Analysis of Relationship between Standard Depth of Penetration Skin Effect and Phase Angle of Defect Signal of Eddy Current Testing (와전류(渦電流) 표준침투(標準浸透) 깊이 표피효과(表皮效果)와 결함신호(缺陷信號) 위상각(位相角)의 관계해석(關係解析))

  • An experiment to investigate the rate of change of phase angle of eddy current output signal caused by outer surface defect of nonferromagnetic tube by variation of standard depth of penetration and variation of percent of tube wall penetration was carried out. The results of the experiment show that the phase angle of defect signal is increased with decreasing the standard depth of penetration or the depth of defect. The results also show that the phase angle is decreased with increasing the skin effect of eddy current, and that the resolution is decreased with decreasing the depth of defect.

  • There are two basic concepts in industrial radiographic examination; one is a radio-graphic sensitivity, and the other is a acceptance criteria. The comparison of these main points are studied for KS Standard and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. From the results of the experiment, higher radiographic sensitivity is required in KS Standard when the thickness of material to be examined is less than 20mm in single wall technique. The acceptance criteria for linear type indications are described on same concept in two standards, whereas the acceptance criteria for rounded indications of KS Standard which mainly depends upon the object thickness are more severe than those of ASME BPV Code.

Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation(NDE) of Cornposite Materials - A Review -

  • This essay is a general review of the application of ultrasonic NDE techniques to the performance assessment and characterization of composite materials. A brief review of ultrasonic input-output characterization of a composite plate by shear waves is presented. A theoretical development of ultrasonic wave propagation in isotropic and anisotropic media excited, respectively, by a circular transducer and an oscillatory point source is summarized. Some experimental results are described in which ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements give insight into material degradation of fatigued composite laminates. Ultrasonic determination of the elastic constants of a composite plate and an experimental attempt at ultrasonic testing of an isotropic plate containing a crack are also included. A recent effort for the characterization of viscoelastic materials using the ultrasonic NDE technique is outlined. Finally, the reliability of ultrasonic NDE is briefly touched upon.

  • Computer-aided high frequency ultrasonic is applied to aluminum oxide(85w%, 94w%, 96w%, and 99w%) MOR(modulus of rupture) samples to evaluate mechanical properties such as density variation, pore content, elastic modulus, shear modulus, and poisson's ratio. Ultrasonic wave velocity and attenuation measurement techniques were used as an evaluator of such properties. Pulse-echo C-Scan images with different fate setting method using 50MHz center frequency 1 inch focal length transducer allows evaluation of density variation and pore content. Elastic modulus calculated with the relation of density and ultrasonic velocity. It shows good reliability as compared with resonance method. Sintered density variation of $0.025g/cm^{3}$, that is 0.6% of theoretical density in $Al_{2}O_{3}$ samples can be observed by ultrasonic velocity measurement. Attenuation measurement method qualitatively agree with 4-point fracture testing result concerning of porosity content.

  • The control of resistance of foil strain gauge is accomplished by means of etching technique. Thus, there is an irregularity in metal foil. In order to solve this problem, ion sputter machining method has been used to make strain gauge in this study and the characteristics of this strain gauge are investigated. As the result of this study, it was possible to make a flexible strain gauge which can be used to measure the stress. The strain gauge made by authors shows superior characteristics in creep, O point variance, hysteresis and nonlinearity by surrounding temperature.

  • Recently, it is gradually raised necessity that thickness of thin film is measured accurately and managed in industrial circles and medical world. In this study, regarding to the thickness of film which is in opaque object and is beyond distance resolution capacity, thickness measurement was done by MEM-cepstrum analysis of received ultrasonic wave. In measurement results, film thickness which is beyond distance resolution capacity was measured accurately. And within thickness range that don't exist interference, thickness measurement by MEM-ceptrum analysis was impossible.

  • A split-spectrum processing technique for an ultrasonic flaw detection system has been developed, which improves the flaw-to-grain echo ratio in large-grained materials. The enhancement is achieved by partitioning a wide-band received spectrum to obtain frequency shifted bands, which are then processed to suppress the grain echoes with respect to the flaw echo, using a novel signal minimization algorithm. A technique for suppression of grain echoes has also been devised which takes advantage of the fact that the grain echo amplitude changes with the frequency of the incident ultrasound whereas the flaw echo amplitude does not. The combination of this technique and the new flaw detection system greatly improve the capabilities of ultrasonic evaluation of large grain materials.

  • The optimum test conditions of measuring the crack height were determined for the two-probe ultrasonic diffraction method. The applicability and the accuracy of the two-probe ultrasonic diffraction method on the inclined artificial cracks and the fatigue cracks were evaluated. It us possible to measure the height of the normal and inclined artificial cracks with the maximum error of ${\pm}\;0.5mm$ with the two-probe ultrasonic diffraction method. It was found, however, that the accuracy of this method in meaasuring the height of the fatigue crack depends on the degree of closure of the crack tip. It was desirable to choose a refraction angle as small as possible, but the angle should not be so small that the distortion of the lateral waveform became appreciable.

  • Bubble behaviors in a circular tube have been analyzed numerically and experimentally by a three-dimensional tomography method, Initially, a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART) which showed better results for previous studies of numerical simulations has been performed to confirm the accuracy of the three-dimensional reconstruction for the two-phase flow using a computer-synthesized phantom, Then, bubble behaviors have been investigated experimentally by the three-dimensional MART method using real projected data captured simultaneously by a laser and three CCD cameras for three angles of view, Also, the transient reconstructions have been attempted to analyze the real-time oxygen-bubble movements in water by the interval of 1/30 second.

  • In order to evaluate the corrosion of reinforcing steel-bars (rebar) in concrete, a nondestructive evaluation by the half-cell potential method is currently applied. In this study, potentials measured on a concrete surface are compensated into those on the concrete-rebar interface by the inverse boundary element method (IBEM). Because these potentials are obtained three-dimensionally (3-D), 3-D visualization is desirable. To this end, a visualization system has been developed by using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). As an application, results of a reinforced concrete (RC) slab with corroded rebars are visualized and discussed.
