  • 복식은 그 시대의 분위기와 취향을 흡수하여 이를 반영하며 착용자의 지위와 욕구를 보여 준다. 19세기에 접어들면서 서구 사회는 프랑스 혁명과 산업혁명의 결과로 기존의 귀족과 평민이라는 계급의 장벽이 무너지고 공업화와 비약적인 경제발전으로 고도의 산업사회로의 성장을 계속하게 되었다. 이러한 고도의 경제성장은 물질만능주의의 사회풍조를 가져왔으며 이는 기존의 신분위주의 사회계급을 경제력 위주의 사회계급으로 재편성되게 하였다. (중략)

빅토리안 스타일 주택 실내 디자인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Elements of Interior Design in Victorian Style)

  • 본 연구는 빅토리아 양식의 주택 실내에 대해 그 기본적 특징을 구체적으로 밝혀봄으로써 오늘날에도 지속적으로 영향을 미치는 빅토리아 양식 주택 실내의 특징을 구체적으로 밝히고 양식의 의미를 재조명해 보고자 문헌고찰을 실시하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 빅토리아 양식의 주택은 전원의 단독주택이나 도시의 빌라, 타운하우스의 유형에 매우 다양한 역사주의 양식이 나타났고 지금까지 어느 시대 보다 다양한 주택유형이 등장하였다. 그중에서 벽돌과 뾰족한 지붕 사용과 같은 중세 고딕양식이 대표적인 특징으로 나타났다. 둘째, 빅토리아 양식의 실내는 로마네스크, 로코코, 고딕과 같이 과거 양식들이 사용되거니 하나의 실내에 절충적으로 표현되는 것이 특징이었고 방의 기능과 규범에 따라 양식들이 적용되거나 디자인의 비중을 달리하여 형식성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 실내는 낭만주의와 자연주의 영향으로 자유롭고 불규칙하며 다양성이 특징이었고 절충주의와 장식과다는 이러한 맥락에서 이루어진 표현 특징인 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 직물과 소품을 이용한 장식은 당시 공기오염이나 위생문제와 같은 환경적 요인이 관련된 것으로 나타났다. 기술적 발달은 주택에서 부엌과 위생설비 설치와 같은 전국적인 변화로 반영되었을 뿐 아니라 생산된 신재료와 주택 제품들을 통해 조화를 고려하는 다양한 디자인이 가능해지고 풍성하고 화려한 표현이 가능하게 해 주었다. 결론적으로 빅토리아 양식의 표현 특징에 영향 미친 요인은 낭만주의와 자연주의 사조 뿐 아니라 기술발달을 바탕으로 가족의 편이성을 고려하고 사회적 규범, 공기 오염과 같은 환경적 요인과 위생문제 해결, 빈번한 외곽과의 교류에 의한 개인의 가치 반영이라는 다양한 요인이 결부되었음을 알 수 있어 이와 같이 문제에 대처하는 방식으로써 빅토리아 양식에 대해 재고되어야 할 것이며 새로운 평가가 이루어져야 할 것이다.Cicindela(Cicindela) lewisi[sic] Bates: 한국곤충명집(1994)] 12. C.(Sophiodela) chinensis De Geer, 1774 길앞잡이게임, 토론그룹, 전자메일, 채팅과 상호관련을 가진 것으로 나타났으며, 교육/정보는 검색과 쇼핑, 현실도피는 게임과 토론그룹, 외로움은 토론그룹, 전자메일과 채팅, 쇼핑은 온라인 쇼핑과 상호관련성이 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 흥미로운 사실은 성적 만족과 관련해서 게임과 채팅은 긍정적인 상호관련을 가진 것으로 나타난 반면 전자메일 서비스 이용은 성적 만족과 부정적인 상호관련을 가진 것으로 분석되었다. 이는 대학생들이 지루하게 느끼거나 외로움을 느낄 때 전자메일을 주로 이용하지만 성적 만족을 위해 전자메일을 이용하지 않고 있다는 사실을 보여주는 것이다.   • I focused my attentation on two points in this paper. Firstly, I explore the relationships between the competition system and the philosophical bases in economic and social doctrines which encouraged, the architectural profession which it supported. Secondly, I intend to describe the development of the modern competition system. The economic theories were applied to architecture; these were natural laws and laissez-faire. The principles of competition and progress were never doubted. Two developments aided architects in attaining both a sense of professional identity and a way of regulating the comprtition system; these were the founding of professional societies and the emergence of a professional architectural press. The first organized effort to control the competition system was made in 1839 by the Competition Committee of the Institute of British Architects, but the problems had remained virtually unchanged by the 1880s. A code of regulations was drawn up by the RIBA in 1872, but this were much like earlier codes and recommendations. From the 1890s, the RIBA established a permanent committee to review the conditions of all competitions and authorize members to participate; the measure was paralleled in various other countries, notably in the 1911 international regulations of the CIAM.

