  • The study was conducted to know whether turfgrass wear tolerance, growth, and quality could be improved by the application of silicon and potassium. First, turf responses to silicate and potassium were evaluated by several parameters such as, turf visual quality, root length, shoot density, and dry weight under the field condition. Second, turf responses to traffic frequencies were examined by turf growth (root) length, shoot density and dry weight) and soil hardness under the field condition. Finally, under traffic stress condition, the effects of silica and potassium application on wear tolerance were evaluated through the methods described above. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) rooting were significantly improved by silica. The root length was enhanced by an increase in potassium silicate application. Certain level of light traffic is beneficial while frequent traffic cause serious adverse effect on visual quality of bentgrass. Under a traffic stress condition with 10 times of footing a day for 30 days, silica and potassium increased turf visual quality by 6.38% and 10.25% respectively when compared to the control. Silica and potassium treatment on trafficked plot increased turf visual quality by 11.4% and 10.2% respectively in comparison with the control with significant reduction of wear injury from the traffic. A co-application of potassium silicate with potassium sulfate provided the enhanced visual quality of turf as compared to application of silica or potassium fertilizer, respectively.

  • Ginseng is cultivated in Korea. Japan. China. the Soviet Union and North America. Studies of the macroclimate of each of these producing areas shows that ginseng has certain requirements for production. In each producing area the microclimate is modified in different ways. Comparisons of recent research data from North America. Korea and China is presented in order to define. more precisely. the various microclimate requirements for ginseng production. These include studies of light interception as influenced by different shade materials. In North America. wood. woven black polypropylene and knitted polyethylene shade are used. whereas in China. dried grasses are bound together in layers with wire and polyvinylchloride is inserted between the layers. The influence of these various shade materials in terms of crop grow1h and root yield are presented. The major effect of temperature seems to be on root growth. During much of the growing season optimum temperatures for root grow1h are not reached. Growth analysis data for different age plants are being used to show the effects of different soil temperature regimes on distribution of dry matter between the shoot and root.

  • Seasenal absorption of inorganic nutrients and dry matter Production were studied with four-year-old ginseng plant. The residuary amounts of the nutrients supplied to ginseng Plantation were decreased with lime elapsed. The decreasing rate was greater in chemical plots than in Yacto Plots. The amounts of manure applied in this current year and growth in dry matter production of ginseng showed no signficant difference. The amounts of mineral nutrients per unit dry matter were proportional to the amounts of supplied with chemical fertilizer in the early period of growing season but with Yacto in the late season of growing. Seasonal changes of nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium contents per unit dry weight in each organ were high in the middle of May. They decreased sharply in the middle of June and then slowly decreased in both leaves and stems but gradually increased in roots. The absorption ratio of nitrogen to Phosphorus (N/P) was high, and that of nitrogen to Potassium (N/K) was few. The amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and Potassium in leaves became lower with increasing the relative light intensity, but in stems, the concentrations were different with the kind of mineral nutrients. The requisite amounts of mineral nutrient of ginseng plant were 8.3∼9.9 kg of nitrogen, 1.2∼1.5 kg of phosphorus, 6.4∼7.9 kg of potassium Per 10 a for five years.

  • In order to select the water flooding-tolerant trees among Korean oaks, we cultivated the sapling of 6 deciduous oak species, Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata, under the water flooding treatment and the control, and analysed the growth difference among them. For comparing the growth between treatment and control, we measured 13 morphological and ecological traits, such as leaf Leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, shoot length, stem length, stem diameter, root length, plant length, leaf weight, stem weight, root weight, plant weight. Q. serrata have no growth difference between water flooding treatment and control, but the rest 5 species showed the growth reduction in water flooding treatment. Tolerance of oak species to water flooding was risen in order of Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata. Thus, among Korean deciduous oaks, it is desirable to plant Q. serrata for flood plain restoration of river.

  • This study was conducted to find out the damage of rice root nematodes on rice and determine the economic injury level. In pot experiments, rice root nematode, Hirschmanniella imamuri, suppressed the growth and reduced yield of a rice, Milyang 23, above critical levels. Tillering was depressed above 5, 000 nematodes per pot inoculum levels. Heading was also delayed by 6 days when inoculum level was above 20, 000. Weight of roots and grain yield in rice plants which inoculated with 20, 000 nematodes/pot were reduced by 41% and 31%, respectively. Economic injury level of rice root nematode appeared to be 1, 500 nematodes per 30g of fresh root on Aug. 30.

