  • This study was conducted to develop a new synthetic breed of Korean native chicken. The combining ability and reciprocal effects for production traits were estimated on 1,157 hens from a $5{\times}5$ diallel cross-mating design using grand parent stock (GPS) lines of Korean native chicken. Body weight, viability, age at first egg laying, egg weight, and hen-day egg production were measured and analyzed. The results showed that the general combining ability (GCA) of the survival rate during laying periods was -9.6 to 11.1, with the highest value obtained in the W strain. Additionally, the GCA of the body weight at 12 weeks was -209.7 to 162.2, with the highest value obtained in the F strain. The GCA for age at fist egg laying was estimated to be -2.8 to 3.7, while the GCA of egg weight was -0.91 to 0.96, and the GCA of hen-day egg production was -4.9 to 6.0. In the estimation of specific combining ability, the YW combination showed the highest survival rate, FW showed the highest body weight at 12 weeks, and GW showed the highest hen-day egg production. The reciprocal effects were significantly different among crosses for almost all productivity traits. In identical breeding combinations, differences in ability were observed when the maternal or paternal breeds were switched. The mean value based on combining ability was higher in WY, WF, and GW combinations for survival rate; GF, HG, and HF combinations for body weight at 12 weeks; and GW, YW, and FW combinations for hen-day egg production. It is concluded that the GF and HF combinations, which have excellent growth performance and moderate survival rate, are the most desirable paternal parent stock (PS) strains, and the GW and FW combinations, which have great laying performance and moderate body weight, are the most desirable maternal PS strains.

  • Following the Animal genetic resource for food and agriculture (AnGR) is considered as an independent resource for the possessing country, ensuring the sovereignty of AnGR is important. The present study investigated the growth and egg production performance of six breed enrolled in DAD-IS for the purpose of securing scientific data on AnGR in Korea. A total of 323 chickens (female 181, male 142) were used in this study, with the following six breeds: Korean Leghorn (LEG), Gyeongbuk Araucana (ARA), Korean native chicken (KNC), Korean Ogye (Ogye), Hyunindak (HIL), Heongseongyakdak (HYD). The body weight of male ARA from hatching to 32 weeks of age was the highest among the breeds, and LEG and Ogye were relatively lower (P<0.0001, excluded body weight data of HYD). The body weight of female ARA was the highest and HYD was significantly the lowest among the female chicken breeds (P<0.0001). The laying percentage was the highest in LEG and was the lowest in HYD among the breeds (P<0.0001). The average egg weight from 20 to 40 weeks of age was the highest in ARA, followed by LEG and was the lowest in Ogye (P<0.0001), and the adapted breed including LEG and ARA was higher than indigenous breed (P<0.05). Egg mass production was the highest in Korean Leghorn. Collectively, these results show that ARA has the best growth ability, and LEG has the best egg production performance among the used breeds. This suggests that the adapted breed with high commercial performance is important AnGR in Korea.

  • Data on egg production, egg weight and egg mass were obtained from a sample of the Synthetic White Leghorn population which was raised at Poultry Breeding Farm, Seoul National University. Egg mass was not measured directly, but was calculated from the egg numbers and the average egg weight for same period. Phenotypic means, components of variance and covariance, heritabilities and genetic correlations were computed. Egg mass was estimated to be a lowly heritable trait (0.204-0.270). High heritability estimates were found for age at sexual maturity and egg weight. Genetic correlation estimates were high and positive between egg mass and egg number(combined estimates 0.711). Egg mass and egg weight were moderately correlated genetically (0.431). Genetic correlation estimates was -0.280 between egg number and age at sexual maturity, but was 0.524 between egg weight and age at sexual maturity. Results show that selection for total egg mass based on record from a single period will not be satisfactory unless the single period chosen is one in the latter part of the laying year.

  • This study was conducted to provide a guideline for laying hens breeding through comparing performance test results and domestic and foreign breeding processing for the purpose of succeeding in laying hen industry. The annual average egg numbers were 120 at 1930, 135 at 1940 and 175 at 1950 which was 146% increase during a decade. Heterosis was firstly introduced at 1924 and was applied to produce commercial stock since 1950. The theory of selection for quantitative traits was established by Lerner in 1951. In Europe and America, the annual average egg numbers in performance test were 175, 213, 219 and 277 in 1950, 1960, 1970 and 1985, respectively, and in Korea, those were 196, 226 and 265 in 1960, 1970 and 1980, respectively Laying hen breeding through simultaneous selection of numerous traits may provoke elevation of viability, improvement of feed efficiency, alongation of laying period and increase of disease resistance.