빅토리아 시대의 식문화와 테이블 세팅 요소에 관한 연구 (Study for the Direction of Dining Space in the Age of Queen Victoria)

  • The age of Queen Victoria, so called nearly 64 years from 1837 to 1901 that Queen Victoria was on the throne. It was the time that ceramicwares and silverwares were mass-produced thanks to the Industrial Revolution and then diverse directions of dining space could be possible in middle class. At the same time, it was the time that the production of bone china, which is main current in modem times, became established, ironstone china began to be developed, and white ceramic wares were accomplished. In addition, factors for the direction of dining space were mass-produced and Gothic style, Classic style, Majolica style, Renaissance, and Neo-rococo style had come back into fashion. Therefore, diverse designs coexisted and had great effect on dining space in this times. This study purposed to establish the decoration theory of dining space following historic flow through researching the designs and the direct factors for dining space in the age of Queen Victoria.

실험실의 과학 혁명-빅토리아시대 소설에 나타난 '미친' 과학자들의 실험실 (Scientific Revolution in the Lab: Mad Scientists' Labs in Victorian Novels)

  • It is by the mad scientists that the ontological and epistemological turn was made in that scientific era. They achieved a scientific revolution although they were regarded as eccentric, comic, unsound, and evil ones in the dark and dismal labs. Likewise, a scientist who would like to create an anomaly, something novel and abnormal, tended to be considered mad and treated as such either because of his scientific theory which differed from those of other scientists or because his obstinate methodology was often blamed for its immorality and profaneness. Despite the fanciful purpose and the anomalous way in which the mad scientists did their experiments, these were attempts to explore new scientific terrain and find something new or unexpected, which often raised controversies between the old paradigm and the new one. As Thomas Kuhn manifests, subsequently, "an older paradigm is replaced in whole or in part by an incompatible new one" and then, "there must be a conflict between the paradigm that discloses anomaly and the one that later renders the anomaly lawlike." In that sense, Frankenstein's, Jekyll's, and Moreau's eerie challenges can be interpreted as efforts to achieve the ambitious goal of solving the scientific mysteries of the world in such unfavorable environmental conditions as specified in the three novels.

후기 빅토리아 시대 사회 다윈주의와 우생학적 논쟁: 버나드 쇼의 『바바라 소령』을 중심으로 (The Debate on Social Darwinism and Eugenics in Late Victorian Period centered on Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara)

  • Through the action of Major Barbara, Shaw advocates the improvement of human race and civilization through fabian eugenic socialism in the based on the Galtonian eugenics and social Darwinism in late Victorian period. In the play, Shaw contrasts two ideologies, Barbara's spiritual institutionalized Christianity with Undershaft's worldly power to control the conventional society. For the dramatic purpose, Shaw symbolically combines the power of the munitions maker, the intellect of the scholar and the faith of the Salvationist. Shaw seems to believe that the best way of improving the human society can be comprised by effective eugenic agencies regarded Shavian trinities. In relation to the eugenic discourses for social betterment, this essay explores how Shaw's ideas on social eugenic is perceived in Major Barbara through main characters as spiritual, intellectual and economic agencies in terms of social Darwinism for the progress of the human society. As always, Shaw's evolutionary agencies are disillusionized from the idealistic faith through the realistic awareness of economic facts, which is manifested in their practices to advance the institutional society Shaw attacked. It is obvious that the significant facts of eugenic socialism/social eugenics based on social Darwinism are promoted by Barbara, Cusins and Undershaft in Major Barbara to maintain a worthy evolution of society and humanity.

