  • New orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.) variety named as 'Kordi' was developed by the National Livestock Research Institute(NLRI) in 2003. Five superior clones on selected to develope the new variety of orchardgrass, and polycrossed for synthetic seed production. Synthetic seeds were examined on the agronomic growth characteristics and forage production at Suwon from 1995 to 1998, and regional trials were conducted in Suwon, Pyungchang and Jeju from 2001 to 2003 and Icsan in 2003, respectively. 'Kordi' showed semi-erect growth habit in fall and spring, and long type in length of flag leaf and short in upper internode. Plant height of 'Kordi' was little short compared to that of standard variety, Ambassador, and heading date was delayed about 3 days as 14th May compared to Ambassador. Characters such as winter hardiness. lodging tolerance, regrowth, disease resistance of 'Kordi' were stronger or better than those of Ambassador. 'Kordi' showed $10\%$ higher dry matter yield as 15,174 kg/ha compared to Ambassador. Nutritive value was appeared to be similar in both varieties.

  • Sixteen cultivars of corn(Zea mays L.) hybrids have been recommended as the government recommended corn hybrids since 1984, however, their forage performances have been mostly tested at two locations, such as Suweon and Sunghwan in the Middle parts of Korea. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to retest the agronomic characteristics and yield of eleven of sixteen government recommended corn hybrids at five scattered locations, such as Icheon, Suweon, Sunghwan, Keonpan and Kwangju in 1993 and 1995 with the intention of improving recommendations to dairy farmers. Among the corn hybrids tested, 'Suweon 19' was susceptible to foliar diseases and poor stay green at all locations in 1993 and 1995. Generally, all hybrids have less lodging and infection rate of rice black streaked dwarf virus(RBSDV) varied by location but mostly not exceed 10%. Infection rate at Sunghwan and Kwangju among locations was the highest as 13.5 and 15.3% respectively. Among the corn hybrids tested, 'Suweon 19' was the highest RBSDV infection rate, but that of 'Kwanganok' and '3282' was lower than other hybrids. At all locations, '3352' and '3394' were the earliest in growth stage, but 'Kwanganok', '3282', 'DK729', 'G4624' and 'DK713' were the latest among the corn hybrids. Ear percentage in total DM of '3352', '3394' and 'G4624' was higher than other hybrids, but that of 'DK713' was the lowest among the corn hybrids. '3352' and '3394' showed the most suitable DM content for silage production at harvest. Among the corn hybrids tested, 'Suweon 19' and '3282' were the lowest DM yield at all locations in 1993 and 1995, but the highest DM yield varied by location. At Icheon, '3144W' and 'G4743', at Suweon, '3352' and '3144W, at Sunghwan, 'DK729' and '3144W', at Keongsan, '3352' and 'DK729', and at Kwangju, '3352' and 'DK689' were the highest DM yield in 1993 and 1995, respectively. Then, '3394' was higher than other hybrids at all locations in 1995. The government recommended corn hybrids tested were generally adapted across the country. However, in forage production situations where wrn should be harvested before the rainy season in late summer, earlymedium maturing corn hybrids, '3352' and '3394' might be preferred.

Plant height of “Jangbeol 101” was short compared to that of standard variety, “Ambassador” and heading date was delayed about 2 days as 14th May compared to Ambassador. Characters such as winter hardiness, regrowth, moisture tolerance, disease resistance of “Jangbeol 101” were stronger or better than those of Ambassador. “Jangbeol 101” showed 9% higher dry matter yield as 12,374 kg/ha compared to Amabassador. Nutritive value was appeared to be similar in both varieties.

  • This study was conducted to investigate 106 grassland farms in six provinces including Chungcheongbuk-do, Gangwon-do, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeju-do, and Jeollanam-do to present their problems and causes by surveying the actual state of grassland farms during three years(2014~2016). The grassland survey was divided into three categories; used as the perennial grasses and annual forage crops (Complied with Grassland Act), not used as the perennial grasses and annual forage crops (Not complied with Grassland Act) and failed to meet the farmer and some items are missing or inaccurate (Insufficient contents). Among the surveyed grassland farm, 68 farms (64.2 %) were complied with Grassland Act but 30 farms (28.3 %) were not complied with Grassland Act. Especially, the 8 farms (26.7 %) not complied with Grassland Act used the grassland as other purposes such as tree growing, golf club and swine farm etc.. Therefore, strict on-site investigation by local governments is required to prevent the grassland from being used by illegal purposes. And there's a strong likelihood that 5 farms (62.5 %) avoided the survey violate the positive law. Grassland grades used by the local administrative agencies were not influenced by the factors affecting the yield (existence and non-existence of overseeding and fertilization by grassland grade, soil pH and organic matter content). This results suggest that there is a fundamental problem on the current grassland grade system based on the yield and the irregular time of investigation and lack of on-site investigation are another causes for inaccurate grassland grade. Therefore, the new method evaluating grassland grades which is not based on yield and the thorough on-site investigation by local administrative agencies are necessary when the grassland grade is evaluated.
