The occurrence of subclavian steal syndrome is possible in patients with either severe stenosis or occlusion in the left proximal subclavian or brachiocephalic arteries. Limited and insufficient blood flow in the vessel with a lesion induces blood supply from the opposite side via any of the connected vessels, which is called a subclavian steal phenomenon. The duplex sonography is useful for detecting this phenomenon. Some patients who experience this phenomenon complain of vertebrobasilar insufficiency, such as headache or numbness and weakness in the arm, and so on. Subclavian steal syndrome means subclavian steal phenomenon accompanied by these symptoms. We present a patient with focal severe stenosis of the brachiocephalic artery, manifested as blood flow reversal in the vertebral, and a "to-and-fro" waveform pattern in the external carotid, internal carotid, and common carotid arteries.

Subclavian steal syndrome is a type of obstructive artery disease caused by severe stenosis and occlusion of a left proximal subclavian artery or brachiocephalic trunk. The resulting vertebro-basilar insufficiency symptoms are due to retrograde blood flow from the contralateral vertebral and basilar arteries into the low-pressure ipsilateral upper extremity vessels. For that reason, patients usually experience dizziness or arm ischemic symptoms. Neurointervention is an effective treatment for ischemic stroke, including the subclavian artery stenosis. This paper reports a patient with subclavian steal syndrome who had a vertebral artery Doppler waveform change in duplex sonography and a 12 mmHg difference in interarm systolic blood pressure. A stenotic lesion of the subclavian artery was treated effectively by inserting a precise stent. The follow up examination showed that the vertebral artery Doppler waveform change disappeared and recovered and that the 12 mmHg difference in interarm systolic blood pressure decreased to 5 mmHg after treatment.

The brachiocephalic trunk (Bct) branches from the aortic arch (Aa) and consists, in ruminants, of the common trunk of the left subclavian artery (LSb), the bicarotid artery (Bc) or left and right common carotid artery (LCc and RCc), and the right subclavian artery (RSb). This pattern differs from the primitive mammalian Aa pattern due to the fact that the analogs of the LCc and LSb migrate cranially and merge with the common trunk of the RCc and RSb in the embryonic stage. A Bct having a septal remnant that consisted of the tunica media was observed in a female Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus), which was deemed to have resulted from an incomplete merging of the vessel walls between a carnivoran-type Bct and an incomplete LSb. This is the first report of an abnormal Bct in a Korean water deer.

Most of the Korean apartment complexes are considered as gated communities having characteristics such as self-sufficiency in service provision, self-governance and exclusiveness. Today the exclusionary features of apartment complexes are reinforced by a new practice of erecting gates against pedestrians in addition to the existing walls without considering implication of the practice over neighborhoods. Three groups of residents, those who live in low-rise residential areas without walls, apartment complexes with walls and apartment complexes with walls and gates were surveyed to measure the impact of the new exclusionary practice of gated communities on social sustainability of neighborhoods. Gates turn out to improve social sustainability indicators related to life quality but lower social cohesion of neighborhoods by lowering inclusiveness indicator considerably. The new apartment complexes with increased exclusiveness shake the established order of co-existence between low-rise residential areas and apartment complexes and strengthen spatial and social segregation within neighborhoods.

This research analyzes the differentiation of the reproduction of the educational capital according to the residential area which is determined by the socio-economic status of parents. The results of the research show that: the reproduction of the educational capital of the region where highly educated people are segregated is very different from that of other regions in terms of the quantity and quality. The fact that one resides in a certain special area tends to determine the future of his child, so the boundary between the social groups is being intensified through the geographic concentration of the affluence and poverty. Gangnam Gu where the different educational capital is reproduced through the better educational environment tends to become the gated city which has the invisible but strong socio-economic barriers through the sharp rise of the housing(apartment) value and the concentration of highly educated people. Through the exclusion of other classes by the high price of the housing, only the residents within the barrier have access to the good educational facilities and services.
