  • In the case of a school building, even though it is a regular structure in terms of plan shape, if the masonry infill wall acts as a lateral load resisting element, it can be determined as a torsionally irregular building. As a result, the strength and ductility of the structure are reduced, which may cause additional earthquake damage to the structure. Therefore, in this study, a structure similar to a school building with torsional irregularity was selected as an example structure and the damping performance of the PC-BRB was analyzed by adjusting the eccentricity according to the amount of masonry infilled wall. As a result of nonlinear dynamic analysis after seismic reinforcement, the torsional irregularity of each floor was reduced compared to before reinforcement, and the beams and column members of the collapse level satisfied the performance level due to the reduction of shear force and the reinforcement of stiffness. The energy dissipation of PC-BRB was similar in the REC-10 ~ REC-20 analytical models with an eccentricity of 20% or less. REC-25 with an eccentricity of 25% was the largest, and it is judged that it is effective to combine and apply PC-BRB when it has an eccentricity of 25% or more to control the torsional behavior.

  • A method of dynamic analysis is developed for torsional free vibrations of elliptical-box girder type or stiffening truss system suspension bridge. In this study, the method based on a finite element technique using a digital computer, is illustrated by two numerical examples, the Namhae Bridge which is located in Kyungsang nam-do opened on June, 1973, and the Mt. Chunma Bridge is simple span pedestrian's suspension bridge with lateral bracing system in Mt. Chunma, Kyungki-do, are used. In general, dynamic modes of complex suspension bridges are three-dimensional in form, i.e., coupling between vertical and torsional motions. However, introduced that amplitudes of oscillation are infinitesimal for coincidence with the purpose of it's use, thereupon, the torsional vibration analyses are treated without coupling terms. A sufficient number of natural frequencies and mode shapes for torsional free vibration are presented in this paper. In the case of Mt. Chunma Bridge, the natural frequencies and periods are computed with and without reinforcement, respectively, and compared their discrepancies. The influence of the auxiliary reinforcing cables is prevailing in the first few modes, namely, 1st and 2nd in symmetric and 1st, 2nd and 3rd in antisymmetric vibration, and conspicuous in the symmetric compared with the antisymmetric motion, but in the higher modes, this kind of simple accessory elucidates rether converse effects. In the Namhae Bridge, the results are compared with the Manual's obtained by wind tunnel test. It reveals commendable agreement.

  • In the case of horizontally curved bridges, the use of curved composite box girder bridges are increased due to its functionality and for aesthetical reason. As it compared with the open section, the steel box girder bridges have advantages to resistant of distortion and corrosion. In practice the grid analysis is conducted by utilizing only the cross beam. Since the stiffness of the concrete slab is not included in the grid analysis, the cross beam is induced the distribution of the live load. In this study the affects of the radius of curvature, the number of diaphragm and cross beam to the load distribution of the curved steel box girder bridge was investigated by applying the finite element method. The results indicate that the curvature of curved bridge had a large affect of the load distribution and as the curvature was increased the load distribution factor was increased. A single diaphragm at the center of girder is important role for the load distribution effects and structural stability, but additional diaphragm did not affect it as much. The affects of the cross beam to the load distribution were investigated and its influence was minor. It can be safely concluded that the addition of cross beam does not aid the purpose of the live load distribution. And the stiffness of concrete slab for the load distribution effects should be concerned in the design of curved steel box girder bridges.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the geometry of carotid artery by assessing the images of contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CE-MRA) and interrelationships between the geometry of carotid artery and clinical factors. Materials and Methods : 216 consecutive patients who performed supraaortic CE-MRA with fast spoiled gradient-echo imaging were included. Their medical records were reviewed for variable information including risk factors predictive of generalized atherosclerotic disease (age, hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidema, and smoking), sex, body weight, height, and body mass index (BMI). We reviewed the CE-MRA with carotid origin (3 types), carotid artery tortuosity, angle of internal carotid artery bifurcation, the type of aortic arch branching, and the presence of the coiling of carotid artery. Results : Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that significantly contributed clinical backgrounds for carotid origin were the age and the BMI. With an increase of age at 1, the probability that the type of carotid origin become from type 1 to type 2 was 0.9 times (p=0.004) in right carotid artery (RCA), 0.9 times (p = 0.031) in left carotid artery (LCA), 0.9 times that are likely to be type3 from type 2 (p<0.001) in RCA and 0.9 times in LCA (p=0.009). Increase in BMI at 1 increased odds of becoming type 2 as 1.1 times (p = 0.067) in RCA, 1.1 times (p=0.009) in LCA and increased chance of becoming type 3 as 1.2 times (p = 0.001) in RCA, 1.2 times (p=0.003) in LCA. Mean value of right and left carotid tortuosity were $240.9{\pm}69.0^{\circ}$and $154.4{\pm}55.0^{\circ}$, respectively. Conclusion : The BMI, age, sex and presence of HTN affects the geometry of carotid arteries, the site of origin and tortuosity of carotid artery specifically.

