이 연구는 도시공간의 어메니티를 실현하기 위한 수단으로서 사운드스케이프(soundscape)에 관한 연구조사의 결과를 소개한다. 사운드스케이프 및 사운드스케이프 디자인에 관한 개념과 사상을 고찰하고, 남원시의 사운드스케이프 조사를 예로 하여 지역에 있어서 음, 인간 및 환경과의 관계로부터 사운드 어메니티(sound amenity)를 실현하는데 있어서 음이 갖는 의미와 역할을 모색한다. 사운드스케이프 조사방법으로써 문헌조사, 필드조사 및 설문조사를 이용하여 남원지역의 음풍경을 조사${\cdot}$분석하고, 그 시대적, 계절적, 시간적인 음풍경의 변화와 현상, 그리고 지역주민의 음에 관한 인식특성을 파악한다. 조사결과, 지역에 있어서 자연환경을 보존하고 축제등의 전통적인 생활문화를 계승하는 것은 지역의 사운드스케이프와 어메니티 형성에 중요한 역할을 한다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 또한 도시공간의 사운드스케이프 연구는 이러한 일련의 조사연구활동 및 교육활동 등을 포함한 다양한 활동과 여러 영역에서의 유기적인 교류활동이 이루어져야 쾌적한 음환경 창조가 가능하다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.

Soundscapes have the potential to help people experience the historical background and cultural traditions by the scenery of a local area and to be used as a cultural and tourism resource. This concept was first explained in detail by M. Schafer and has been developed as a new way of experiencing landscapes using various senses. This research studied the soundscape of Kyodong Island, the so-called "Island of Peace" and designed new cultural acoustic content for education and tourism. Kyodong Island is located right below the Northern Limit Line and the whole island is in the Civilian Controlled Area. The political and economic status of the island has been changed dynamically by the Korean War and the division of the country. These days, the island needs to realize the vision of the "Island of Peace" in a more creative way using local resources, including its "cold war landscape" and the natural scenery of the region. This research applied the concept of a soundscape to document the island, and to reproduce it in an artistic way. A workshop was conducted to learn concepts and techniques of soundscapes with a sound artist. Listening, recording, conducting interviews, and literature research was used to study the soundscape of the island. After that, this research reconstructed the soundscape of the island through a soundscape composition. The main theme of the composition story was the "Hope and Wish for the Harmony and Peace" to show the vision of the "Island of Peace". The initial sub-theme for the introduction part was "First Encounter with Kyodong Island" arranging the representative soundscape, which could be the first impression of the region. The second sub-theme was "War and Tension" using several soundscapes as a metaphor for the tragedy of the Korean War. The third sub-theme was "Everyday Life of Kyodong Island" which described the energy of the present day, after the wounds of the war have healed. The final sub-theme was "Harmony and Peace" using traditional music and keynote sounds of the region as a reminder of the peaceful past, before the war. The recording files were documented as two types of sound maps. One was a two-dimensional map to show the soundscapes from one point of view, and the other used the online application called "Sound Around You". The final artwork was displayed at an exhibition and uploaded on YouTube to be shared publicly. Through this project, we discovered the potential of soundscapes as a medium to preserve the history and local identity, as well as presenting a new vision. The artwork will be exhibited at historically and culturally meaningful places on the Island to utilize the underused places as local tourist attractions and educational resources.

It is very difficult to reduce ambient noise level in the downtown. The best method is to improve the sound amenity of the districts, considering concept of soundscape. This study aims to survey the effect of introducing sound and masking to reduce the background noise level. We carried out the evaluating test for 18 introducing sounds varied S/N ratio(-5, 0, +5) in the city riverside. In these test, subjects evaluated the sound environment with five bipolar adjective scales. It was evaluated that introducing sounds improved the sound environment, and that S/N +5 dB was very appropriate to mask the background noise. But the hearing level was suggested to be S/N 0 dB or less.

The assessment of an urban site depends on the way it responds to multiple needs such as functionality, aesthetic and complex comfort of acoustic, thermal, lighting and air quality This study aims to investigate the assessment of various urban soundscapes in the sense of acoustic amenity by the questionnaires. As a result, acoustic amenity assessment was influenced by the non-acoustic factors such as environment assessment of visual, thermal, air quality etc.. And it was shown that the subjects tend to perceive the noise level less than 3$\sim$10dB L$_{Aeq}$ under the similar noise exposure level according to the urban landscapes.