  • This study was carried out to examine the effect of cutting condition on the growth of rooted cuttings and their subsequent growth of cut flower in plug cutting of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma'. The more leaves were attached to the cutting, the higher shoot growth of rooted cutting was observed. Cutting with two to six leaves was effective in shoot growth and rooting than any other treatment. Shoot growth of rooted cutting was not affected by cutting length, but rooting was better in 5 to 7 cm long cutting. Shoot growth and rooting of rooted cutting was promoted by increasing the cutting diameter, and rooting was better in 3.6-4.2 mm thick cutting than 3.1 mm thick cutting. As the treating concentration of NAA increased, shoot growth was inhibited and root length shortened in rooted cutting. Soaking with $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ${\alpha}$-naphtalene acetic acid (NAA) for 1 h was effective in shoot growth and rooting. Root growth such as root number, root length, and root weight was better in rooting medium mixed with 2:2 of peatmoss:perlite than the other treatments. When rooted cutting produced from cutting with four or six leaves was planted, better length, weight, and leaf number of cut flower was observed. In rooted cutting produced with 7-9 cm long cutting, growth of cut flower such as length, weight, and ray flower number was more effective than the others. Therefore, it is recommended that the 7 cm long and 3.6 mm thick cutting with four to six leaves is used to improve their rooting and subsequent growth of cut flower in plug cutting of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma'.

  • The chemical properties of oak tree wood vinegar and the effect of wood vinegar on the tomato seedling were investigated to apply wood vinegar efficiently to the organic - and natural farming system. On the basis of the results from chemical properties of the oak tree wood vinegar, mineral nutrient contents of wood vinegar was low. Therefore, wood vinegar could not be a suitable nutrient source for the plant growth at 500∼1000 times dilution level. which commonly used in the farming, if only wood vinegar is supplied for the nutrient source for the plant growth. The application of wood vinegar increased root growth up the 500 times dilution level while decreased shoot growth. Furthermore. the anion concentrations such as nitrate and phosphate of the plant were decreased by the application of wood vinegar while cation concentrations such as K. Ca. and Mg were increased. Phenolic compounds of wood vinegar such as chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid enhanced the root growth. Interestingly the application of ferulic acid increased both root and shoot growth at the level of 10$^{-4}$ M concentration. It indicated that the effect of wood vinegar on the production of healthy plant seedling may be due to the beneficial root growth by phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid and/or ferulic acid of the wood vinegar. However. the effect of the wood vinegar on the plant growth could be influenced by synergism or antagonism of different phenolic compounds in wood vinegar used. In addition. drench in the soil of wood vinegar may be more beneficial compared to foliar application for the improvement of root activity and plant growth.

  • The present study was conducted to know the growth and yield of in response to the drought stress at the different soybean growth stage. Drought stress was given to the soybean plants on early vegetative growth at fourth-node stage(FNS), mid-growth at beginning pod stage(BPS) and late growth at beginning seed stage(BSS) for 30 days, which are high availability in soil water stress on climate condition of Korea. Dry weight was decreased severely by water stress at FNS, and BPS and BSS has no difference compared to control. Chlorophyll content of leaf severely decreased at the end of water stress of FNS and BPS, but was recovered at the harvest stage. Drought-stressed root distributed mainly near the soil surface and number and dry weight of root nodule were decreased severely by drought stress at BPS. Number of pod, seed weight and yield were decreased by drought stress and showed the highest yield loss at BPS.

  • For the proper tree management of Taxus cuspidata, distributed in the High 1 Ski Slope construction area in Baekwoonsan, Jeungsun-gun, Kangwon-do, the growing states of 323 trees(including transplanted 57trees) are investigated. Tree height, rootcollar diameter, D.B.H., stem condition, apical shoot, dead branch, needle growth condition, 2-year-old needle loss, root condition, tree form are investigated. Taxus cuspidata are mainly growing at the sites, high elevated mountain ridge or slopes facing north. Growing states of Taxus cuspidata, distributed in Baekwoonsan are relatively better than those of Taxus cuspidata and Abies koreana at other subalpine zone in Korea. Damaged trees are mainly due to root-removal through transplanting, root-damages by raising the ground level and digging. Several methods of Taxus cuspidata conservation were suggested.
