  • Foreign bodies in the paranasal sinuses are not commonly observed. Recently, we have observed an interesting case of metalic foreign body (a fragment of bullet) which remained in the posterior part of the left ethmoid sinus for about 30 years, and report here now with a review of literature.

  • The incidence of malignant schwannoma in the head and neck is extremely rare. Most tumors appear as a rapidly expanding nonpainful mass and the symptoms are usually attributable to local expansion of the mass. About one half occurs in association with von Recklinghausen's disease. Wide surgical excision is generally recommended as a primary treatment. Recently, there has been a trend to include postoperative radiation therapy as a primary modality. Prognosis of head and neck malignant schwannoma has been reported as particularly poor, However, recent authors advocate that prolonged survival is possible after adequate therapy including postoperative radiation therapy. We present our experience with these tumors on very rare locations such as the ethmoid sinus and the larynx, with the review of literatures.

  • Paranasal sinuses of the empty space is filled with air that exists in the bones in the face. However, the pus becomes inflamed paranasal sinuses sinusitis onset brings the voice of change, and complained of headaches and lethargy. Therefore, in this paper, paranasal sinuses related diseases to predict voice analysis parameter as measured by changes in paranasal sinuses through external stimuli is investigated and carried out a study to analysis the function consisting of the frontal sinus, ethmoid sinus, maxillary sinus, sphenoid sinus. From this, cold pack stimulation in the paranasal sinus area for stimulation before and after voice was performed by measuring formant frequency and external stimuli through correlation analysis of the mutual impact on paranasal sinuses were analyzed.

  • Osteomas are uncommon benign turners, occasionally located in the paranasal sinuses, of which the frontal and ethmoid sinus is the most frequent site. The etiology of the osteoma is still unknown but three possible theories have been proposed; embryological, traumatic and infective. The most common symptoms of osteoma are facial pain and headache, but most of them are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on routine sinus radiography. Recently, the authors experienced two cases of large osteoma of the ethmoid sinus that were removed successfully by external ethmoidectomy.

  • Purpose : This is study of whether 3-D conformal radiotherapy for carcino-mas of the ethmoid sinus were better than those treated with conventional 2-D plan, Materials and Methods : The 3-D conformal treatment Plans were compared with conventional 2-D plans in 4 patients with malignancy of the ethmoid sinus. Isodose distribution, dose statistics, and dose volume histogram of the planning target volume were used to evaluate differences between 2-D and 3-D plans. In addition. the risk of radiation exposure of surrounding normal critical organs are evaluated by means of point dose calculation and dose volume histogram. Results : 3-D conformal treatment plans for each patient that the better tumor coverages by the planning target volume with improved dose homo-geneity, compared to 2-D conventional treatment Plans in the same Patient. On the other hand, the radiation dose distributions to the surrounding nor-mal tissue organs, such as the orbit and optic nerves are not significantly reduced with our technique, but a substantial sparing in the brain stem and optic chiasm for each patient. Conclusion : Our findings represented the potential advantage of 3-D treatment planning for dose homogeniety as well as sparing of the normal tissue surrounding the tumor. However, further investigational studies are required to define the clinical benefit.

  • Schwannomas are benign neurogenic tumors arising from the peripheral nerve sheath and rare in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. About 4% of schwannomas in the head and neck area arise in the sinonasal cavity. As unilateral nasal masses in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, schwannomas are likely to be mistaken for more common lesions such as nasal polyps or mucoceles. We recently experienced a case of schwannoma on the ethmoid sinus in a 33-year-old male which was surgically removed. Herein, we report this unusual case of schwannoma on the ethmoid sinus with a brief review of literature.

  • Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor of childhood which presents various clinical symptoms depending on the primary and metastatic sites. However, it has been rarely reported that sudden onset of blindness was the chief complaint of neuroblastoma. A four years old boy was admitted to the Yeungnam University Hospital with the chief complaint of a sudden onset of blindness due to a distant metastasis of abdominal neuroblastoma to the sphenoid sinus. On admission, both side pupils were dilated without light reflex, fundoscopy showed pale optic disk, electroretinogram was subnormal and visual evoked potential showed no response. The liver was palpable in $3{\frac{1}{2}}$ finger breadth from the right costal margin and adult fist sized mass was palpable in the right flank. Skull X-ray showed destructed sphenoid bone and clinoid process and brain CT scan showed tumor mass in the sphenoid sinus and left orbit. Ultrasonogram and CT scan of the abdomen showed large tumor masses around the right kidney and para-aortic and retropancreatic lymph node. IVP showed displaced right calyceal system with preserved contour. Left supraclavicular lymph node which appeared after admission was biopsied and it showed poorly differentiated neuroblasts. He was treated according to the multiagent chemotherapy schedule for stage IV neuroblastoma patient of children's cancer study group. Abdominal tumor masses and sphenoid sinus mass were markedly reduced after 2 courses of the combination chemotherapy of cyclophosphamide, vincristine, DTIC, adriamycin and VM-26. Eventhough the blindness was not improved, the patient has been in good clinical condition.
