  • The irregular shaped buildings have depended on the digital technology for their design and construction. The digital technology also has been developed for years at fast pace. This paper examined the cases of the irregular shaped buildings from 1990, when the result of the architectural works were begun to emerge to the world, up to the present and characteristics of the digital technology of those periods.

  • Starting from Guggenheim Bilbao Museum in 1997, it has been increased steadily that complex geometry buildings using digital designs and construction process. Since 2010, the domestic Freeform design has been widely used for buildings such as Dongdaemoon Design Plaza, Seoul City Hall, Tri-Bowl, and etc. But there are many defects such as the increased cost and period of construction, and the declined quality of construction because of the lack of optimized method and engineering experiences. Therefore, this study has an effort to review case study of the recent freeform buildings and construction methods using digital fabrications. And this study proposed the improve method for the construction quality for freeform buildings.

  • In manufacturing industry, image scanning technique has made enormous progress in past decades. 3D models have been also very important to continuously monitor the related spatial information for freeform buildings. The process of shape making of 3D scanning is as follows: mesh surface segmentation, NURBS surface generation, and parametric solid model generation. We will review the process and applying process. Especially in the construction industry, 3D data collection by laser scanning has become an high quality 3D models. Therefore, in this research, we have an effort to review construction of reverse design process for freeform envelope using 3D scanning. The technology enables many 3D shape engineering and design parameterization of reverse engineering in the construction site.

  • Through the case study, we surveyed an applicability of digital fabrication in irregular-shaped building construction project. By digital fabrication, we mean is a precision manufacturing method has been used in aircraft, ship and car manufacturing industry. We collected construction-completed "LotteWorld Tower Podium" project data and analyzed its process in terms of construction quality andduration. The result shows that digital fabrication is considered a competitive technology that enabled to complete the project in seven months within 3mm surface curvature threshold. The digitalfabrication is expected to apply on a number of irregular-shaped building construction project.

  • Production of freeform concrete segments use various molds because of the unique shape of it unlike common concrete segments. As a result, the mold for freeform concrete segments cannot be reused. Therefor, cost overrun is occurred by needs of more time and manpower to produce the freeform concrete segments compared with common concrete segments. To prevent the cost overrun, a new production method for the freeform concrete segments is needed to develop and the requirements for it should be analyzed before. Therefor, the aim of this study is requirements analysis for production of freeform concrete segment. The requirements of production of freeform concrete segments and form for it is analyzed in this study. The result of this study would be used to suggest the new production method of freeform concrete segments.

  • Currently, the market for free-form building continues to grow, but the technology for construction of free-form building in Korea is still in need of much study. In this study, we focused on this problem and conducted basic study for development a side formwork control system to product various types of FCP. As a result of this study, it is expected that it will be able to secure competitiveness for the free-form building market, which is expected to contribute greatly to the growth of the construction industry.

  • While non-uniform shapes are appearing as an apparent building style recently, most architects predominantly think structure and construction technology should support the designed shape of non-uniform structures determined by the architect. Within such a governance structure of architect's perception, the role of an engineer is emphasized for technical support only. Especially, in making a decision on a structural design and plan, if various and objective reviews are not conducted, the design is very likely to be left only as a drawing even if the design is appropriate for criteria and norms. With the recognition of such problems, the present study attempted to propose an equal cooperative relationship between architects and engineers in designing non-uniform structures in the future.
