  • Malignant lymphomas are neoplasms with diffuse proliferation of neoplastic lymphocytes and their precursor cells. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, which is a subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, rarely occurs in the head and neck area and is especially rare in the maxillary sinus. We report a case of a 76-year-old female patient who was referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgery office for evaluation of a dental abscess as a clinical diagnosis. Laboratory tests revealed no signs of inflammation or infection; therefore, incisional biopsy was performed. The final diagnosis was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the maxillary sinus. Here we describe this case with a review of relevant literature.

  • Primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) of the breast is a very rare disease, and the mammographic and ultrasonographic findings of breast lymphoma are variable. There are several reports of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings in patients with breast lymphomas; however, few reports have described the findings observed on MR spectroscopy or the features of diffusion weighted (DW) imaging. The authors report the findings of classical MR imaging, MR spectroscopy and DW imaging of a 48-year-old woman and a 40-year-old woman with primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of breasts. Mammography and breast ultrasonography revealed a mass with circumscribed margin. The mass showed strong enhancement after contrast injection on MR imaging. DW imaging showed reduced diffusion and high-amplitude choline (Cho) peak at 3.22 ppm was detected by single voxel MR spectroscopy which was consistent with malignancy.

  • Burkitt's lymphoma is a malignant tumor originated from B lymphocyte and a type of non-hodgkin lymphoma. It is clinically classified by endemic, sporadic and immune deficient forms. In the past, it had poor prognosis but in recent years survival rate is 50~80% treated by intensive chemotherapeutic regimens. Mostly it is a lesion of the jaws. Clinical symptoms are severe tooth mobility, displacement, gingival redness and swelling. This case is about a patient with aggressively progressing Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaws. Initial diagnosis was done in dental hospital and it has shown satisfactory outcome by prompt and appropriate treatment.

  • Pleural masses may be caused by various conditions, including benign and malignant neoplasms and non-neoplastic tumorlike conditions. Primary pleural neoplasms include solitary fibrous tumor, malignant mesothelioma, and primary pleural non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Metastatic disease is the most common neoplasm of the pleura and may uncommonly occur in patients with hematologic malignancy, including lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma. Pleural effusion is usually associated with pleural malignancy. Rarely, pleural malignancy may arise from chronic empyema, and the most common cell type is non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (pyothorax-associated lymphoma). Non-neoplastic pleural masses may be observed in several benign conditions, including tuberculosis, pleural plaques caused by asbestos exposure, and pleural loose body. Herein, we present a review of benign and malignant pleural neoplasms and tumorlike conditions with illustrations of their computed tomographic images.

  • Purpose : Tumor growth in a given neoplasm is the net result of cell proliferation and cell loss, and apoptosis is the most significant component of continuous cell loss in most tumors. In this study, we examined non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL, n=67) immunohistochemically for the presence of Bcl-2 oncoprotein and P53 protein and compared apoptotic indices (Als) and Ki-67 proliferative indices (percentages of Ki-67 positive cells). Materials and Methods : 67 patients with NHL were evaluated : 3 low-grade and 64 intermediate-grade. The phenotype was determined in 65 cases : 47 $(70\%)$ were B cell type and 18 $(27\%)$ were T ceil type. Als and Ki-67 proliferative indices were determined immunohistochemically and the overexpression of P53 and Bcl-2 protein were also evalutated. Results : The overexpressions of Bcl-2 protein and P53 protein were found in $40\%$ (26/65) and $31\%$ (20/65). The Al ranged from $0\%\;to\;15\%$ (mean 2.16, median 1.2). Cellular Bcl-2, which counteracts apoptosis, was significantly (p=0.005) associated with Als. Ki-67 proliferative indices ranged from $1\%\;to\;91\%$ (mean 55.4), and P53 was significantly (p=0.000) associated with Ki-67 proliferative indices. A positive correlation between Als and Ki-67 proliferative indices was revealed (p=0.012) in Bcl-2 positive patients. Conclusion : In NHL, we observed a correlation between Als and Bcl-2 expression, between Ki-67 proliferative indices and P53 expression, and between Als and Ki-67 proliferative indices in Bcl-2 positive patients. Our results suggest that cell apoptosis may be inseparable from cell proliferation during tumor growth.

  • Amyloidosis has been reported to be associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Amyloidosis and lymphoma can be related in two ways: lymphoma-associated systemic amyloidosis and peritumoral amyloidosis with lymphoma. We report a rare case of peritumoral amyloidosis in a patient with head and neck mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. On CT, the oropharyngeal mass showed an irregularly shaped soft-tissue density with multifocal amorphous calcifications and heterogeneous enhancement. On MRI, the mass showed heterogeneous low signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images. On contrast-enhanced MR images, the mass showed good enhancement with several inner non-enhancing foci. Concurrent pathologies, such as peritumoral amyloidosis, should be considered when calcifications are noted in patients with pre-treatment lymphoma.
