  • The composite lattice structures have advantages of high specific stiffness and strength and are mainly applied to the structures of launch vehicles that carry the compressive load. However, since these structures are manufactured by filament winding technology, there are some defects and voids found in the knots. For these reasons, the stiffness and strength of the lattice structures have to be compared with finite element model for predicting design load. But, the full scale test is difficult because time and space are limited and the shape of structure is complex, and hence the simple and reliable test methods for examination of stiffness are needed. In this paper, subelements of composite lattice structures were prepared and compressive and bending test were conducted for examination of stiffness of helical and hoop rib. Test methods for subelements of composite lattice structures that has curved and twisted shape were supposed and compared with finite element analysis results.

  • It is very important to analyze the torsional vibration for the propulsion shafting of ship. The authors have developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) as a vibration analysis algorithm. The concept of the TSCM is based on the successive transfer of stiffness coefficient. The effectiveness of the TSCM was verified through many applications. In this paper, the TSCM is applied to the torsional free vibration analysis for the propulsion shafting of an actual shin with a diesel engine. In order to calculate the additional torsional stresses of the propulsion shafting the torsional forced vibration for the shafting is analyzed by using both the modal analysis method and the results of the torsional free vibration analysis by the TSCM. The accuracy of the present method is confirmed by comparing with the vibration analysis results of engine maker.

  • In the present work, a linear static analysis is presented for thin-walled prismatic box-beams made of generally anisotropic materials. A mixed beam theory has been used to model and carry out the analysis. Several different constitutive assumptions for the shell-wall of the beam section are assessed into the beam formulation. Simple layup cases of box-beams representing bending-torsion or extension-torsion coupled configuration have been considered and tested to clearly show the effects of elastic couplings of the beam. A detailed finite element structural analysis using the MSC/NASTRAN has been carried out to validate the current analytical results. Numerical results show that appropriate assumptions for the constitutive relations are important and crucial for the accurate prediction of beam stiffness constants and also thor the beam behavior.

  • This paper evaluates dynamic performance of a cab over type large-sized truck for estimating the effects of frame's torsional characteristics using a computer model. The computer model considers two mounting methods of frame, flange mounting and web mounting. Frame is modeled by finite elements using MSC/NASTRAN In order to consider the flexibility of frame. The torsional test of the frame is conducted In order to validate the modeled finite element model. A load cell is used to measure the load applied to the frame. An angle sensor is used to measure the torsional angle. An actuator is used to apply a load to the frame. To estimate the effects of frame's torsional characteristics on dynamic performance, simulations are performed with the flange mounting and web mounting frame. Simulation results show that the web mounting frame's variations of roll angle, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate are larger than the flange mounting frame's variations, especially in the high velocity and the second part of the double lane course.

  • After studying the composition about the torsional shafting of main engine for fishing vessel with Power Take Off (PTO) System, the authors made a computer program using the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM) for analyzing torsional vibration about the shafting with PTO system and nonlinear elastic coupling. The torsional shafting of main engine was separated by 3 types according to the connecting. The torsional shafting of main engine was separated by 3 types according to the connecting condition of main engine with propeller or the PTO system or both of them. In this paper, the change of natural frequencies and natural modes according to connecting condition of torsional shafting and nonlinear elastic coupling were analyzed. The accuracy of the TSCM was confirmed by comparing with the computational results of the Finite Element Method.

  • It is reported that an intermittently rotating chamber system will improve the ratio of firepower to armament space in the case of mid-calibre automatic guns. However, the parallel index, which is a main component of the system, tends to be torsionally flexible due to the low lateral stiffness of cam followers on the index turret. This may cause the shaft system connecting the turret with the chamber prone to considerable residual torsional vibration so that serious misalignment problems occur during ammunition loading and firing processes. Herein, an electrorhelogical (ER) fluid actuator that can suppress such vibrations and the associated semiactive control algorithm are proposed. By mathematical modeling and computer simulations, the performance of the entire system is proved satisfactory.

  • To establish the rational design method, it is very important that predict accurately load-deformation response on reinforced concrete members. Torque-twist curves of reinforced concrete members in pure torsion were proposed recently by Collins and Hsu, etc. But, it is found that torsional strength of reinforced concrete members based on Hsu's theory is underestimated in the over-all load region except the ultimate state. In this paper, an attempt is made to present the higher-precision of torsional strength on arbitrary loading condition. For this purpose, constitutive equations are derived from which an estimate can be made of the torsional behavior of reinforced concrete members under the pure torsion. Tension stiffness of concrete in both the cracked and uncracked state have been considered. A softening effect that reduces the strength of the concrete by the diagonal cracking of concrete have been appropriately deliberated. Particularly, the experiments was done with 14 test beams to investigate the validity of theoretical analysis.

  • The recently developed marine engines for propulsion of ships have higher torsional exciting force than previous engines to improve the propulsion efficiency and to reduce specific fuel oil consumption. As a result, a viscous damper or viscous-spring damper is installed in front of marine engine to control the torsional vibration. In the case of viscous damper, it is supposed that there is no elastic connection in the silicon oil, which is filled between the damper housing and inertia ring. However, In reality, the silicon oil with high viscosity possesses torsional stiffness and has non-linear dynamic characteristics according to the operating temperature and frequency of the viscous damper. In this study, the damping characteristics of a viscous damper used to control the torsional vibration of the shafting system have been reviewed and the characteristics of torsional vibration of the shafting system equipped with a corresponding viscous damper have been examined. In addition, it is examined how to interpret the theoretically optimal dynamic characteristics of a viscous damper for this purpose, and the optimum design for the propulsion shafting system has been suggested considering the operating temperature and aging. when the torsional vibration of the shafting system is controlled by a viscous damper filled with highly viscous silicon oil.

  • The objective of this research is to examine how the lateral resisting system of selected prototypes are affected by seismic zone effect and shape irregularity on its seismic performance. The lateral resisting systems are divided into the three types, diagrid, braced tube, and outrigger system. The prototype models were assumed to be located in LA, a high-seismicity region, and in Boston, a low-seismicity region. The shape irregularity was classified with rotated angle of plane, $0^{\circ}$, $1^{\circ}$, $2^{\circ}$. This study performed two parts of analyses, Linear Response and Non-Linear Response History(NLRH) analysis. The Linear Response analysis was used to check the displacement at the top and natural period of models. NLRH analysis was conducted to invest base shear and story drift ratio of buildings. As results, the displacement of roof and natural period of three structural systems increase as the building stiffness reduces due to the changes in rotation angle of the plane. Also, the base shear is diminished by the same reason. The result of NLRH, the story drift ratio, that was subject to Maximum Considered Earthquake(MCE) satisfied 0.045, a recommended limit according to Tall Building Initiative(TBI).