  • 영화 <찰스 디킨스의 비밀 서재>는 찰스 디킨스가 『크리스마스 캐럴』을 쓰는 동안 겪는 내면의 변화를 그리고 있다. 『크리스마스 캐럴』은 도시 빈민이 늘어나고 크리스마스 전통이 잊혀 가던 빅토리아 시대에 쓰인 책이다. 찰스 디킨스의 이 책은 사람들에게 가족과 이웃을 생각하는 마음의 소중함을 불어넣었고 흩어졌던 가족이 모여 함께 식사를 하는 오늘날의 크리스마스 풍경을 만들었다. 본 논문은 분석심리학적 관점에서 영화 <찰스 디킨스의 비밀 서재>를 분석하여 영화의 주인공 찰스의 개인적 삶의 위기와 그림자 인식 과정을 다루었다. 또한 찰스 디킨스의 전기와 시대적 배경을 참조하여 자본주의 사회의 집단적 문제가 찰스 개인의 삶에서 어떤 방식으로 작용하는지 살펴보았다. 크리스마스는 죽음과 재탄생의 상징적 의미를 가지고 있으며 영화는 크리스마스를 통해 찰스가 자신의 마음 속 어둠을 인식하고 새로운 인격으로 탄생하는 과정을 보여준다. 오늘날의 사람들에게도 크리스마스는 여전히 시대를 초월한 보편적인 상징으로 작용하고 있다.

영문학을 활용한 의상디자인 전공을 위한 영어교육: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll 을 활용한 학습 모형 (Literature-Based Instruction for Fashion Design Class: Using Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll)

  • The present study proposes a model for literature-based instruction within the context of a fashion design curriculum at a Korean university. The fashion design market continues to grow. The fashion design market now requires more cultural-bound strategies and efficient communication skills. The literature provides authentic resources and is highly relevant to the development of students' culture awareness as well as language awareness. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll contains various cultural contexts of the Victorian Era. The text provides explicit knowledge of the era depicted in both illustrations and satire languages. This study instructs students to analyze and interpret texts and illustrations so that they can engage critically and analytically in reading text to increase culture awareness and language awareness. The integration of literature and fashion design can provide students an opportunity to explore language choice and acquire refined knowledge of the target culture. Along with the text, illustrations in the literature provoke student's imaginative and creative thinking skills. Students can think and discuss many issues that deal with Victorian values and reinforce creative thinking skills. In the final stage, students can design fashion inspired by Victorian values and present their own designs using the acquired languages. This eventually leads students to adapt to a new notion for the fashion market and become competent communicators in the fashion world.

  • The nineteenth century was a watershed - the extreme point of difference in the style of fashion dress and in the roles men and women played in society. This conviction has its roots in the socioeconomic changes of the 19th century and the industrial revolution, and the new working bourgeoisie' value, fashion and taste were on the rise. The bourgeois, who was not considered as having infallible taste, was looking for its own style, while on the other hand it was competing with the nobility. Therefore bourgeois' own etiquette and taste were appeared. There was ideals which the middle classes were hungry for, and it became the basis of judging an individual. The bourgeois tried to get social approval and used fashion was the mean of it. Bourgeois women fashion has a funtion as a complete symbol of the status, wealth and leisure in a patriachal society. Not only the Bourgeois tried to control themselves and to achieve the virtue of moderation, chastity and obedience by the restrictive costume, but also extravagant and cumbersome dresses has a kind of compensative funtion against a sober and simple men's dress. There was a reformative movement to break out of the legal, economic and social restrictions within the confines of respectable Victorian Society. The process of reform was long and slow for not only did laws be changed but the barriers of prejudice in a society convinced of man s mental and physical superiority had to be overcome. But even though there were many difficulties, a small number of progressive women challenged the social recognition and role of women and decisively refused the restrictive and ostentative fashion. Victorian costume was also criticized in the medical and aesthetic aspect for their impracticality. As a result, more funtional and practical women's clothes has appeared, but it have resulted in a peculiar hybrid of traditional female attire in combination with the more uncomfortable aspects of men's clothes. However it was becoming an essential look for new women who were the equals of men and wanted to be treated as such.
