Safety culture degradation signs in nuclear power plants with complex and diverse systems can lead to their equipments performance deterioration. If these signs are neglected, they become potential causes of accidents. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor safety culture in the point of view of organization and management as well as to evaluate safety performance of nuclear power plants. Therefore, This paper suggested a methodology to evaluate safety culture weakness contributing the accidents' root causes in the case accidents occur at nuclear power plants. After reviewing methodologies using at domestic and international industry, the methodology suitable for domestic nuclear power plants was determined.
As the technology of information and communication has developed over recent years, an embedded system is applied in multiple industries and becomes more complicated. For this reason, embedded system development cost and time are also increased. For decreasing the cost and time, this paper suggests requirement evaluation method for concurrent development of an embedded system based on Discrete Event System(DEVS) Formalism. This paper proposes a method of describing the requirements specification in the form of DEVS atomic model. Also, the paper proposes the evaluator model that compares evaluation target system and the requirements model that is an implementation of requirement specification and proposes the evaluation method using them. In addition, we propose a method to utilize the requirement model created for requirements evaluation in the concurrent development process of the embedded system. As the case study, this paper proceeds requirement evaluation of Kinect depth data processing system.

A simulation technique is very useful method to analyze the performance on various engineering area. To automate port systems, we have need of simulation to analyze an effect of assigning and operating devices. Thus we propose simulation methodology to be applied to an analysis, evaluation, planning for port automation. To do this, we have adopted the discrete event system specification based system entity structure / model base framework for modeling and simulation environment. We have performed modeling and simulation on entities of port systems such as container crane, yard tractor, transfer crane, etc. The proposed methodology has an advantage being able to effectively simulate on alternatives of composition and operation strategy for port systems. Some case studies will show the validity of proposed simulation methodology.

Probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) has been widely used to evaluate the seismic risk of nuclear power plants (NPPs). However, studies on seismic PSA for process plants, such as gas plants, oil refineries, and chemical plants, have been scarce. This is because the major disasters to which these process plants are vulnerable include explosions, fires, and release (or dispersion) of toxic chemicals. However, seismic PSA is essential for the plants located in regions with significant earthquake risks. Seismic PSA entails probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), event tree analysis (ETA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and fragility analysis for the structures and essential equipment items. Among those analyses, ETA can depict the accident sequence for core damage, which is the worst disaster and top event concerning NPPs. However, there is no general top event with regard to process plants. Therefore, PSA cannot be directly applied to process plants. Moreover, there is a paucity of studies on developing fragility curves for various equipment. This paper introduces PSA for gas plants based on FTA, which is then transformed into Bayesian network, that is, a probabilistic graph model that can aid risk-informed decision-making. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a gas plant, and several decision-making cases are demonstrated.

For a good product quality and plant safety, it is necessary to implement the on-line monitoring and diagnosis schemes of industrial processes. Combined with monitoring systems, reliable diagnosis schemes seek to find assignable causes of the process variables responsible for faults or special events in processes. This study deals with the real-time diagnosis of complicated industrial processes from the intelligent use of multivariate statistical techniques. The presented diagnosis scheme consists of a classification-based diagnosis using nonlinear representation and filtering of process data. A case study based on the simulation data was conducted, and the diagnosis results were obtained using different diagnosis schemes. In addition, the choice of future estimation methods was evaluated. The results showed that the performance of the presented scheme outperformed the other schemes.

Recently, various systems have been developed to support ship navigation safety. In order to verify the usefulness of such a system, it is most ideal to try it on a real vessel, but there are many difficulties. As an alternative, usability verification methods applied with modelling and simulation (M&S) techniques are required such as FMSS, which is closest to reality, is very expansive to construct, and there needs the specialized operator. For this reason, this paper proposes a method to verify the navigation safety support system by modeling and simulation techniques based on the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism. As a first step, we designed the navigation simulation architecture based on the SES/MB framework, and details on modelling ship core equipment and navigator agents based on the DEVS. Through this, we are able to implement the navigation simulation system for vessels, and evaluate the effectiveness of navigation safety support elements such as collision avoidance, etc. using developed scenarios.

Recently, seismic Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) methods have been developed for process plants, such as gas plants, oil refineries, and chemical plants. The framework originated from the PSA of nuclear power plants, which aims to assess the risk of reactor core damage. The original PSA method was modified to adopt the characteristics of a process plant whose purpose is continuous operation without shutdown. Therefore, a fault tree, whose top event is shut down, was constructed and transformed into a Bayesian Network (BN), a probabilistic graph model, for efficient risk-informed decision-making. In this research, the fault tree-based BN from the previous research is further developed to consider the multi-hazard of earthquake-induced fire and explosion (EQ-induced F&E). For this purpose, an event tree describing the occurrence of fire and explosion from a release is first constructed and transformed into a BN. And then, this BN is connected to the previous BN model developed for seismic PSA. A virtual plot plan of a gas plant is introduced as a basis for the construction of the specific EQ-induced F&E BN to test the proposed BN framework. The paper demonstrates the method through two examples of risk-informed decision-making. In particular, the second example verifies how the proposed method can establish a repair and retrofit strategy when a shutdown occurs in a process plant.
So far, many simulation researches associated with naval ships have been concentrated on the tactical systems and naval ship development. However, studies on the improvement of living conditions for naval ship crews were limited. This study targets a crew mess room which is a typical welfare facility in naval ships and existing modeling and simulation methodologies for naval tactical and strategic systems cannot be applied to the crew room simulations. This paper suggests a simulation modeling framework based on 3-dimensional discrete event simulation methodology for crew mess room congestion assessment and operation scenarios. The simulation modeling framework is verified through practical case simulations. The purpose of simulation modeling framework consists of process and system architecture for operation feasibility tests of welfare facilities in naval ships and is to guide an assessment of the operability performance of a crew mess room.
