  • In this study, Horgan(2005)'s argument highlights the centrality to any successful counter-terrorism strategy of understanding the social context in which terrorist ideologies take root. Counter-terrorism refers to the practices, tactics, techniques, and strategies that governments, militaries, police departments and corporations adopt in response to terrorist threats and/or acts, both real and imputed. Pickering et al.(2008) historically explained four counter-terrorism strategies as traditional counter-terrorism model, community intelligence model, belonging model, social cohesion model. It is thus proposed that counter-terrorism strategies are based in established networks within the community and proactively seeks to continually renew these relationships between the community and police. This approach must embrace an explicit recognition of multiculturalism and its political imperative and drive in a policing organization explicitly committed to social cohesion and human rights in both discourse and practice. We, therefore, suggests community tree counter-terrorism approaches, or community intelligence model, belonging model and social cohesion model to apply to counter-terrorism agencies in Korea. These models are on the basis of Pickering et al.'s counter-terrorism models, which by using community policing to boot socially cohesion police are better able to position themselves as mediators to negotiate settlements between the competing demands of different social groups.

  • Various factors in daily life cause stress, which could stem from trivial or major events. Stress is not appeared at any time but is appeared over the lifetime. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct studies to identify ways to manage stress. In the present study, we developed an iris analysis-based system to diagnose and manage stress. By analyzing its correlation with the degree of stress measured using the iris diagnosis and a questionnaire, the user's degree of stress quantitates. The system proposed in this study can be used to measure the degree of stress experienced by the user, which can be an effective method for the early diagnosis and prevention of stress-related diseases.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to verify the validity and reliability of the modified Transition Shock Scale for use among nursing students. Methods: From March 8-April 3, 2018, 207 nursing students participated in this study and were asked to complete self-reported questionnaires, including transition shock, clinical stress, and adapting to clinical practicums. The IBM SPSS Win 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs were used for data analysis. Results: A confirmatory factor analysis supported good convergent and discriminant validities ($x^2/df=1.58$, TLI=.92, CFI=.95, RMSEA=.053, AVE=.51-.68, CR=.75-.68). Correlations among transition shock, clinical stress (r=.34, p<.001), and adapting to clinical practicums (r=-.54, p<.001) were significant. Cronbach's alpha for the overall scale was .85, and for the six subfactors it ranged from .65 to .75. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the 17-item transition shock questionnaire is an appropriate instrument for measuring nursing students' transition shock with good validity and reliability.

  • Despite its legal, systematic and quantitative growth, Korean private security has not been showing satisfactory level of qualitative growth comparing to quantitative growth as it socially shocked with recent occurrence of the events and accidents. People on demand of security are making use of private security service to offset insufficient supply of security power as, especially, the incendiarism at Sungryemun last February brought out security issues for nationally important facilities and cultural assets, and other cases showed that the police would not cope with the appropriate security services under the current security system for protecting the life and property of people. For the supplementation of security power, the private security service is prevalent, but lots of service providers would not overcome its small business scale, except some large-sized security providers. There are some problem occurred as some providers employed staff who would not have the stuff for performing security service and they even committed illegal actions. Some opinions pointed out that it should come up with measures as they socially lose their credit. Therefore, this research suggests the recognition of the importance and the improvement measures of human resources management as follows. Security Service needs: 1. control of criteria for the employment/recruitment of human resources; 2. inducement of qualitative improvement of security service by ensuring excellent quality of human resources; 3. elevation of morale of organizational members with the operation of efficient promotion system; 4. introduction of professional certification system for the inflow of excellent quality of human resources.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the effects of resilience on posttraumatic stress symptoms and dissociation and whether depression mediates the relationships between resilience and posttraumatic stress symptoms and dissociation. Methods : A total of 115 firefighters participated in the study. Data were collected via the Life Events Checklist, Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Dissociative Experience Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Structural equation modeling and path analysis were applied to estimate the relationships between resilience, depression, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and dissociation. Results : Greater resilience was associated with lower posttraumatic stress symptoms and dissociation, and the relationship between them was fully mediated by depression. Conclusions : Specific aspects of depression may help explain the relationships between resilience and posttraumatic stress symptoms and dissociation. Tailored prevention programs and treatments based on resilience and depression may prevent posttraumatic stress symptoms and dissociation in firefighters and improve treatments outcomes among firefighters with posttraumatic stress symptoms and/or dissociation.

  • We detected the coseismic ionospheric disturbance generated by the earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and greater in Korean Peninsula. We considered the seismic events such as Gyeongju earthquake in September 2016 with magnitude 5.8, the Pohang earthquake in November 2017 with magnitude 5.4, and the underground nuclear explosion from North Korea in September 2017 with magnitude 5.7. Although all GPS stations were not detected, the ionospheric disturbance induced by these earthquakes occurred approximately 10-30 minutes and 40-60 minutes after the events. We inferred that the time difference within each variation is due to the different focal depth and the geometry of epicenter, satellite, and GPS station. In the case of the Gyeongju earthquake, the earthquake had relatively deeper depth than the other earthquakes. However, the seismic magnitude was bigger and it occurred at nighttime when the ionospheric activity was stable. So we could observe such anomalous variations. It is considered that the ionospheric disturbance caused by the difference in velocity of the upward propagating waves generated by earthquake appears more than once. Our results indicate that the detection of ionospheric disturbances varies depending on the geometry of the GPS station, satellite, and epicenter or the detection method and that the apparent growth of amplitude in the time series varies depending on the focal depth or the site-satellite-epicenter geometry.

  • The purpose of this study is to econometrically analyze the negative impact of the May 18 Democratic Uprising on the Gwangju/Jeonnam regionional economy using the Synthetic Control Method (SCM). The SCM SCM is a methodology similar to the difference-in-difference(DID) method of microeconometrics. It is applied to macroeconomic variables such as country, region, etc. to estimate the causal relationship between specific events and the dependent variable. In this study, as of 1980, local tax revenue data of metropolitan local governments were used as a proxy variable for the economy of the region, and the impact of the May 18 Democratic Uprising on the economy of Gwangju/Jeonnam region was analyzed through various socio-economic indicators. In this study, data were used to analyze from 1971 to 2000, and as a result of empirical analysis, local tax revenues in Gwangju/Jeonnam area were less collected than normal routes up to 17%. In addition, the significance of this analysis was confirmed through in-time placebo effect analysis and in-space placebo effect analysis, which are methods of analyzing the robustness of the control group synthesis method.
