레이저 스페클 전단간섭법을 이용한 압력용기 내부결함의 측정 가능한 결함 크기의 평가 (Evaluation of Detectable Defect Size for Inner Defect of Pressure Vessel Using Laser Speckle Shearing Interferometry)

  • 최근 압력용기가 다양한 산업분야에서 사용되고 있다. 압력용기의 내부 또는 외부에 결함이 발생하면 대형 사고를 유발하게 된다. 압력용기의 외부에 발생하는 결함은 육안검사를 통해 어느 정도 해결이 가능하지만, 압력용기 내부에 발생하는 결함은 육안검사로는 측정하기 어렵다. 이러한 형태의 결함을 측정하기 위해서는 비파괴검사가 적합하다. 전단간섭법은 광계측을 이용한 비파괴검사법 중 하나이며, 비접촉식으로 전체 측정영역에 대해 실시간으로 한 번의 실험을 통해 결함을 측정할 수 있다는 장점을 지니고 있다. 본 논문에서는 레이저 스페클 전단간섭법을 이용하여 측정할 수 있는 압력용기의 내부에 존재하는 결함 크기를 평가하였다. ASTM A53 Gr.B 재질로 제작된 압력용기 시험편 내부에 인위적인 결함을 가공하고 공압을 이용하여 압력용기에 내압을 가하여 결함을 측정하였다. 실험을 통해 0.2 MPa의 압력차에서도 압력용기의 원래 두께의 25 %의 깊이로 발생한 결함까지는 측정 가능함을 확인하였다.

  • The application and development of on-line monitoring technology of AE to surveillance of crack propagation will contribute to the structural integrity of reactor pressure vessel and piping system. This research has been performed in order to obtain the evaluation technology for source location of AE and the analysis for the AE signal of the welded specimen. AE is detected by 4-channels AE system during pressurization in small pressure vessels. The cracking of artificial defects can be accurately located and categorized in real time. The welded specimens have more events rate and higher amplitude than the weldless less specimens, and the events rate have a peak around the yield point and just before the failure under tensile test.

  • Generally, butt welds with plate thickness $30{\sim}40mm$ are welded with groove angle $40^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;70^{\circ}$, etc. In the detection of internal weld defects, oblique testing with single probe has been mainly used. But, recently, in acccordance with enlargement of welded structure, thick plate with 100-200mm are frequently required. Thus I-groove welding method was lately developed and often used. In this case, most frequently generated defects are the lack of weld penetration and incomplete fusion between base metal and welding material. If we would detect by oblique testing with single probe, detecting flaw is occassionally impossible or very underestimated. In this study, the limit for applying tandem method was studied in dise and band type flaws. The estimation of flaw size could be within 10% error compared to real flaws.

  • In recent years the acoustic emission technique has been increasingly applied for detecting flaw s and cracks in materials either under testing or in service. It is important that what is the origin of AE signals detected by AE transducers. The purpose of this paper is to detect AE source on ductile material such as pressure vessel steel, A533B. As the results of experimentation, the increase of AE events number is proportional to the increase of the volume of plain strain zone. The origin of AE signals is fracture of MnS inclusions which have small amplitude of AE waves.

  • The optimumultrasonic test conditions for the thin carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) sheet were determined for the immersed reflector plate method. The effects of the water distance, the surface conditions of the specimen and transducer characteristics were studied. For a reliable test the water distance between the transducer and the front surface of the specimen should be determined when the beam profile of the transducer appears in the bell-shape. The detectability of the defect was improved as the effective beam width of the ultrasonic transducer became narrow. The transducer should be properly chosen considering to the surface condition of the test material as well as the size and type of the defect to be detected. It was possible to detect the flat bottom hole whose diameter is as small as about 500 micrometer.

  • Acoustic Emission is not only expected as a non-destructive evaluation technique in practice but also noted as a new powerful means of evaluation of materials. AE occurs with plastic deformation and propagation of crack, and this patterns of occurence of AE vary with materials. AE which comes from propagation of crack depends oil the shapes and properties of materials. Like this AE has characteristic of material. The present work is an attempt to evaluate characteristics of carbon steel (SM55C) and Die steel(SKD11) by means of dynamic response of AE method.

  • The effect of ultrasonic search units on the detectability and size evaluation of planar flaws was studied for thicker ferritic material using the technique of the DAC curve and reference level. Cylindrical holes were used as calibration reflectors. The planar flaws such as disc and band types were machined. They were detected and evaluated with different search units and sizing criteria. The value evaluated was compared with the actual dimension of planar flaws.

  • In this experimental research, fracture mechanisms of spheroidal graphite cast iron (As Cast, annealed and normalized) were investigated by using Acoustic Emission (AE) technique. In this study, the data (AE signal) are digitized and processed with the 8 bits micro-computer (APPLE II) connected to the AE measuring device without data processing unit. The source of AE signal was estimated by fractography analysis. The results obtained in this experimental study are summarized as follows : For the heterogeneous materials (spheroidal graphite cast iron) with inclusions which may considered as cracks, it is found that low and high AE amplitude appear simultaneously and the load is found to be fluctuated in the final stage of deformation. But the lad is not fluctuated in tension test with low AE amplitude only. AE is measured within elastic region and it is confirmed that 0.2% offset yield load agrees approximately with the load point where AE counts decrease steeply after the point of maximum AE counts.

  • Eddy Current Examination is expected as the effective technique for nondestructive inspection of steam generator and various kinds of heat exchanging tubes made of STS - 304. In Case of E. C. T, a study on the various factors which have an effect on coil impedance is very important to the sensitivity of defect detection and the ratio of signal to noise. Therefore, this study analyzed coil impedance by means of the variational principle, the minimized theory of energy functional and the application of Finite Element Method. Really by using E. C. T, the relationship between the size of defects and the intensity of Eddy Current Signals can be obtained. Signal intensity becomes maximum at certain frequency. This frequency is affected by the characteristics and the position of signal sources.

  • Bolting degradation problems in primary coolant pressure boundary applications have become a major concern in the nuclear industry. In the bolts concerned, the failure mechanism was either corrosion wastage(loss of bolt diameter) or stress-corrosion cracking.(3) Here the manual ultrasonic testing of RPV(Reactor Pressure Vessel) and RCP(Reactor Coolant Pump) stud has been performed. But it is difficult to detect indications because examiner can not exactly control the rotation angle and can not distinguish the indication from signals of bolt. In many cases, the critical sizes of damage depth are very small(1-2 mm order). At critical size, the crack tends to propagatecompletly through the bolt under stress, Resulting in total fracture.(3) Automatic stud scanner for studs(bolts) was developed because the precise measurement of bolt diameter is required in this circumstance. By use of this scanner, the rotation angle of probe was exactly controlled and the exposure time of radiations was reduced.
