  • Visualization techniques are transformed into reliable representations through socio-technological processes which include the agreement on the instrument and the embodiment of practices in relevant scientific communities. Visual representations thus produced are justified by realistic and epistemic virtues in science. This paper analyzes different visual images presented in the scientific papers of two research groups who argue different theories about the mechanism of face perception. These two scientific groups use the same fMRI technology; yet, different experimental paradigms and visual stimuli change their hypotheses into distinct testable theories, which in turn lead to different evidences to support their own theories. Visual evidences are intermediate representations which lie between fMRI brain images and scientific theories, and theoretical models obtain the scientific value based on the consistency in the chain of visual representations. This study shows that representations in science tend to be good representations within the context of scientific communities. It will provide a chance to think of the value and limit of the scientific knowledge

  • Hannam-dong, which lies at the eastern part of Yongsan-gu in metropolitan Seoul has been known as one of the affluent area, but actually it is divided into different sub-areas including poor ones. Although it used to be a quiet residential neighborhood, be they rich or poor, some streets (gil) have become the places of creative economy since the late 2000s. The place-making of Hannam-dong is accompanied by taking-place of different creative classes in different sub-areas, and there have emerged contestation, negotiation and clash among them at the contact zone. While the big companies such as Samsung explores their own version of cultural/creative entrepreneurialism in one sub-area, the actors that can be dubbed as 'creative small producer' and/or 'creative underlass' produce Hangangjin-gil and Usadan-gil as artistic-cum-economic communities by deploying cultural capital. All in all, Hannam-dong is an interesting case that different types of gentrifications are produced by different actors in different sub-areas, which results in producing another kind of 'community of strangers' where different (creative) classes share a physical location, but do not have lasting social interactions and communicative networks.

  • This study is planned to discover the behavior of Korean peasants cope with the changes of structure last 30 years. So, I have surveyed the activists of Jindo Peasants Association through questionnaire. The outcome of survey are as follows; First, Peasants movement have been become weakened and the hope of future have disappeared. Although they have resisted the pressure of structural changes zealously, their life conditions have worsened. So, Peasants movement have been become weakened and they have no alternative choice. Second, The economic situations of all activist those who surveyed have worsened and there is no exits. If looking only at the surface of things, the socio-economic situations of Jindo peasants activists show a tendency to polarization. But, to tell the truth, overall immiseration have occurred at Jindo area. Third, confusion of their sense of values and weakening of self-esteem have occurred among the Jindo peasants activists. It is because that farming which is evaluated high in respect to cultural and industrial perspective, have been eliminated and disregarded. Especially, worsening of earnings and expenses make the peasants to be in the worse situations.

  • Unlike general public investment projects, when it comes to environmental public investment projects, there is a gap between those who pay the costs, and those who receive the benefits. This is because of the long term nature of environmental investments, which entails that the majority of the costs are paid by the current generation, while the benefits are reaped by future generations. Because of this, when the social discount rate is set at a standard, singular rate, an issue of relative underestimation of the benefits reaped by future generations may occur during the analytic process. This paper begins with the recognition of this problem, and attempts to estimate a suitable social discount rate that can be applied to environmental investment projects. Taking into account recent economic situations, the social discount rate is currently being estimated at between 2.9 ~ 4.9%. Also, this paper used preliminary feasibility studies that took place so far, to analyze the standard pattern of benefit generation. This revealed that alterations in social discount rates can bring significant changes in economic feasibility test results. Simulation results showed that roughly 6% of B/C ratios could be increased by 1%p. resulting in a decrease in social discount rates. Also if we use hyperbolic discount rates, instead of using the current singular rate, there would be a meaningful increase in the benefits for the future generation.

