  • This paper presents a novel hybrid time-frequency-domain method for nonlinear soil-structure interaction(SSI) analysis. It employs, in a practical manner, a computer code for equivalent linear SSI analysis and a general-purpose nonlinear finite element program. The proposed method first (calculates dynamic responses on a truncated finite element boundary utilizing an equivalent linear SSI program in the frequency domain. Then, a general purpose nonlinear finite element program is employed to analyze the nonlinear SSI problem in the time domain, in which boundary conditions at the truncated boundary are imposed with the responses calculated in the previous frequency domain SSI analysis, In order to validate the proposed method, seismic response analyses are carried out for a 2-D underground subway station in a multi-layered half-space, For the analyses, a equivalent linear SSI code KIESSI-2D is coupled to ANSYS program. The numerical results indicate that the proposed methodology can be a viable solution for nonlinear SSI problems.

  • The characteristics of nonlinear seismic behavior and failure mechanism of RC space frame in railroad viaducts have been studied by the numerical analysis in time domain. The structure concerned is modeled in 3 dimensional extent and the RC frame elements consisting of fibers are employed for the columns. The fibers are characterized as RC zone and PC one to distinguish the different energy release after cracking resulted from the bond characteristic between concrete and re-bar. Due to the deviation of the mass center and the stiffness center of the entire structure the complex behavior is shown under seismic actions. The excessive shear force is concentrated on the column beside flexible one relatively, which leads to the failure of bridge concerned.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear parameter estimation method using the estimated hysteresis of each structural members was studied for the purpose of efficient seismic damage prediction and estimation of MDOF nonlinear structural model in the shaking table test. The hysteresis of each structural members can be obtained by the conversion of measured response histories into relative motions of each structural members and member forces. These hysteresis can be used to evaluate various kinds of damage indices of each structural members. The MDOF nonlinear structural model for further analysis(re-analysis) can be easily reconstructed using estimated nonlinear structural parameters of each structural members. To demonstrate the proposed techniques, several numerical and experimental example analyses are carried out. The results indicate that the proposed method can be very useful to assess local seismic damages of structures.

  • A regularization method based on the Duvaut-Lions viscoplastic scheme for plastic-damage and continuum damage models, which provides mesh-independent and well-posed solutions in nonlinear earthquake analysis of concrete dams, is presented. A plastic-damage model regularized using the proposed rate-dependent viscosity method and its original rate-independent version are used for the earthquake damage analysis of a concrete dam to analyze the effect of the regualarization and mesh. The computational analysis shows that the regularized plastic-damage model gives well-posed solutions regardless mesh size and arrangement, while the rate-independent counterpart produces mesh-dependent ill-posed results.

  • The effect of several simplified methods of seismic analysis is estimated. The pounding/contacting of superstructures were considered in the multispan simply supported bridge and the multispan continuous bridge. Although nonlinear time history analysis is generally used for seismic analysis of bridges, many codes including AASHTO propose several simplified analysis methods. AASHTO, however, does not mention pounding. Therefore, the simplified methods may produce results that are different from those of nonlinear time history analysis. This study developed nonlinear analytical models of the two types of bridges mentioned. The models were then modified to the simplified linear models for simplified analysis. The results of the simplified methods were compared with those of nonlinear time history analysis. It was found that including of the pounding/contacting element in the simplified methods generated responses similar to those of the nonlinear time history analysis.

  • Site soil condition affects significantly on the seismic response of a structure and is a critical factor for the performance based seismic design of a structure. In this paper, the effects of nonlinear soil properties on the elastic response spectra of a structure including the nonlinearity of a soil due to the earthquake excitation is investigated using one step finite element approach for the entire soil structure system and approximate linear iterative procedure to simulate the nonlinear soil behavior with the Ramberg-Osgood soil model. Studies were carried out for a linear SDOF system of a variable period with and without a pile group for the 1940 CI Centro earthquake recorded on ground rather than rock. The study results showed clearly that the effect of the nonlinear behavior of soft soil is very important on the elastic seismic response of a structure suggesting the necessity of the performance based seismic design.

  • This paper presents the result of an international cooperative research on the post-correlation analysis of forced vibration tests and the prediction of earthquake responses of a large-scale seismic test structure. The dynamic analysis is carried out using the axisymmetric finite element method incorporating in finite elements for the for field soil region. Through the post-correlation analysis, the properties of the soil layers are revised so that the best correlation in the responses may be obtained compared with the measured force vibration test data. Utilizing the revised soil properties as the initial linear values, the seismic responses are predicted for an earthquake using the equivalent linearlization technique. It has been found that the predicted responses by the equivalent nonlinear procedure are in excellent agreement with the observed responses, while those using the linear properties are fairly off from the measured results.

  • Seismic performance evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. Incremental Dynamic Analysis(IDA) is a analysis method that has recently emerged to estimate structural performance under earthquakes. This method can obtained the entire range of structural performance from the linear elastic stage to yielding and finally collapse by subjecting the structure to increasing levels of ground acceleration. Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. The nonlinear response history analysis(NRHA) among various nonlinear analysis methods is the most accurate to compute seismic performance of structures, but it is time-consuming and necessitate more efforts. The nonlinear approximate methods, which is more practical and reliable tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures, are extensively studied. The uncoupled modal response history analysis(UMRHA) is a method which can find the nonlinear reponse of the structures for ESDF from the pushover curve using NRHA or response spectrum. The direct spectrum analysis(DSA) is approximate nonlinear method to evaluate nonlinear response of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural linear vibration period and yield strength from the pushover analysis. In this study, the practicality and the reliability of seismic performance of approximate nonlinear methods for incremental dynamic analysis of mixed building structures are to be compared.

  • In this paper, a method on deducing the capacity spectrum based on nonlinear earthquake response analysis will be introduced. Damage assessment of general building draws the capacity spectrum through the Push-over analysis and the intersection point of capacity spectrum and demand spectrum is seen as performance point. Push-over analysis is the way to perform static analysis by using the equivalent static load changed from the effect of earthquake and predict the behavior of structures by earthquake. But, this method can not be taken into account in the effects of higher mode and the dynamic characteristic. Therefore, in order to calculate the capacity spectrum under dynamic properties of building. A capacity spectrum from going ahead with the nonlinear earthquake response analysis is suggested.

  • In the previous $paper^{(1),(2)}$, a geometrically non-linear finite element formulation of spatial cables subjected to self-weights and support motions was presented using multiple noded cable elements and how to determine the initial equililbrium state of cables was addressed. In this paper, in order to perform dynamic non-linear analysis of ocean cables subjected to support motions and earthquakes, a numerical method to calculate Morison forces and incorporate effects of earthquake motions is presented based on the Newmark method. Challenging example problems are presented in order to investigate dynamic non-linear behaviors of ocean cables subjected to support motions and earthquake loadings.