  • Post-tensioned Precast concrete System(PPS) consists of U-shaped precast wide beams and concrete column. The continuity of beam-column joint is provided with floor concrete cast on the PC shell beam and post-tensioning. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the response of PPS interior beam-column joint subjected to cyclic lateral loading. To this end, an experimental investigation was performed with three half-scale specimens of interior connection. The design parameters are the amount of beam reinforcement placed inside the joint core. The test results showed that cracks were distributed well without my significant degradation of strength and ductility. Also, it was found that the prestressing may affect to alter the torsional crack angle. And the specimens sufficiently resist up to limiting drift ratio of 0.035 in accordance with the provisional by ACl of acceptance criteria for concrete special moment frames.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue on the shear bond strength(SBS) of stainless steel mesh brackets bonded to human premolar teeth with 3 no-mix adhesives. The stainless steel mesh bracket was Ormesh(Ormco, .022 slot) and three types of no-mix adhesives were Ortho-one(Bisco), $Monolok^2$(RMO), $System\;1^+$(Ormco). The $10^6$ loadcycles of $17.4{\times}10^2sin2{\pi}ftlg{\cdot}cm$ and the 1,000 thermocycles of 15 second dwell time in each bath of $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ were acturated as mechanical and thermal fatigue stress, and SBS were measured after each fatigue test. The fracture sites were analyzed by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Before thermocycles, $Monolok^2$ showed the highest Knoop hardness number(KHN, $64.03kg/mm^2$) and $System\;1^+$ showed the lowest value($31.60kg/mm^2$). After thermocycling, $Monolok^2$ also showed the highest KHN($38.03kg/mm^2$) and $system\;1^+$ showed the minimum($20.87kg/mm^2$). The KHN of Ortho-one, $Monolok^2,\;System\;1^+$ significantly decreased after thermocycling (P<0.01). 2. In static shear bond test, three adhesives had no significant differences in the SBS(P>0.01). 3. After thermocycling test, $Monolok^2$ showed the maximum SBS($19.34{\pm}2.75MPa$) and Ortho-one showed the minimum SBS($13.66{\pm}2.23MPa$). The SBS of Ortho-one(P<0.01) and $System\;1^+$(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^3$ thermocycles. 4. The SBS of three adhesives after $10^6$ loadcycles were similar and were not significantly decreased compared with static group(P>0.01). 5. The failure sites were usually bracket/resin interface in all groups irrespective of experimental conditions.

  • In this paper, large-deformation elasto-plastic analysis of space frames that considersjoint connection properties is presented. This method is based on the large-deformation formula with finite rotation, which was developed initially for elastic systems, and is extended herein to include the elasto-plastic effect and the member joint connection properties of semi-rigid what?. The analytical method was derived from the Eulerian concept, which takes into consideration the effects of large joint translations and rotations. The localmember force-deformation relationships were obtained from the beam-column approach, and the change caused by the axial strain in the member chord lengths and flexural bowing were taken into account. The effect of the axial force of the member on bending and torsional stiffness, and on the plastic moment capacity, is included in the analysis. The material is assumed to be ideally elasto-plastic, and yielding is considered concentrated at the member ends in the form of plastic hinges. The semi-rigid properties of the member joint connection are considered based on the power or linear model. The arc length method is usedto trace the post-buckling range of the elastic and elasto-plastic problems with the semi-rigid connection. A sample non-linear buckling analysis was carried out with the proposed space frame formulations to demonstrate the potential of the developed method in terms of its accuracy and efficiency.

  • The ultra-long stroke engine was developed to generate greater power at lower speeds than previous designs to enhance the propulsion efficiency. The torsional exciting force, on the other hand, was increased significantly. Therefore, it is possible to control the torsional vibration of its shaft system equipped with the fuel efficient ultra-long stroke engine by adopting a damper although the torsional vibration could be controlled adequately by applying tuning and turning wheels on the engine previously. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a viscous-spring damper used to control the torsional vibration of the corresponding shaft system are reviewed and then examined to determine what vibration characteristics might be used to optimize the viscous-spring damper. In some cases, operators of eco-ships have recently experienced the problem of delayed RPM acceleration. It has been suggested that the proper measures for controlling the torsional vibration in the shaft system should involve adjusting the design parameters of its damper determined by the optimum damper design theory to avoid the fatigue damage of shafts.

  • High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cement Composites (HPFRCC) has outstanding durability, and has attracted interest because of its ductility and development of strength, which allows a reduction of the self-weight of a structural member by substantially decreasing the cross section. Therefore, the present study aimed to improve the economic efficiency of HPFRCC by examining experimentally the flexural performance considering various characteristics of the steel fiber. To find an efficient fiber reinforcement method, the flexural performance was evaluated for different shapes, aspect ratios, and volume ratios of the steel fiber. Straight, hooked, and twisted fiber configurations were considered by adopting a fiber length longer than the usual 13 mm. The test results showed that HPFRCC reinforced by 19.5 nun-long straight fibers with a volume fraction of 1.5% shows better flexural performance than that reinforced by 13 mm-long straight fibers with a volume fraction of 2.0%. Consequently, HPFRCC with enhanced economic efficiency can be produced by adopting a reduced amount of steel fiber.

  • A 3-dimensional model of curved steel box girder bridges without diaphragm was presented. This model yielded results that were consistent with those of the parameter analysis using the BEF and Ritz methods. Se veralmodels with diaphragms were analyzed to estimate the appropriate diaphragm spacing. In case of 50m span, models A-10, A-20, A-30, B-10, B-20, and B-30 were found to have 5(8.3m), 7(6.25m), 8(5.5m), 4(10m), 6(7.1m), and 7(6.25m) diaphragms, respectively. In addition, a formula that presents the ratio of distortional stress to bending stresswas created from the results of the 3-dimensional FEM model analysis.
