  • This study was conducted to observe some characteristics of aneuploid trees obtained from the crosses between diploid and triploid in the first experiment. The results showed that the difference among the percentage of aneuploid's pollen grain germination was large, and all of them were lower than that of diploid 'Hongro' (82.4%). The average weight and size of each aneuploid's fruit was far lighter and smaller than that of diploid 'Hongro'. According to the width and length, all of the fruits shape was flat or short-globose conical shape except for JF3942. Almost all the aneuploid had higher sugar content than 'Hongro', nearly half of aneuploid fruits were firmer than that of diploid 'Hongro'. As for the acid contents of aneuploid fruits, the results were greatly different from those of previous studies on diploid apples, in present study the citric acid and tartaric acid contents were more than the malic acid which are dominant acid in most cultivars of apples. Both the length and width of aneuploid tree were shorter than that of diploid 'Hongro'. Most aneuploid trees' height was longer than width, but there were 4 exceptions. The size of leaves was smaller than that of diploid 'Hongro' according to the length and width of leaves measured. In all, aneuploid's vegetative growth is not as vigorous as diploid.

  • Fruit rot and blister canker, a disease of apple occurring severely in Korea has been studied for correct identification of the syndrome In fruit and apple trees. Among the fungi isolated from blister cankers, rough barks or fruits showing rotting of 7 different host species were Botryosphaeria berengeriana (pycnidial stage. Dethiorella mali), Penicillium expansum and Alternaria sp. from apple rots and Phomopsis sp. from pear fruit rots. The most dominant isolates were B. berengeriana. Ten isolates of D. mali were grouped in to two conidial types based up mycelial growth rate, growth habits and mycelial coloration on PDA. None of 10 isolates was chromogenic. Pycnidia in apple stems, stromatic, dark brown, globose or subglobose and the measuring were $103.5-287.5{\mu}\times92.0-287.5\mu$. The pycnidia contained hyaline, nonseptate, fusiform conidia. The sizes of pycnidiospore of isolates obtained from apple twig were $4.3-7.2{\mu}\times20.0-31.5{\mu}(average\;5.9\times25.4\mu)$. Some conidia of this fungus from apple, pear, peach and ornamental cherry showed 1-,2-,3-septate before or during germination. Microconidia were observed in pycnidia on PDA and fruit lesion of inoculated host. Symptoms on leaves and fruits were contoured brown spots when inoculated. Wart-like protuberance were formed on the surface of apple and pear. Canker appeared on branches of peach and ornamental cherry inoculated.

  • This study was conducted to find out influence of dormancy level and carbon concentration on freezing hardiness in bourse shoot of 'Fuji' apple tree. Bourse shoot of 'Fuji' adult apple tree grafted on M.26 and M.9 rootstocks were used as experimental materials. Dormancy levels of bourse shoot were categorized according to the periods as follows the internal dormancy (late January), the early days after internal dormancy breaking (early February), the late days after internal dormancy breaking (late February), the bud break (late March), and the full bloom (late April). Chilling temperatures with bourse shoot were ranged from 0 to $-40^{\circ}C$. Also, the freezing hardiness according to carbon concentrations were investigated on 'Fuji'/M.9 apple tree that defoliated severely by Marssonina blotch (defoliation) and that of below the average 20 cm in shoot length through heavy crop load (weakness). Results showed that freezing hardiness of bourse shoot may become weaker after internal dormancy breaking. There was no differences in the carbon concentration of bourse shoot of 'Fuji' apple tree grafted on M.9 and M.26, so may be resulted in no difference in freezing hardiness both of bourse shoot grafted on M.9 and M.26 rootstock. Carbon concentration in bourse shoots with weakness and C/N ratio in bourse shoots with defoliation were lower than that of healthy. It may be shown that the freezing hardiness of defoliation and weakness were weaker than that of healthy.

  • The previous study showed that die-back of apple trees caused by soil-borne diseases was significantly high in the apple orchards in Chungbuk province. The correlation between dieback ratio and cultivation environment in apple orchards infected by soil-borne diseases was investigated in this study. The dieback ratio of five orchards diseased by violet root rot and five places infected by white root rot showed significantly positive correlation with Ca content and available $P_2O_5$ content in soil, respectively. Whereas, the dieback ratio of fourteen orchards diseased by Phytophthora root rot was not significant. Subgrouping of cultivation environment analysis showed that the slope degree of orchard and the number of fruit setting also affected the dieback ratio caused by violet root rot and Ca content in soil also affected the dieback ratio caused by white root rot. It showed that the slope degree, soil texture, Mg and Ca content affected the dieback ratio caused by Phytophthora root rot. These results can be applied to reduce die-back ratio by the modification cultivation environment for each soil-borne disease.

  • This studies was carried out to find the effect of inorganic matters of Apple Leaves on the occurrence of Alternaria leaf spot and calicium compounds on mycelial growth of Alternaria mali. Diseased leaf rate of Alternaria leaf spot of susceptible apple varieties was 84.8%, moderate resistant 8.1% and resistant 0.3% respectively and in No. of lesion per leaf, the tendency was same. CaO contents of apple leaves was contained much in the resistant varieties than susceptible one. It was estimated that calcium is one of factors on resistance to apple leaf spot by the results of relations among CaO contents and diseased leaf rate from July to August and No. of lesion per leaf was correlated significantly as r=-0.551, r=-0.585, -0.485 but in T-N, $P_2O_5,\;K_2O,\;MgO,\;Na_2O$, there was no difference among varieties. Then, growth of Alternaria mali was possible in the media of which pH ranged up to $11{\sim}13$, and calcium has effect of inhibition on growth of Alternaria mali.