  • This study aims to discover an effect of conflicts between work-family family-work of hotel employees on their emotional exhaustion through an empirical analysis, and to propose relevant implications. Also, the study tried to identify which role a responsive strategy may play as a moderating variable from among such influential factors. In consideration of the sales and the number of rooms at hotels as of 2010, the study conducted survey research about seven hotels located in Seoul, and carried out research with 298 copies of effective samples. In order to confirm the effect of work-family family-work on emotional exhaustion, the study undertook a multiple regression analysis and performed a moderated regression analysis for confirming the moderation effect of a responsive strategy. As a result, only the conflicts between one's work and a family had a significant effect on emotional exhaustion, and a problem-oriented responsive strategy demonstrated a moderation effect of the conflicts between work-family family-work and emotional exhaustion. In this regard, hotels should be prepared with a system which enables hotel chefs to be more faithful to both their families and household affairs through the reasonable operation of workload or an instructive system at work, and it would be possible to deal with the symptom of emotional exhaustion by conflict management through a rational analysis of the cause of conflict, if any, as well as through an alternative to such a conflict.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the importance and performance of the educational laboratory facilities for culinary practice. The questionnaire was distributed to 100 students enrolled in the culinary arts department at Y University located in Chung-buk province, and a total of 71 usable, completed questionnaires were received for the research. Collected data was statistically analyzed using the SPSS 10.0 Windows version, and the IPA(Importance-Performance Analysis) was conducted to compare importance and satisfaction from kitchen laboratory facilities which have been a key element of culinary education. Results of this study can be summarized as follows. Firstly, it was found that performance (M=3.42) for culinary practice facilities was lower than importance(M=4.09) for culinary practice facilities. Secondly, through IPA, the importance and satisfaction of culinary laboratory elements showed some differences between the students who had have some educational experience in culinary art prior to enrollmnet and those who had not. The former students attached importance to the usefulness of facilities rather than the size of facilities. And as rapidly improved factors, they answered ventilation and water supply facilities for culinary laboratories. The application of this study in physical environment of culinary education will contribute to improve students` satisfaction with the quality of education. However, the critical point of this study is a limited sampling, so the results of this study cannot be generalized.

  • Vegetational data obtained from 24 quadrats of Mt. Paekdu area were analysed by applying two multivariate methods : two-way indicator species analysis(TWIMSPAN) for classification and detrended canonical correspondence analysis(DCCA) for ordination. DCCA technique allowed to extract the ordination axes that could be related to 9 environmental factors. The dominant tree species distributed in the region between 1,700-1,950m from sea level were Betula ermanii, Larix olgensis, Abies nephrolepis, and Picea jezoensis in descending order. The dominant tree species distributed in the region between 1.300-1.500m were Abies nephrolepis, Pinus koraiensis, Larix olgensis, Betula mandshurica, and Picea jezoensis in descending order. The available phosphorus content in forest soil ranged from 7 to 1.153ppm. The distribution of the major communities showed a close relationship with elevation gradient. From high to low elevation, the communities of Alnus fruticosa var. mandshurica, Betula ermanii, Larix olgensis, Abies nephrolepis, Picea jezoensis, Pinus koraiensis, and Quercus mongolica were found in descending order. At the communities where Betula ermanii was dominant, Betula ermanii forest was distributed in the high elevation area, Betula ermanii-Larix olgensis forest in the good nutrition of organic matter and $K^+$, and Abies nephrolepis forest in the good nutrition of $Mg^{{+}{+}}$ and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$. The most dominant factor influencing community distribution was elevation.

  • Although market orientation as the implementation of the marketing concept has long been a major subject in marketing, firms with market orientation do not necessarily come with high performance, showing mixed results in literature. There have been attempts to link market orientation-firm performance until recently with different mediators, but the appreciation on market orientation has been faded in practice. This study focuses on two possibilities for the causes of these problems. 1) Previous studies have overlooked the qualitative aspects of market orientation, 2) have focused on the performance at corporate level. To provide a generalized performance-generation framework, this study demonstrates the market information quality as a moderating variable and introduces the task performance of employees as a universal mediator between market orientation and the firm performance. As the result of this study, we confirmed the positive role of the market information quality and employees' task performance in market orientation-Firm Performance. The relationship between market orientation and employee's task performance becomes stronger when market information quality is high in value. We highlighted the performance generating mechanism of market orientation, regardless of context. This research provides new insights for marketing scholars and managers with regard to both activities and quality of market information and how market orientation affects individual and firm level performance.
