  • Frost action may cause extensive damage to building, structures, roads, railways and utility lines in seasonal frost. The research about frost heave of natural ground has been considerably performed. In late years various structures have become complicated with the development of social infrastructure maintenance. Therefore countermeasure to frost heave becomes a matter of great importance from a new viewpoint. This study was aimed at catching natural ground frost heaving force quantitatively. Frost heaving forces on circular steel plates which were set on ground surface were measured in field test. The frost heaving forces arise at freezing front propagates to the structures through frozen soil layer. Besides, a full scale model of multi-anchored retaining wall was installed in field, and the freezing lines, frost heave pressure to act on a wall block, and so on were measured. Finally, the position and shape of frost line were estimated by using numerical simulation and a method to determine replacement range was suggested with soil properties and weather data.

  • Recently structures become longer and higher because of the developments of new materials and construction techniques. However, such modern structures are susceptible to excessive structural vibrations, which may induce problems of serviceability and structural damages. In this paper we attempt to control structural vibration using the probabilistic neural network(PNN) and the artificial neural network(ANN) based on the training pattern that consist of only the structural state vector and the control force. The state vectors of the structure and control forces made by linear quadratic regulator(LQR) algorithm are used for training pattern of PNN and ANN. The proposed algorithm is applied for the vibration control of the three story shear building under Northridge earthquake. Control results by the proposed PNN and ANN are compared with each other.

  • Vibration occurs not only in daily life but also in various fields such as semiconductors, aerospace, vehicles, and ships. Unexpected vibrations can cause fatigue damage to structures and degrade the performance of the entire system, having very detrimental effects. Particularly, low-frequency vibrations can be very harmful to precision equipment, human bodies, and buildings. Therefore, mitigating low-frequency vibrations is essential for effective vibration reduction. In this study, a kirigami-inspired composite meta-structure is proposed for low-frequency vibration reduction. Inspired by kirigami, the meta-structure is designed to transform from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional form upon compression, leveraging structural advantages. Additionally, it is designed to have quasizero stiffness characteristics, providing excellent vibration reduction performance even at low frequencies. The kirigami composite meta-structure was fabricated using carbon fiber reinforced TPU through 3D printing. Its structural and vibrational characteristics were evaluated and analyzed through compression and vibration tests.

  • This study relates to a fixing device for gas piping installed in a building such as an apartment or a building. The gas piping is fixed to the inside of the housing so as to buffer the gas piping in all directions, thereby relieving vibration caused by an earthquake or an impact, Disclosed is an earthquake-proof fixing device for a gas pipeline that can minimize damages caused by damage to an earthquake and a gas pipeline by preventing damage and breakage. An apparatus for fixing a gas pipe to a bracket provided on a wall or a wall of a building, the apparatus comprising: a housing coupled to a wall or a bracket and coupled to the inside of the housing; a gas pipe penetrating through the housing to fix the gas pipe; The first plate spring includes a first plate spring formed with a plurality of concave-convex portions that are elastically supported in four directions. The first plate spring is screwed to the front surface or the rear surface of the housing. The lower plate is coupled to one end and the other end, And a pair of first adjusting screws for adjusting the elastic force of the spring. Through this study, damage and damage of gas piping due to earthquake or impact can be minimized.

  • Purpose: The evaluation of seismic performance of critical structures has been emerging a key issue in Korea, since a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, the worst in Koran history, struck Gyeongju, southern area in Korea on september 12th, 2016. In particular, the catastrophic failure of nonstructural components such as sprinkler piping systems can cause significant economic loss or loss of life during and after an earthquake. The nonstructural components can be more fragile than structural components in seismic behavior. Method: This study presents the seismic performance evaluation of fire protection piping system, using coupled building-piping system installed with Triple Friction Pendulum Bearings (TPBs). Kobe (Japan), Kocaeli (Turkey), and GyeongJu (Korea) were selected to consider the uncertainty of ground motions in this study. Result: In the simulation results, it was observed that the reduction of maximum displacements of the piping system with the TPBs' system was significant: Kobe, Kocaeli, and Gyeongju cases were 49%, 14.4% and 21.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Therefore, using seismically isolated system in a building-piping system can be more effective to reduce the seismic risk than a normally installed building-piping systems without TPBs in strong earthquakes.
