each simulation period. As results, the mean runoff ratio of China was estimated to be 47.0% over the entiree period, 62.7% in Japan and 49.4% in South Korea. The mean soil moisture of China was estimated to be 22.2%, 35.6% in Japan and 23.9% in South Korea. Finally, the mean evapotranspiration rate was estimated to be 52.7% in China, 37.3% in Japan and 50.4% in South Korea. Especially, in China, the hydrological cycle was found to be changed very much for the entire simulation period. However, in Japan, the hydrological cycle was found to be very stable for the entire simulation period. The hydrological cycle was also found to become stable mainly due to the stabilization of the vegetation.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve forestland characteristic evaluation system's indicators for rational development and ecosystem conservation. There has been no consideration for statistical duplication between variables, and it caused inefficient data collection. Furthermore, the same evaluation criteria were applied for all forestlands without considering regionally different characteristics, and it made variation for designation cancel rates of preservation semi-preservation forestlands between cities. To solve these problems, we first removed 'DBH' variable which has a multicollinearity. Second, we applied standard normal distribution for each forest watershed type. As a result of eliminating 'DBH', the numbers of parcels for all grades except A were changed but their numbers and areas were not large enough to consider the change of total score. For the output of analyses with the existing same regional criteria, the total scores of urban type and urban-fringe type forestlands were higher than those of other types. The numbers of parcels for A and B were increased and those for C and E were decreased by applying standard normal distribution. This caused the increase of preservation-oriented parcels. Finally, we suggested a new evaluation method based on standard normal distribution to consider regional forest characteristics and to solve regional imbalance.