This study was focused on the influence of soundscape provided to the interior landscape on the improvement of occupants' sound environment. When soundscape was provided to occupants together with the interior landscape rather than simply providing interior landscape, the occupants' satisfaction seemed to be improved. The most preferred sound source among the three sound sources was considered as the sound of the grasshopper. When both of the interior landscape and the landscape substances was provided, the adjectives with the average difference of more than 1 are "Vicissitudinous", "Elegant" and "Cheerful". When the interior landscape and the sound source were provided, such adjectives as "Vicissitudinous", "Complex" and "Cheerful" are extracted. When all the variables were provided, such adjectives as "Vicissitudinous", "Abundant" and "Cheerful" seem to show the difference of more than 1. Regarding "Vicissitudinous", it was possible to know that the average difference of more than 1.5 was the biggest. Regarding the relative values of the ${\alpha}$ wave and the ${\beta}$ wave for each part, it seemed that the highest ${\alpha}$ wave was generated on the left parietal lobe of P3, while the lowest ${\beta}$ wave was generated on the left and right frontal lobes of Fp1 and Fp2. According to this study, it was shown that the soundscape and the interior landscape seemed to influence the improvement of the occupants' sound environment.

The soundscape is a novel attempt to offer comfortable sound environments at the urban public spaces by adding pleasant sounds and removing unagreeable ones. Most important factors to be considered therein are to determine what kind of sounds to offer and how to adjust them to the changing circumstances. But, installing, maintaining and adjusting the soundscape system directly in the field will ensue numerous problems as well as high costs. Thus, it is essential to devise a test method to analyse and verify the outcome before the actual installation in the field takes place. This study aims at devising the instrument system that enables to control. with a great ease, numerous variables. reproduce most agreeable sound sources, and can verify the effects on the virtual simulatory settings, which is named as Virtual Acoustic Field Simulation System (VAFSS).

This study is to make good acoustic environment around Gwang-ju riverside and performed survey and measurement of soundscape. The survey was focused on the types of sound producing. The results of measurement and analysis are as follows: 1) The types of sound at reverside were twenty and the Leq(equivalent noise level) was ranging from 50 dB(A) to 76 dB(A). The dominant sound was road traffic noise. 2) In the upperstream and the downstream, the sound of wind, bird and water was observed. 3) In the inner city, the water sound was produced by the difference of the height of the weir to mask the road traffic noise.

Soundscape design is applied for the purpose of expressing the characteristics of places, by supplying suitable background sound for various places expressing their identity. Bus stations are a place for aggregating people using transportation. That is, people go into a station, buy a ticket, and wait for departure or for other passengers. Therefore, they need to create a more comfortable sound environment. This study aims to make bus stations a comfortable place acoustically for users. In this study, analysis on behavior at various locations in the space was performed. Measurements were taken on the approaching path, waiting place, departure and arrival platforms for sound levels and frequency characteristics. In addition, on acoustic specialists evaluation, using questionnaires, was also performed ambient noise, information broadcasting and users dialogue.

This study is an experimental study to introduce the soundscape design for urban parks. subjective response to soundscape for 4 urban park are carried out using 7 scale S.D. method which are included 25 adjective pairs. In order to recognized the effect environmental sound(bird singing, sweet environmental music, nature sound) for enriching the present sondscape, this study analyse the subject response for soundscape after and before using the environmental sound. The degree of satisfaction for visual atmosphere is higher than for auditory atmosphere of parks, this means that visual clues are much more effective to the environment condition than auditory clues. The effect of using the environmental sound is positive and effective to enrich the soundscape. On providing environmental sounds, it is necessary to consider the charcteristics of urban parks.

The purpose of this study is to interpret the evaluation structure of auditory images about streetscapes in urban area on the basis of the semantic view of soundscapes. Using the caption evaluation method. which is a new method, from 2001 to 2005, a total of 45 college students participated in a fieldwork to find out the images of sounds while walking on the main streets of Namwon city. It was able get various data which include elements, features, impressions, and preferences about auditory scene. In Namwon city, the elements of the formation of auditory images are classified into natural sound and artificial sound which include machinery sounds, community sounds. and signal sounds. Also, the features of the auditory scene are classified by kind of sound, behavior, condition, character, relationship of circumference and image. Finally, the impression of auditory scene is classified into three categories, which are the emotions of humans, atmosphere of the streets, and the characteristics of the sound itself. From the relationship between auditory scene and estimation, the elements, features and impressions of auditory scene consist of the items which are positive, neutral, and negative images. Also, it was able to grasp the characteristics of auditory image of place or space through the evaluation model of streetscapes in Namwon city.
