  • Recently, the number of tunnels on national roads has been increased due to the trend that construction of the large-scaled cut slopes is limited because of the environmental issues. Therefore, the slope failures of tunnel portal have often occurred. The tunnel portal in use has limitations on selection of the countermeasure and construction against slope failure. In the cases of Suanbo hot springs 1 and 2 tunnel portals, seedding was chosen and constructed as the countermeasureof slope failure when the tunnel was first built but collapsed in April, 2002. In this study, the failure sites were examined accurately through the site investigation and an efficient countermeasure according to stability analysis is presented. It is shown that it is very efficient to use resloping for Suanbo hot springs 1 tunnel and concrete buttress, rock anchor to reinforcement countermeasure, and attached rockfall prevention net by dividing the site into 3 sections for Suanbo hot springs 2 tunnel.

  • This study analyzed the collapse course of a mud stone cut slope during the construction of a express and suggested a countermeasure. Experiments were carried out on bedrock mudstone to investigate the engineering characteristics and the slope stability analysis at the time the design was reviewed. In addition, stability analysis, considering the strength softening characteristics of the slope due to the Swelling-Slaking phenomenon, was also performed. As a result of the Swelling-Slaking test, the slake durability was Low-Medium, and the swell potential was Very Low. A review of the stability analysis performed at the time of the design showed different results from the actual results because LEM analysis had been performed without considering the engineering characteristics of mudstone. As a result of additional stability analysis considering the strength softening characteristics, the slope collapse point and the maximum shear strain point of the stability analysis were the same and the standard safety factor was not satisfied. As a countermeasure, a slope mitigation method was found to be most appropriate. The mitigation slope was calculated by Finite element Analysis. A comparison with BIPS to determine the applicability of a mitigation slope revealed most of the unconsolidated mudstone.

  • The neccessity of hillside land reclamation for food production in Korea is no matter of question. Accordingly, the Government has launched some large scale hillside land reclamation projects. From the past experiences followings are pointed out as to the rational hillside land reclamation engineering methodologies. 1. It is observed that due to the shortages in labor and high wage, the machanization in hillside land reclamation will be an urgent subject. 2. There are several engineering methods for the reclamation of hillside lands; contour terracing, improved contour terracing, bench terracing and sloping bench terracing. 3. Selection of suitable methods will demand the considerations on the topography, particularly degree of slope, and the land use after reclamation. For ordinary crops cultivation, slope should be low and contour terracing is to be recommended, to enable the introduction of machines. In case of grass land development, after smoothing the land surface, improved contour terracing might be selected. And for the orchard development, sloping bench terracing with the construction of roads between the terrace will be suitable.

  • The study area is a slope in Dogye-eup, Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do. The cutting method was applied to this slope for stabilization in 2009 due to the influence of the waste-rock dump located at the top of slope. Recently, soil cracks and creep have occurred on this slope, and the drainage channel was damaged. Therefore, it was analyzed the topography change through photogrammetry using a UAV. Orthophotos were taken in April and October 2019 respectively. From the Orthophots, Digital Surface Model (DSM) was extracted. Time series analysis was performed by comparing each DSM. The topography of October was pushed forward while maintaining the topography of April. Through these features, it is judged that the soil creep is occurring in this study area.
