In general, slope failures are occurred by the interaction among various factors(slope shape, hydraulic condition, and geologic condition, etc.). Hydraulic condition was a very important factor of a stability in cut slope and a dangerous of road passing. In this study, two cut-slope case on prescription of spring out water present. And this study data is used at practical affairs.
In the study, we carried out a 3-D analysis to assess the influence of groundwater level changes on the slope stability, conducting a series of back-numerical analysis to delineate the critical line of the shear strength of the failure surface of a landslide, and a laboratory test to determine the geo-mechanical properties of soil samples. The analysis result shows that the shear strength determined by the laboratory test was distributed below the critical line of shear strength estimated by back-analysis. Differences between driving and resisting force were also analyzed in groundwater conditions of dry and saturation. It appeared that the stress gets greater towards the slope center of the landslide, and the debris mass moves downwards. According to the analysis, the factor of safety becomes 1 with the rise of foundwater level up to -0.85 m from the slope surface, while the slope tends to stay stable during dry seasons.

Generally, when the stability of the geosynthetic reinforced soil slopes is analyzed, the required tensile forces of each reinforcement layers are calculated from total reinforcement forces which are necessary to retain the equilibrium state of slip mass in which the slip surfaces are assumed to be a linear or bilinear. It is assumed that the reinforcement forces are increased or constant with depth. However, according to the instrumented field data and laboratory model test results, the maximum tensile strain of reinforcement in a reinforced soil slope is developed in a certain elevation, not a bottom of the slope. In the concept of reinforced soil, postulated failure surfaces are the traces of the position in which the reinforcement tensile forces are maximum in the layer, and the reinforcement tensile forces are related to the stress state on the postulated failure surface. Therefore, in this study, based on the distribution of normal stress on the slip surface, a new method for the evaluation of required tensile forces is suggested and a number of the instrumented field data are analyzed by newly suggested method. As a result, it is shown that the newly suggested method produces relatively accurate reinforcement tension forces.

Infiltration and the rising level of groundwater caused by rainfall are a major cause of the landslide and sliding. In order to secure the safety factor of slope, the slope stabilization and reinforcement works are used to enhance consistency. Nailing, Slope Drainage method and the surface vegetation measures can be simultaneously applied in the Mass Nail method, which is also environmental friendly reinforcement method. To demonstrate the reinforcement effect of a strengthened slope by Mass Nail, the changes in water contents by rainfall were considered while performing Scale Model Test. As a result, safety factor of reinforced slope was about 1.4~2.3 times increased on the unstrength slope. In the case of increasing water content 10% to 22%, The maximum stress was reduced to 12%~24% at the average rate of 18% on the unstrength slope and the reinforced slope by the Mass Nail Method was reduced to 4%~23% at the average rate of 14%.
It has been reported that the failure of a slope in weathered soils or rocks induced by intensive rainfall occurs mainly within 2.0m below the ground surface, and that the effect of rainfall on the rise of the ground water level is not significant if the ground water level inside the slope is not so high before rainfall. Most slopes in Korea, however, have been examined to rather fail at the deeper part since they are usually designed on the basis of assumption that the ground water level rises up to the surface when raining. In this study, the rise of ground water level and slope stability were examined in order to verify the appropriateness of the current ground water level condition that has a significant effect on slope stability using the average daily rainfall in Seoul for the last 30 years. The result showed that the ground water level appears to rise up to 6.0~41.0% of the slope height respectively, and therefore the currently applied condition of ground water level may be somewhat overestimated.
The paper presents a reliability-based method that can capture the impact of uncertainty of seismic loadings. The proposed method incorporates probabilistic concepts into the classical limit equilibrium and the Newmark-type deformation techniques. The risk of damage is then computed by Monte Carlo simulation. Random process and RMS hazard method are introduced to produce seismic motions and also to use them in the seismic slope analyses. The geotechnical variability and sampling errors are also considered. The results of reliability analyses indicate that in a highly seismically active region, characterization of earthquake hazard is the more critical factor, and characterization of soil properties has a relatively small effect on the computed risk of slope failure and excessive slope deformations. The results can be applicable to both circular and non-circular slip surface failure modes.
A calcareous rock slope failed during excavation of the slope for construction of a tunnel entrance. The slope is located at the construction site for widening highway in Yeongwol, Korea. Field surveys, laboratory tests, and numerical analyses were performed to determine the reason for the slope failure. The numerical analysis revealed that the safety factor of the slope before construction of the entrance was less than 1, and that this decreased after construction. After construction of the entrance, the sliding zone of the slope increased and slope stability decreased because the shear strain and plastic zone in the slope over the tunnel entrance showed an increase relative to the lower part of the slope. To enhance the stability of the slope for construction of the tunnel entrance, countermeasures such as rock bolts, rock anchors, and FRP (Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic) grouting were adopted in light of the field conditions. Serial field monitoring performed to confirm the reinforcing effects of the adopted countermeasures revealed a small amount of horizontal deformation of the slope soils, most of the elastic deformation that can regain its former value. In addition, the axial forces of the rock bolt and anchor were more strongly affected by slope excavation during construction of the tunnel entrance than by tunnel excavation or the rainy season, and the axial forces tended to converge after excavation of the tunnel. Therefore, we can confirm that the slope is currently safe.
The slope stabilization analysis was performed by conducting survey and selecting the representative section in order to improve slope composition and management technology of masonry embankments in the quarry area, The mean slope of the masonry retain wall (A, B, C, D, E, F) was $38.5^{\circ}$, although the steep slope of the lowest slope (A) as $59^{\circ}$. The horizontal distance of the masonry embankments is 66.2 m and the slope height is 48.3 m. However, the inclination of the masonry embankments is relatively steep and visually unstable. The slope stability analysis for the slope stability analysis was taken into account during the drying and saturation. The slope stability analysis during saturation was performed by modeling the fully saturated slope. The strength constants of the ground were divided into two groups. The safety factor for dry period was 1.850 and the safety factor for rainy season was 1.333. The safety rate of dry period and rainy season was above 1.5 and 1.2. However, the weathered granite on the upper part of the masonry embankments at the time of heavy rainfall is considered to have a high risk of slope erosion and collapse. Therefore, it is considered necessary to take measures for stabilization through appropriate maintenance such as drainage installation.

The target slope of this study, formed during the construction of highway, is the very high infinite slope where sliding began along the discontinuity. Although an attempt was made to stabilize the upper part of the slope by installing the rock anchors, large scale failure was occurred at the lower part if the reinforced area. Afterwards, subsequent failures were observed two times. To investigate the cause of the failure, residual shear strength was measured by performing the direct shear test of rock specimen of the site. The anchor design was based on the pull-out test. Considering the slope surface where the undulation was severe and the variation of strength was very large, buttressing was used to obtain the required anchoring capacity.
