The actual hysteretic behavior of structural elements and systems is closer to smooth hysteretic behavior than piece-wise linear behavior. This paper presents a methodology for computing the constant-ductility inelastic response spectra for smooth hysteretic behaviors. The effect of the hysteretic smoothness on the inelastic response spectra for acceleration, displacement, and input energy is evaluated. The results indicate that increasing smoothness in the hysteretic behavior decreases the inelastic response spectra.

In this paper, material non-linear behavior of PZT wafer(3203HD, CTS) under high electric field and stress is experimentally investigated and the non-linearity of the PZT wafer is numerically simulated. Empirical functions that can represent the non-linear behavior of the PZT wafer have been extracted based on the measured piezo-strain under stress. The functions are implemented in an incremental finite element formulation for material non-linear analysis. New definition of the piezoelectric constant and the incremental strain are incorporated into the finite element formulation for a better reproduction of the non-linear behavior. With the new definition of the in incremental piero-strain the measured non-linear behavior of the PZT wafer has been accurately reproduced even for high electric field. For validation of the measured non-linear characteristics and the proposed approach, a PZT bimorph beam actuator has been numerically and experimentally tested. The predicted actuation displacement, based on the material nonlinear finite element analysis, showed a good agreement with the measured one.

Site soil condition affects significantly on the seismic response of a structure and is a critical factor for the performance based seismic design of a structure. In this paper, the effects of nonlinear soil properties on the elastic response spectra of a structure including the nonlinearity of a soil due to the earthquake excitation is investigated using one step finite element approach for the entire soil structure system and approximate linear iterative procedure to simulate the nonlinear soil behavior with the Ramberg-Osgood soil model. Studies were carried out for a linear SDOF system of a variable period with and without a pile group for the 1940 CI Centro earthquake recorded on ground rather than rock. The study results showed clearly that the effect of the nonlinear behavior of soft soil is very important on the elastic seismic response of a structure suggesting the necessity of the performance based seismic design.
Since composite materials have anisotropic properties that depend on their stacking angle and sequence, the analysis of joints with isotropic adherends is limited in describing the behavior of the adhesive Joint with composite adherends. In this study, the nonlinear solution for adhesive joints with composite adherends was derived by incorporating the nonlinear behavior of the adhesive into the analysis. The behavior of the laminated composite tube was first analyzed, and the stress distributions of the composite tubular adhesive joint were calculated by including the nonlinear properties of the adhesive. The effect of the stacking sequence of composite adherends and bonding length on torque capacities of joints was examined, and results of the nonlinear analysis were also compared with those of the linear analysis.

Many constitutive models for concrete have been developed to predict the nonlinear behavior of concrete members considerably. The constitutive model for reinforcing bar that include the tension stiffening effect due to the bond characteristics between steel bars and concrete is being studied but the bilinear model is generally used. It was found that the buckling of the longitudinal reinforcing bars is controlled the nonlinear behavior of hybrid precast concrete panel, which is being developed for core wall. In this study, the constitutive models that can consider the embedding and buckling effects of reinforcing bar are investigated and a new model combing these constitutive models is proposed. In order to verify the proposed model, the analysis results are compared with experimental results of the concrete wall and hybrid precast concrete panel. The analysis of embedding-effect-only modeling predicted that the deformation increases continually without the decrease in the load carrying capacity. However, the analysis results of proposed model showed good agreement with some experimental results, thus verifying the proposed computational model.

Two types of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures having irregularity in the lower two stories were selected as prototypes, and nonlinear time history analysis was performed using OpenSees to verify the analysis technique and to investigate the seismic capacity of those buildings. One of the buildings studied had a symmetrical moment-resisting frame (BF), while the other had an infilled shear wall in only one of the exterior frames (ESW). A fiber model, consisting of concrete and reinforcing bar represented from the stress-strain relationship, was adapted and used to simulate the nonlinearity of members, and MVLEM (Multi Vertical Linear Element Model) was used to simulate the behavior of the wall. The analytical results simulate the behavior of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures well, including the stiffness and yield force of piloti stories, the rocking behavior of the upper structure and the variation of the axial stiffness of the column due to variation in loading condition. However, MVLEM has a limitation in simulating the abrupt increasing lateral stiffness of a wall, due to the torsional mode behavior of the building. The design force obtained from a nonlinear time history analysis was shown to be about $20{\sim}30%$ smaller than that obtained in the experiment. For this reason, further research is required to match the analytical results with real structures, in order to use nonlinear time history analysis in designing a piloti-type high-rise RC building.
This study investigates a geometrical nonlinear dynamic behaviors of laminated skew plates made of advanced composite materials (ACM). Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT), the Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iteration are used for the nonlinear dynamic solution. The effects of cutout sizes, skew angles and lay up sequences on the nonlinear dynamic response for various parameters are studied using a nonlinear dynamic finite element program developed for this study. The several numerical results were in good agreement with those reported by other investigators for square composite plates with or without central cutouts, and the new results reported in this paper show the significant interactions between the cutout, skew angles and layup sequence in the laminate. Key observation points are discussed and a brief design guideline of skew laminates is given.

Love which is one of the emotional of mankind, has been studied in sociology and psychology as a matter of great concern. Through such a research, the researchers have provided the basic mathematical model for love model, we cannot find nonlinear characteristics through the basic love model. Therefore, in this paper, in order to find nonlinear behaviors in the basic love model, we apply external force to the basic love model. Then we confirm the existence of nonlinear behaviors through time series and phase portrait. We also confirm that this nonlinear behaviors have the periodic doubling, chaotic phenomena and periodic process which are very similar to typical chaotic occurrence phenomena.

A method of analysis for the material and geometric nonlinear analysis of planar prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridges including the time-dependent effects due to load history, creep, shrinkage, aging of concrete and relaxation of prestress is described. The analysis procedure, based on the finite element method, is capable of predicting the response of these structures through elastic, cracking, inelastic and ultimate ranges. The nonlinear formulation for the description of motion is based on the updated Lagrangian approach. To account for the material nonlinearity, nonlinear stress-strain relationship and cracking of concrete, nonlinear stress-strain relationships of reinforcing steel, prestressing steel, and cable, including load reversal are given. Results from a numerical examples on ultimate analyses of cable-stayed bridges are presented to illustrate the analysis method.
